Tackling the Canter at Waverley Park Equine
Today, Pablo, Ian, and I headed to Waverley Park Equine for a clinic focused on developing a jumping canter and building trust in ourselves and each other.
It was Pablo's and my first group session, and Pablo was quite unsettled. He spent most of the time calling out for Echo, making him quite 'unrideable' at times. Despite the chaos and the freezing temperatures (2°C with a wind chill of -2°C), Pablo managed to focus and lock onto his jumping, even while shouting out!
We aimed to improve Pablo's "rideability" by:
Achieving a quality canter with a consistent pace through turns.
Maintaining straightness on approach and landing.
Enhancing suppleness and responsiveness over a series of fences.
With me it was concentrating on:
Maintaining a proper position.
Relaxing to release shoulder tension.
Keeping contact with still but soft hands.
Consistently looking ahead to the next fence.
Today, I had a major breakthrough with getting the 'feel' and overcoming the 'fear' of the 'right' canter. The difference in Pablo's rhythm and jump was incredible once I allowed him to travel with the 'right' canter and energy to the fence.
