Hey champs! Just pitching in a little as immersive waxing is a topic that where there are still a lot of incorrect myths and misconceptions being spread, and some of those were done here. In short - you dont have to ultrasonic, your temperature window is pretty massive, you dont have to cool it to a temp or it all comes off, you just remove chain after swishing once it has melted (and you dont have to stand there and watch it melt). Where does this information come from? It really might be time to look at some of the actual correct information around waxing. The benefits of immersive waxing for offroad riders is vastly greater that for road, simply the world of dirt and dust presents a great challenge to drip lubricants remaining low friction and low wear. And have you seen the cost of some chains and cassettes? The challenge for chain and its lubricant is pretty extreme when riding offroad. Imagine riding with your wheel and bb bearings with no seals - how would your bearings be feeling and running after a few rides.... If you can imagine that, it is vastly worse for your chain as it is a) much more exposed and b) extremely high pressure loads due to small parts size. Running a good wax drip lubricant is a great start, many like squirt you mentioned do an admirable job. But to keep a chain low friction and thus low wear (and then low wear to your drivetrain) - you need to do regular flush clean resets. Fun fact in short - It is more difficult by far to try to maintain a drip lubricant chain low friction than to immersive wax. Ok. I’m the guy you were describing about chain waxing. You got a few things a little wrong. You just gotta set it up for success by making sure that you have removed every bit of lube/gunk. No need for a special cleaning device. Just give it several acetone baths until it’s completely clean. I wax my chain when I wash my bike. I simply wash the bike with chain on and make sure I wash the chain too. Then I take the chain off and dry it good then it goes in the crock pot on low. No need to worry about temp. Low is perfect. Leave it in for 10 minutes, swish it good, take it out, hang to dry for 5 minutes and put it back on the bike. I’ve never had to rewax after riding in wet but if it’s wet, I’m gonna wash the bike anyway and go through this process. It’s so nice to always have a super clean, quiet and fast drivetrain. It’s super easy and fast once you get the process down

Interesting question about tire width. I wanted a 2.5 kryptotal but in DH casing both front and back only go to 2.3.

Waxing for me makes perfect sense. Crossing a creek washes the dry lube off wet lube hold all the dust and dirt. Wax is the only thing that works in the widest scenarios

Hi! I was the first question! I have a '22 spec turbo levo, it came with 2.6 grid trail butcher t9/eliminator t7. I'm not familiar with specialized tires at all really. I came from minion dhf and dissector rear. I'd grab an assegai/dhr combo if I got new tires. Thanks for the info guys!

Great listen and enjoy the banter. Nerd Alert: Thought I might share some info on carbon vs aluminum, from an aerospace perspective. Although there are exceptions to the rule, carbon/epoxy composites will not fatigue the same way metals do. The epoxy resin will degrade with UV exposure, but the outer layers will protect the rest and my suspicion is carbon bars are not strength critical, but stiffness. Meaning that the strength is well beyond what is required to ensure the stiffness is correct. The main concern with carbon bars, barring any manufacturing defects, will be damage caused by out of plane impacts. Carbon fiber composites do not handle out of plane loads well (load perpendicular to carbon fibers, such as an impact on the surface of the bars). Impacts in particular can cause BVID (barley visible impact damage), where on the surface everything looks ok but under the surface there are tiny cracks in the resin, and in extreme cases even fibers. I don’t have much experience with damaging carbon bars, as I have always run aluminum, but if I was running carbon bars I would count my number of hard crashes that impact direct on the bars and replace eventually as a precaution. It might never break, but I wouldn’t want to risk it unless I had access to NDI such as ultrasonic to ensure there is nothing brewing underneath. I tend to clamp things had hard on the bars, which is a great way to cause unseen damage.

If I had a guess on the specialized tires they are 2.6 wide and the sidewalks are really flexing. what ends up happening is this they deflect a lot side to side at a given pressure than something with a stiffer sidewall. The grid casing is nowhere near stiff enough, in my opinion

The only circumstances I would run a wax chain on a mountain bike would be for an xc race. And I would have a separate chain for normal riding that same bike.

@masonjohnson5583 waxing makes no sense for my type of riding. There is an advantage if you're searching for every last gain, but there is a vast difference between race prep and just wanting to go out on the bike for fun. If it works for you, that's great. I even enjoy it occasionally, but if I buy 1 $90 chain a year I'll live.
