Truly a comedy of errors. Many people wish for their own Cinderella story. But it's just not a thing that happens irl. Excellent video explanation. Thank you.

It just... it leaves me baffled. Utterly, and completely.

Jesus Christ. What a cringe explanation those people had. Well, glad it wasn't my money. But all that aside, you do make a valuable point, not just from a tabletop/game developer perspective, but just work ethic in general. I come across so many people around me in the work force, they want everything handed to them on a silver platter, or believe they are just going to get lucky and either get the promotion after spending 2 months on the job, or instantly land that 6 figure salary off the bat (even with degrees etc.). In my experience, I don't care what your background is, the way to succeed is going from the Bottom - UP. Do your job, do it well, war of attrition, and build your own foundation. That's what happened to me, except I didn't ask for my promotions, I was drafted or "volunteered" because I knew what the hell I was doing. Sure it's more money, but added responsibility/work load/mental exhaustion always sucks. But hey, the world keeps on turning.

Truth. It really is amazing how deeply convinced main character syndrome can run with some folks. Unfortunately, in reality, the plucky first timers rarely upset the industry and claim the top spot.

Lots of folks don't realize it is a business. You, or someone you are working with, needs to do all the other parts beyond the creative part. Mainly the marketing part. You have to get your product in front of the audience you are going after.

And if you're going to a con, regardless of the size of that con, you need to have someone there who knows how to work the crowd, and how to pitch your product.

Why is it always Gen Con...? How do you fail to bring anything to draw people in? Advertising 101. I kind of get it; we all think our ideas are amazing and it's going to be the Best Thing Ever™️, but the likelihood of being so successful everyone overlooks the flaws of The Thing and your own inexperience is so, so slim. We all want to be successful (whatever that may look like) but...this was an epic overlooking of so many things. Oof... I don't mean to be mean but...my spine hurts from that level of cringe (in regards to what they thought would happen). Oh dear... If art was a selling point, starving artists wouldn't exist. And good on this person for setting down their partner to talk about this and do the work to help them as much as they could.
