Awesome stuff as usual... Only thing I can think to add is that Pedri and Gavi would routinely swap positions sometimes. It looked like it was something Xavi asked them to do but it also contributed to how porous Barca were down that flank with Dembele as the fullback. There were a lot of times Xavi called Gavi over to explain to him to be more mindful whenever he went into that interior/half space

Interesting game plan from Xavi and Barcelona tonight but defensively there are still some work to do. We can’t ignore the piece of the puzzle, fullbacks bring to the table; maybe trying to invert them in the midfield to have help the CDM could still work but that’s Pep way and it requires quality players to play these these kinds of game plans! He used similar in al sadd. Plan was correct but execution was not that good. Fati changed that. Raphina for dembele Fati for Torres Kounde for Christensen or garica Kessie for gavi And this tactic will work good and they will be stronger defensively.

The strongest tactic/adjustment Xavi made was taking Ferran Torres out of the game. (He shouldn't have been in to begin with but definitely should not have started in the 2nd half). The absence of Busquets (causing Gavi to be rotated to the pivot position) combined with the complete ineptitude of Ferran Torres in all elements of the game is why Barca looked so weak in possession for the first 65 minutes of the game. As soon as Torres was taken off and Ansu Fati's brilliance was able to show through (playing in the same position). Barca looked dangerous whenever they attacked and caused La Real to play defensively, while possession was consistently in their third. The other benefit of having Fati come on was that Pedri was able to drop back and play in his comfortable position towards the middle behind the front line to be able to distribute the ball effectively. Ferran Torres should never again start for this team barring injuries to other players. He's just not good enough and he's robbing another more effective player from being inserted in the lineup.

Great analysis.. thank you.. i do want to comment that Pedri and Gavi siwtched a lot but Gavi was the one attacking the space between then left full back and center back more than Pedri in the game.. his task was recovery and Pedri more of a pivote where the ball always was sent to him after it has been recovered to hold and distribute play, so he was usually behind the line of Gavi linking up to De Jong. Another thing I noticed was after scoring the 2nd goal Barcelona huddled and i think Pedri gave instructions to De Jong to maintain his defensive position on the rt side next to Arujo as Socidad will try to overload that side. Which contributed to both interceptions that brought about the 3rd and 4th goal. It was a fun game to watch. Cheers

The change was because of ansu fati. when fati came on in the 60th ish minute he immideatly assisted 2 and scored 1. hope that answers your question

@@Kdotkage also Real Sociedad lost intensity when Ansu get in+La Real did a triple sub with Silva going off which meant a decrease of individual quality in the MF which reduced their offensive threat.Ansu was a joy to see his game intelligence but also his positional awareness then add his actual skills with the ball and the match was done.

I also noticed that just before the second goal he (Xavi) went all out to attack when bringing on Ansu & Raphinha. Balde who was v. attacking minded still helped out defensively. Guess he was surprised by the quick turnaround. After they scored twice, they brought Alba on for Dembele.

I don’t recall Balde dropping as a full back. the defensive responsibilities one the left side were given to one of the pivots (gavi), so he played more like a winger which was surprising since Xavi chose him over raphinha and ansu. Didn’t like the first 60 minutes, We were a mess defensively and meh offensively.

What changed was that real was doing a high press for 60 minutes plus and at some point they were gonna burst. You can see it at tbe start of the second half even before the Barcelona substitutions they were already pressing less and staying more as a block in their own half and being less intense by the minute.everything got culminated when Barcelona subbed in fresh legs on the attack
