Brilliant podcast with Rob Wootton awesome angler. I had the pleasure of going on his and Lee's coaching days on southfield res earlier this year and what Rob taught me as totally altered my feeder fishing couldn't recommend their coaching sessions. Ps the hat I'm wearing his robs as I was wearing a competitors baseball cap so Rob gave me his lol.

If the Angling Trust never had the competitions side of the organisation, the nationals/fisho/Team England etc, in which you need to be a member to take part, how much would they lose financially? would they be able to stay the self-proclaimed governing body of fishing? As you guys said, fragmentation, stereotype and public portrayal are factors to overcome. 'Rock and hard place' springs to mind. Great podcast as usual.....

This year's youth and junior national is at Partridge. Thats 255 miles from my door in Sussex. A days travelling, a day fishing and a day driving back, plus hotel and bait costs.

A big thing for me, as a dad of two young boys, is that when I fish a match it's usually 8-12hrs away from the family and another £50-70. Luckily the money is OK, but time away isn't easy to manage, if there were two or two and a half hr matches on a Sunday morning it would be much easier to plan some time in for yourself rather than a whole long day. I love to fish a 5 or 6 hr match but, when adding travel time and the draw and results it's a long day. We need to become modern.

As far as recruitment goes I believe we can all do our bit. Take someone fishing a couple of times a year, I introduce 1 person per year and if one person takes it up and we all did this, then we double the match angling scene.

I bet when Tom Pringle starts fishing with pop ups he can’t just can’t stop.

Only 36 minutes in but Rob’s point about getting younger people involved to attract younger people is bang on. I see fish with Carl is doing a challenge to try and win one of the big fishing tournaments this year. Kids consume 99% of their media through KZbin and if one of the big fishing KZbinrs can collab with a KZbinr from a non fishing background it will spark a whole new generation of anglers. Look at the impact it’s had on the boxing world over the past few years. Pro boxers won’t say it’s necessarily a good thing though! 😁

Nearly all pools and lakes around by me have a rule no under 16's unless accompanied by an adult. So parents have to spend their time fishing and perhaps they have no clue or time. A summer school would help, and parents could drop the kids off knowing they were supervised and safe.

When I ran the Wyche anglers junior team 30 years ago I had 40 anglers trying to get into the national junior championship team,out of them only 4 still go fishing and the senior team stopped fishing 20 years ago,this very sad ,but what the answer is I have no idea

Brilliant podcast matt. I do think Rob is a top class angler that needs to chill slightly. Looks so tense
@lukemills86539 ай бұрын
I believe social media is the key. I think light drama/ pundits talking about festival results, international results etc. make mega stars. The youth want something to debate and something. That can occupy them during the week when they’re not fishing. Yeah encourage kids to fish but I honestly believe social media and scene coverage is as important

I think sponsored anglers are missing the point,just have a tot up what your kit costs to the average parent!! thats why you don,t get youngsters fishing.

When my little boy was about six, he said to me, there is no Santa, parents buy the presents, I said to him, do you know why parents have to buy presents, he said why, I said because their kids stopped believing, as soon as you stop believing, Santa stops coming.

That is an interesting point on the state of match fishing. My club has no members under the age of 45. When u go on matches there are next to no anglers under 50. Our club will die with our generation as will commercials and match angling in general.
