I feel you with the 16” saddle! That’s the biggest Pedro can have (short backed) Also we had a bit fitter out a few years ago and it was the most informative thing I’ve ever done! She was with us for 2 hours! I was riding him in a loose ring peanut snaffle, we tried a couple different bits and settled on a sleeved loose ring anatomical with a barrel snaffle , so not all that different from where we were. We also had a bridle fitted, the most beautiful bridle in the world! And the combo made a massive difference on our free walk, something he had been reluctant to do.

Love how you go looking for bargains! Owning a horse is expensive enough, every little saving can be used for something else that will inevitably crop up!! Enjoyed that vlog! ❤️☺️

Absolutely ! Sometimes buying more expensive and better quality is best, but often you can find it at a lower price.

It's so refreshing to see someone else who buys second hand, or looks out for sales etc. I think the equestrian world has become obsessed with image and designer brands (often cheaply made stuff anyway but huge price tag), and I often feel that that sends the wrong image to younger riders, that you have to have the designer brands in order to be taken seriously in the sport. I miss the 90's sometimes, when matchy matchy and £300 jodhpurs didn't exist lol and the most glamorous item was owning a navy Polypad..😂

Such a dream having all that tack, i remember getting my first pony from a horse auction and all I owned was a bucket and a head collar 😅 luckily we were surrounded by good helpful people I had met through part loaning, which is alot more fun than owning!

Yes! I am lucky to be surrounded by lovely people also. I have built up lots of bits throughout my riding career which came in handy and because I'm on full livery, I didn't need to worry about buckets / barrows / tools.

@@RidingWithRhi oh wow that's fantastic, yes it's all about building it up, I sold my pony last year but after 3 years we had an adundance of stuff, and the people who owned the yard borrowed us all the stuff we didn't have, I always adored every single bit of help I got, from so many talented people from all walks of life I wouldn't have known without horses!

Interesting to hear you talk about temperature and rugs and then comparing it to what happens in Australia. Our horses are fairly heavily rugged compared to European standards.

It's a funny one. I think it really does depend on the breed, climate and when it comes down to it, individual horse. Like us I guess, some feel the cold more than others.

Great video! I love having good lighter weight outer rugs & lining them if necessary!! Plus so much easier to wash especially during shedding season! Personally I LOVE the Shires air motion 0g...great rugs for mixed weather & can throw on top of sweet itch / fly rugs without over heating 👍🏻👍🏻
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi 3 жыл бұрын
Oh that's a cool idea! I have seen a few "waterproof" fly rugs advertised, but I was dubious as to whether that made them less breathable as you mentioned.
@blathnaidmajellawatters5902
@blathnaidmajellawatters5902 3 жыл бұрын
@@RidingWithRhi yes I’ve seen some quality waterproof (usually top half) fly rugs on & sweating / overheating is deffo an issue - I find it much better to throw a breathable 0g waterproof on top just as needed or overnight if heavy rain is forecasted, have never found the horses to be too hot even when the weather is mixed & becomes quite warm before I’ve gotten home! Especially for my rescue companion mare who suffers from sweet itch - super important she has her rug on most of the time so had to find a good solution for the warm but wet days!!

Hi Rhi Love all your videos- after watching your gaining confidence whilst hacking alone I went out for the first time by myself on my cob boy - I am soooo proud of him and me haha. One thing I am really wanting it a go pro or cheaper alternative... any recommendations on the best one for hacking ? Cheap but good ! Xx

Thank you! It depends what you want it for - if it's for creating footage out of (e.g. for KZbin) your best bet is GoPro - I use a Hero 7 Black. If it's just to monitor and have as a back up in case you meet a nasty driver etc, there are are much cheaper alternatives out there, though I don't know any off the top of my head.

It baffles me that your horse is quite a bit bigger than mine (13.2) and they have the same side saddle 😅
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi 3 жыл бұрын
Yes... I am upgrading it soon - it's too small for me. It was bought for a different horse (and fitted by a saddler) who couldn't have a bigger saddle because of the impact on their rib. Thus saddle fits Woods just fine, but I'm struggling in it so will be changing it soon 😁

@@RidingWithRhi thank u, iv just had a glance through the blog and wow its crazy the money needed to keep horses, me and my sister had them when we was kids I'm 37 now my granddad converted his double garage into stables for us but that was over 20 years and he used to pick up old vegetables from shops that would have to bin them due to being out of date but nowadays things aren't the same as back in days it's an eye opener for me as well lol but with my daughters only 12 she wouldn't sit and read the blog page she perfers seeing other people in vlogs and what people have to get as a horse owner it's only way she will pay attention. But obviously this vlog u did was helpful and informative so thank u so much for u taking time to go through everything. Hope woody and ur self are doing great

Here’s an idea. Don’t buy any of these. I live in the north. It gets very cold in winter. So how do my horses stay warm. I let them grow thick winter coats. I have never seen them cold. They will sometimes have several inches of snow sitting on their backs. No problem In spring we brush out the winter hair to expose a healthy summer coat. As far as fly bites. I use herbal and chemical sprays, fly masks, stable management of flies. No need to ever use an uncomfortable rug. Let horses roll in dirt and let their skin breathe Happy horse

I understand everyone does things differently. This is just a personal tack haul, what works for me and my horse and I would never purposely put an 'uncomfortable rug' on my horse. For example, when Woody arrived, he was already fully-clipped, so putting him out with no rugs would have made him cold, especially since we were trying to put weight on him at the time. Not all horses, breeds or riding routines are suited to being left to rough off and grow long coats.
