Love ex-race horses. In Australia, lots of Thoroughbreds are ridden at pony club by children. However I will concede that these horses generally live out in a paddock.

Loved this! Brought back lot of memories of when I bought my first pony (when I was 28). I was looking for something around 12, 14hh, a gelding a definitely not Welsh.... I ended up with a gelding, 13.2hh , 25 and Welsh! Lol! He was an absolute dream though, perfect first pony and we had so much fun together, I had never experienced a bond like that with an animal before. I was hear broken when we had to let him go at the age of 38, but it was his time.

I love you’re really planning and buying a horse for life - as it should be. I was v. lucky, my horse was the first horse I viewed - I viewed a second, but it made me realise the first horse was a great match. I’ve had Laddie for 7 years now, he’s the best boi. Best decision! Not all plain sailing mind you, but that’s expected with horses 😂 Good luck with your search, I really hope you find your forever horse!

So excited for you and this journey! In November I bought my first horse in 8 years and it was a crazy process. I love him to bits but I found the ‘window shopping’ and talking stage took the longest, then he was only the second I went to view. I put in an offer the next day subject to vetting and he arrived just over a week later ☺️ I would say that “the one” is an unhelpful idea. There will be dozens of horses out there who fit your criteria and it is necessary to be logical about it. I adored mine’s advert but had a bad experience at the first viewing so lowered my expectations drastically for the second as it was the same day. He was very sweet though and my husband sealed it the next day by asking “if they were to ring you now saying someone else had bought him would you be upset?” It was an immediate “yes” so there was my answer! I just trusted that the vet would pick up any injuries/lameness/concerns as I’m also inexperienced in that area. It’s a strange time at the moment but I hope you’re doing okay with the stress of it all. It will be worth it in the end ❤️😁

Yep, putting up my hands, here also buying a horse during a pandemic. Delightful with movement restrictions and all....ah yes, and Brexit now too. I would have waited for an easing of restrictions and the situation as a whole, but it was an odd culmination of bizarre circumstances for me. Just gotta go with the flow. But the buying process is not romantic at all.

@@miaorla5009 - OMG - He sounds stunning. I wish I could see him. Is ur Instagram as your name is here? As he's only 2 start with light groundwork & stretches for his top line development. Do you know the carrot/ bow method? Do each side only once & then he gets his dinner! As he gets closer to 3, you can increase his # of ground training. I also watch Tara on KZbin. She bought an incredible Arab stallion @ 3 yr old, had him gelded (she wasn't going to breed him, although he has champion bloodlines) & started his groundwork for wn entire year, backed him & trained him herself. Amazing job. She's working on 2 yr old Bella, who was a 1 yr old, completely unhandled filly. She won't back her horses until 4 to prevent spine & leg problems. Kissing Spine is career ending, painful & caused by too much too soon. I don't want to see that for you & your horse. So preventable & the surgery is $$$$$. Both Warwick Sciller & Tara create amazingly responsive, sane horses - all with positive reward, scratches & treats - no whips, etc. They really become partners who look after their humans. I hope that for you. Is your trainer riding your 2 year old??? If so, maybe you want to wait on that, or is she just teaching handling & groundwork @ 2?

Kissing Spine: SO PREVENTABLE! It's caused by riding/ jumping TOO EARLY, and too intense of a program for age. Until 6 yrs. old - their spines are still growing/ hardening. Go slow... or plan to retire your horse at 8 to 9 years old. Take note EU Standards don't let horses compete in Jumping Shows until they're 6 yrs old minimum. Best are the 10-12 year olds!

A sane minded horse is a main priority, hack the horse not just the sand school, ask for a video of it being shod, and five stage vettings are good but remember they don’t guarantee the horses future health, I had my first horse five stage vetted, X-ray legs, and a physio check he passed everything and 2 weeks later he was kicked in the field and broke his back leg and needed major surgery that’s why horse insurance is a must and the vets bill came to 8k and 2 years of rehab and completely start again training, and a 5 year old 17hh sports horse on box rest in winter was a complete nightmare, you need to make sure the horse is happy in the stable for a few of days without blowing their minds or out in the field without issues. My advice is get insurance, buy the safe horse over the flashy one, if you feel pushed walk away, see the horse in bad weather so winds and rain, and spend time with horse and see it several times. And make a worst case scenario case, horses do go wrong and it’s not all riding happy, bad days happen and it’s best to think ahead. Good luck 😀
@RidingWithRhi

Covid prices are so controversial right now. As someone looking to buy my first horse it is something I’m trying to understand, it just adds an extra level of difficulty. I’m looking for similar to you, but more in the 15-16hh bracket, an allrounder to do hacking, schooling, fun rides and low level competing. I’d love to find a family friend that my non-horsey family members could come and be involved with. Most importantly it needs to be safe and have no vices and pass a vetting! Back in October, even November this was relatively easy to find at mid 4 figures, and now as you say they’re going for almost 5 figures! I just can’t afford or justify it, and I’m really hoping prices come down after lockdown. I can understand people selling, breeding and dealing are now able to make more of a with these higher prices, and that’s great for them. I understand that livery, and feed adds up, but I don’t think it’s fair to expect that to influence prices. I understand schooling can increase prices, and equally I would expect to pay more through a respectable dealer than private sales. It’s the same with cars. Surely a long term and well suited home is more important than price? These prices are pushing so many people like myself out of the market. For buyers, especially buying unseen at the moment, it is so risky. Like you, I won’t be buying unseen. Most appropriate horses available under 5 figures have vices or would fail a vetting and it’s making it even more stressful. And as you said, the good ones are going so quickly and I don’t want to be rushed into my decision. And to see people on Facebook groups talking saying that people shouldn’t buy a horse if they can’t afford these prices makes me feel so judged for my budget. I have a healthy budget, however I don’t want to spend that all on just buying a horse. I’ve seen people lose their jobs with Covid and want to keep plenty in savings for tack, livery, insurance, farrier, vet bills etc. I feel like it’s buyers vs sellers on this topic at the moment. I do worry about the amount of animals that will end up in rescue centres or have been ruined by novice owners and sold on for cheap after Covid. I feel like it needs to be talked about a lot more than it is right now. Like you, I don’t want an ex-racehorse (for my first horse at least) and that’s all I seem to be able to find at the moment. Even green cobs advertised as happy hackers are going for £6-7k. I’ve also seen very few loans or LWVTB understandably as it’s risky for the owner but again makes it tricky buying in lockdown. I will definitely be searching on Horsemart and Horsequest more so than Facebook pages. When sellers don’t post a price bracket, location or any info it makes it such hard work. It’s all so disheartening and makes me regret not buying a horse I saw before Christmas at a realistic price. Hopefully prices even out to a happy medium for buyers and sellers and hopefully I find the right one eventually. I’m happy to wait but it’s hard. I wish you luck in finding your dream horse and would love to chat more about buying. I just want to finish my mini rant (sorry) by saying I find these videos incredibly reassuring, useful and informative so thank you x

I totally understand. Sometimes it’s just nice to be able to check in with someone else and know that you’re not alone in what is a frustrating situation. It’s also helpful to know that other people understand you when you say “horse buying is supposed to be romantic and fun.., but it’s actually really depressing”. Your right one will come along just as he will for me! My friend said for every month you don’t find one, put what you save on livery etc towards your budget, which I think is great advice even if you don’t want to spend above X amount. I agree with you on the Facebook debate - of course dealers and breeders should be able to get their money back on horses they’ve produced, the challenge is all of these 5 year olds who are 4 weeks in from coming over from Ireland, newly broken, never even seen an XC jump and still going for 8k 🤣 I also agree that it’s not that people can’t afford the monthly costs of upkeep, a lot of people just don’t have the thousands it now costs as an upfront lump sum. Don’t give up! That horse before Christmas wasn’t the one - when they are, you just know and you stop looking. If your gut said no there’s always a reason why.

A year and a half ago my dad proposed the idea of adopting an American wild mustang for $25. I had been riding for about 9 years at this point and asked for a horse every day so my dad thought this would be a great idea for me and the horse to learn together. I had always seen myself retraining an off the track thoroughbred as my first horse since that’s what my trainer does as a side job but my dad said it was a wild mustang or no horse at all so I took it. 18 months later I have yet to ride my horse which is very discouraging because I thought she would be my forever horse. What did she say happened? Do you need a Vet check? Bowed tendon? That's a riding horse's end! I don't mean to scare you, but full stall rest for 2 weeks?? Also, how big is your Mustang & how much does your trainer weigh? Too much weight at 4-6 yrs old & jumping then can cause Kissing Spine by 8. Be safe & good, good luck Anne. I rode my whole life, minus college & few very brief times- never caused an injury.
@annegulbransen3961
@annegulbransen3961 3 жыл бұрын
@@mdee860 the injury was not my trainer's fault! My mom was there when it happened. My mustang was getting getting desensitized to things on her back and spooked while on the lunge line. We think she gashed open her own leg because it was on the inside hind leg in an area where she couldn't have cut it on the round pen. A vet was called but he was not very optimistic and said that he didn't think stiches would even hold in that area and would have left without doing anything if my trainer hadn't talked him into cleaning and dressing the wound. My trainer has been a big help in caring for her while I'm at college. Ginger is on stall rest right now with hand walking two times a day. My parents have been very diligent in doing that and I will most likely take over when I come back from college in a week!

@@annegulbransen3961 - so happy to hear that Anne. Yes, an inside of leg gash from a frightened horse - most likely clipped itself with own hoof. I was worried your young horse maybe bowed a tendon in training. Happy to hear that everyone is pitching in and caring for your new horse while you are away. It does not sound like trainer induced injury at all, from how you described it. Even older, well trained horses can & do injure themselves out in a pasture. When you're home from school, I really suggest watching those newer Warwick Schiller videos in the morning, prior to seeing your horse every day. That is really where training is headed & you'll be that much smarter for it & your horse will be happier & more chill. He really works marvels with high strung, excitable horses & even those that need to be re-trained. All with no anger, no whips, etc. You do have to be firm sometimes, but never with a bit or a whip. If you're going to spend time working with your horse when you get home, might as well do it the right way, the first time. Take the best of what your trainer does & add it to his method & you'll end up with a safe & sane partner! Wishing you & your horse the best.

PRICES!!! Omg 😳 I’ve been trying so hard... sold within hours it’s mad. Also people buying please beware of rip offs... I spent money on a 5* vetting which it badly failed... I asked for a £200 discount (which is v v little for how badly it failed, the horse was majorly overpriced but I loved it) and it was refused and the horse went up again higher price and it sold within hours I assume to someone who didn’t vet it! The hunt continues ❤️🤩🙌🏼🐎

@RidingWithRhi

Honestly it's really hard. You just have to be on your guard as much as possible: look closely at every video and question on everything - it's almost more about what isn't shown or said as it is about what is. Eg. If you never see a clip of them on a circle, or doing a transition, or lots of them jumping but never over fillers, or the ad says they can jump 1 metre 30 but in the videos they are only popping 2ft, always question it. Sometimes it's nothing but sometimes is deliberate. Ask for show names so you can look up records, ask deliberate, direct questions about vet history. Some instructors / professionals offer "horse finding" services and I would personally see if you can work with one if you aren't 100% confident that you can spot issues on your own. I saw horses I would have potentially said yes to, had my coach say no and found out a few months later that the previous owners had been hiding a huge behavioural issue etc. Not everyone is bad and the majority aren't, but trust your gut, ask lots of questions and don't let your desire for a horse make you make a rash decision. It's so much better to wait than spend X amount on the wrong horse, or to spend £500 on a vetting rather than trying to save money only to find out the horse needs a £3,000 operation etc. Ultimately whatever you do, things can always go wrong and vetting can be clean and then the horse can have an accident etc but do everything you can to set yourself up for success by being organised, practical and vigilant.

The girls from Buck off banter did a section on horse prices and actually I think they’re fairly fair at the moment. Breeding or bring on a horse costs a lot in time and money and I think a lot of people don’t appreciate this. My youngster was cheap ish, I bought her at 6 weeks and have had her with me since weaning, obviously I don’t plan on selling her but if I did I’d be losing A LOT of money. She’s rising 4 now and been lightly backed but all of the ground work etc has been done by me yet she’s not worth much more than I paid for her in real terms. Realistically a horse is only worth what people are willing to pay but the time and effort put into producing them is often overlooked and if a horse is up for 5k then it’s probably worth it.

I’m looking for share and even that is the hardest thing in the world to do!!!😫😩 will I ever find one? I go to school so my mum says it has to be closer enough to get their by a bus and if anyone takes a public bus they know it takes forever to get home, however that situation is being slightly resolved because my dad is agreeing that he can drive me there (he works from home) but but it has to be under 40 minutes even forty minutes isn’t very ‘good’ because it’s unrealistic which I understand and I really do appreciate and I’m very great full that they’ll let me do horse share but they say no to a lot of adverts even when they’re really good but too far. Anyways, my dad looks OJ right horse right home and it takes him two seconds to find one local and one that’s not for 18+ (I’m twelve )which was Inca the Irish SPORT HORSE 🙈 I’ve ridden horses the same height the same age (riding school horses and one in my pfp 🥰) but she said safe forward but not strong and gentle she was very sweet which great because I’ll try any horse with consent at the same time I’ve never sat on a dressage many many push button horse so it felt very exciting but also that feeling were I’m like ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘I’ve gone blank everything I’ve learnt is wrong’ so the lady said that she can give me lessons and I’ll start all over and she’ll give me lessons and I can do yard chores (which I’m more than happy to do) and who knows after, the lady was extremely kind and supportive but at the same time I’m not sure she wants to take me on as her horse does need a sharer and exercise. Riding in a was a feeling I’d want to take on and become really good one day however because of the expenses I would be riding only twice a month and not even now because of the national lockdown (horse sharing and loaning is still allowed but the owner didn’t feel comfortable) and who knows how long it’ll last. My goal is to have a furry legged best friend do more riding especially with less tack ( I loooove riding without stirrups let alone a saddle), improve riding and even some competitions! The second horse I viewed was 14.2 so a pony was Mr Justin who had a quirky greedy personality that I really enjoyed although he had three other sharers and I think it was riding school so it would have only been specific slots then he’d be passed on to the next client, I’m not snobby but I wasn’t really looking for something like that although when I sat on him and warmed him up I could only get so many strides of trot let a alone a canter from him but then she said he was coming up to be a 26 yo so it seemed to me that he probably would have liked to just be having a happy retirement with little children on his back for occasional pony rides, however I’m not an expert and I’m sure he’s in great care just not suitable for me which is annoying because then I would have been visiting and riding twice a week which could have been a dream especially since it was a reasonable price. So that leaves me here not sure if I want to ride Inca please let me know if you have any suggestions and thank you so much if you read this! Ahh I. Just needed to get this off my chest as it’s driving me stir crazy stay safe bye💖

Out of interest what prompted the change so soon after moving Ted onto full livery given that he’s a bit stressy in some circumstances? Moving yards is a big thing that his owners obviously agreed to so was the decision already made that you’d be giving up his loan, will he be staying where he is or going back to his original yard? Not a criticism but genuine interest.

@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi 3 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on the horse, their past/injuries and what you want to do with them. I personally wouldn't really look much above 12/13 because I know I want to keep competing, schooling etc for a few years yet, but if you just wanted a happy hacker for example then 18 might be fine. I know horses who have retired in their teens and others who have gone on to be ridden a few times a week in their 30s so it really does depend. What I would say is that when you buy an older horse, you must also be prepared to care for them during their retirement, even when they can no longer be ridden, which may come up quicker than you hoped or expected.

I’m a year late yet I’m still coming for a second comment. Don’t take this personally, but I can’t stand it when people diss my breed. Thoroughbreds can have plenty of bone. I’ve known some thoroughbreds to be as tall as 18HH, and the one I’m buying is 17.2hh and she’s built like a warmblood. Thoroughbreds can have amazing hooves and legs, just as any horse. “Don’t like the way they think”… so you don’t like how any horses think? Not all thoroughbreds are “sharp and hot”. We have a few OTTBs who are 6-8 years old, still somewhat fresh from the track who are the laziest horses ever. It’s honestly disappointing to hear someone be so discriminating against an entire breed through misconceptions.

Because that at least gives them some variety of fences, turns, distance and shows how they cover ground and approach different types of obstacles. You jump one fence in a school to show how they approach, take off, land. Jumping that same thing over and over again to me is not the same as a course and doesn’t help me understand the horse more than seeing it jump that fence twice.
