Katana刀 is a general term for Japanese-style single-edged curved sword. Katana is a major category, while tachi and uchigatana are minor categories. Tachi太刀 is written as thick太 katana刀. Tachis are bottom-heavy so cavalrymen can use them with one hand easily. Cavalrymen wear them with the blade facing down and the tip of the scabbard facing up to avoid hitting the horse's belly. Uchigatana打刀 is written as striking打 katana刀. Uchigatana are top-heavy to increase the power of their slashing blows. Uchigatana are used by infantrymen with both hands. The user can change the katana's center of gravity by replacing the disc guards with different weights. China, Mongolia, and Southeast Asia imported tachis after the 10th century, so in books from that time the tachi太刀 is written as katana刀.

Is this a Tachi or a Nodachi or O'dachi (literally big sword)? I remember the tachi not only longer but more curved near the hilt than the katana
@bonobsidian6247 Жыл бұрын
You're correct Tachi are a little bit longer than uchigatana but they're more curve and were used on horseback back in the day. A nodachi is basically the short greatsword while the Odachi was basically Big greatsword( The O meaning big) . Now with that said, in my opinion what that person is using is basically a nodachi. The reason why I said that is cause uchigatanas were around 3 shakus which basically 35 to 39 inches long (Including handle) while the nodachi or Odachiwas around 40 inches plus( since there isn't a exact length for what I looked considering that some said that they were 59 inches and above others said that they're from 40 plus) with that being said and again in my opinion I would say that can be qualified as a Nodachi

@@LymmarThe early Heian to Kamakura era tachi's were heavily curved and fairly narrow but by the late Kamakura and Muromachi period (after the Mongol Invasions) the Tachi became less curved and wider and eventually this evolved into the Uchigatana/Katana (I'm really oversimplifying it but that's sort of how Tachi's developed)

Pulled this from a forum somewhere, but I don't have access to the source (Source: The Sword and Same by Henri Joly 1913). 1623- Tokugawa Iyetada prohibited commoners from wearing sword to avoid brawls (the tachi was called O Wakizashi at this time). 1640- Tokugawa Iyemitsu prohibited the attendants of Samurai from carrying tachi. 1670- Tokugawa Iyetsuna issued a regulation making the length of tachi 2’8”, and O Wakizashi 1’8”, and anyone carrying a longer sword was liable for punishment. 1683- Tokugawa Tsunayoshi reiterated the prohibition to common people to wear a long sword, but allowed them to carry a tanto; musicians and artists, even when of the Samurai class, were debarred from carrying a big sword. 1789- It was established that any sword exceeding 1’8” be termed Naga Wakizashi, and anyone carrying such a sword was liable to punishment. Later, the length was reduced to 1’5”.

That's why most HEMA fights have a 2-second tagback rule. No point is awarded if your opponent cuts you immediately after you cut him. Hell, even if you cut him first, some rules even stipulate that you lose the exchange if he hits you in a more lethal spot.

C'est l'exact contraire, la plupart des blessures qu'on voit dans la vidéo ne sont pas rapidement mortelle, vous idéalisez la guerre, le 1vs1 n'existe qu'en duel. Their steel blades are known for poor quality control and heat treatment and are known to snap when clashing against other steel blades.
