In todays video we are going to look at using Macros and Remote Control in Bitwig 4 to set up 'minimums' and 'maximums' for a selection of parameters we would like to automate over the course of our track. This allows us to then move forward quickly with arrangements because we have already decided upon the ways in which each sound can and will change over time.

@7:08 I was dying. This moment right here, is exactly what it's like playing around with these tools and things. I have accidentally clicked, or tweaked something and had the exact same reaction - "WHOOAH hold everything...That. Is. Awesome. Now what did I even do that made this happen...?"

Your videos are great, and this one is really useful. The only problem I have is that you (and Polarity) are so proficient in Bitwig that your 34 minute video is going to turn into a three or four hour adventure as I work through all your quick changes.

I've searched high and low there doesn't seem to be any quick ways to learn these types of complex software other than by diving in and getting experience with seat time

This is gold, thank you. I have been using the min/max technique for some time but never preparing all before hand to have it nice and tidy for arrangement and manipulating the energy of song from there. What I am struggling with is the min/max with number of elements. I always think I need to add more sounds, more effects, more layers, more changes to not sound boring even I know it's not the case. Not sure if you already made a similar video but it would be nice to know more about the minimalist mindset. Something like Exupery's quote “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

So glad you enjoyed it! I tend to be a bit of a maximalist myself so more is usually always better in my opinion. I could maybe do a video on maximalist mindset but would definitely struggle with minimalism.

TÂCHES, Great video! Such a great way to simplify automating modulation; totally takes the complexity, which sometimes stifles creativity, out! I've just got into Bitwig, with version 5 and videos like this is like a kick in gut for not switching to Bitwig sooner.

Great approach. I like the idea of creating "more coolerer" knobs and fiddling with those. Everything already dialed in to ranges that sound great, just play with things to vary the piece. Lovely technique. Thank you!

Hi Taches, i know it was you but in another video in which you explained the settings of modulation knobs. But I don't now which clip on youtube it was, maybe you can help me out here when I ask you here. In this particular video I cannot find, you explained the modulation range of a modulator that you assigned to a value on a device and you had shown a short cut or a method to affect the depth of the modulation range better. As far as I remember from the video: the modulation determine mode was already switched on (with the little blue arrow icon) to specify which parameters should be affected by the modulation routing. You were still in this mode. In this mode, when you use it with a device parameter or knob, it sets the depth of the modulation. But in this video I mean (sorry, I really can't find it anymore) you explained the finding of sweet spots of the device parameter itself by playing with the device parameter while the modulation deflections could already be seen on the parameter in parallel with the little blue line. It must be a short cut or something, because normally when you are in determine mode for the modulation, you cannot change the parameter on the device itself. You must leave the mode to get back to normal mode. The nice thing with this tutorial was, that you've shown a fast way to get sweet spots when you are in modulation determine mode and changing the device parameter in parallel, because the modulation deflections also changed the position. You know what I mean? I hope i explained it with my poor english. And I hope you could help?

i think what you mean is that you have to turn the macro knob to it's maximum value before applying the amount to a Parameter, this way the the Parameter moves while you determine the Amount, this way you find the sweet spot of the maximum amount

Trying to make the bass melodic. It does help the annoying repetitive bass sound. I suggest you avoid repetition by going with four not repetitive notes. & using that for several measures. That's what I do. It's simple.

Thank you for this! Best part is you can always return back to the original without having to adjust a million knobs back! One question: is the reverb effect inserted as a send? Hence the 100% dry wet?

Question from a Bitwig newbie: Once you have the cutoffs mapped to the knobs in Polymer can you modulate those Polymer knobs with say, and LFO or something OR can you assign them to knobs on my keyboard so I can write them manually? Thanks.
2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely Ed! You can even automate by hand with an automation knob WHILE its also being modulated by, say, an LFO.
