On my '02 Tacoma 4X4 everything went according to the video except the removal of the restraining ring. A couple of hours of the ten minutes went into futile attempts to defeat the spring. Finally I used a small pry bar and a three pound shop sledge to gently tap the device in a counter-clockwise motion. First tap, and it was out. I'm sure that's how it's designed to work. Remember, don't force it. Use a bigger hammer. The repair did make my Tacoma shift like a new one, as claimed in this video.

A little grease inside the plastic bushing helps too
@andyandresen8294 жыл бұрын
Just tried for 3 hours of unreal struggle to change these shift bushings. I ordered the cheap Dorman from Rock Auto and put the larger seat bushing in the trans receiver then went to put the linkage bushing (white one) on the ball. I noticed that you had to put this bushing on a pad on the floor and push the shift lever for all your worth to get it on.. Once on it would not pivot at all unless you grabbed the edge with channel locks and moved it. This was with a liberal coat of grease on the ball. I thought that just maybe this went on tight because this bushing would get allot of stress. The real problem is once these POS Dorman bushings are on, trying to get the white bushing into the receiver was impossible. After a huge struggle I noticed that the grease on this white bushing showed it only went into the housing about 20%. After numerous attempts to get it in I ground this white bushing down and after an hour of grinding and fitting it finally dropped in. I needed the truck. I went inside and ordered OEM bushings from a Toyota supplier. The original Toyota bushings came. I took it back apart and reassembled the shift lever. The white bushing rotated freely on the ball and went right into the receiver. I was able to push the holding device down instantly with moderate pressure. The Dorman setup would let this holding clamping device down but would not go the last 1/16 to 1/8 inch to rotate and lock it closed. WARNING. If yo7 buy one of these Dorman bushing sets it very well will not fit. The tolerances are very small and not visually recognizable.

Thanks for the vid. It didn't solve my issue. Bought the bushing ($16 on amazon now, lol), and went to replace it on my '02 3.4L 4x4 with 158K on the clock, only to discover the existing one still looks brand new and is still flexible. Some staining from the grease but that's it. Even has an extra rubber gasket underneath it that the replacement part doesn't come with. I added a little more grease and put it all back together. At least it gave me a chance to clean up the plastic housing a bit. No way it's ever been replaced before as I've had the truck since 44K miles and didn't even know that part existed til this vid. So wondering what else it might be. Something much more expensive I'm sure cause that's how my luck rolls lol.

Totally fixed my problem. For me, it started by slipping out of 1st and 3rd, especially when throttle was released . Then it got worse and was having a hard time getting into third (I could lift up on shifter and ease it in, but it would grind pretty bad if I didn't). So far shifts nice and easy after this fix. Thanks! I found the hardest part was removing the plastic cap and getting the spring loaded clip back in place, that required quite a bit of muscle, finesse and cussing, and actually getting the carpet and boot back in place was a pain too. So, long story short the actual mechanical repair part is super easy...

Might have to give this a try because my 02 with 240K miles has been difficult to shift into R most of the time and 1st some of the time. I would have to pump the clutch a few times and then it would go into R, so I don't know if that indicates anything. The other gears shift fine.

I am replacing the metal “cap” (Toyota calls it) that covers the spring. But it doesn’t fit over the black plastic piece that covers the shift lever.. does that black plastic come off (not the boot. The long cylindrical cover)? If not, how does this metal cap come off? It certainly can’t go the other way..

Had to do this on my base 2WD '96 Tacoma. Actually, without the console, it's harder. The shift boot retainer screws are buried under the carpet & paddng. Had to take the dash-bin, right kick-panel and sill cover off to get the carpet loose on the passenger side. Then lift it enough to get my hand & ratchet under. Either all that or slice up the carpet.

If it’s an after market (probably Dorman). It will not fit. The white bushing will not fully seat making it impossible to get the clamp on. I fought like crazy to get this after market pieces assembled. I finally realized the white bushing was too big to fully seat it. Ordered OEM Toyota. Took less than 10 minutes to put it together.
