If you let Kroos so much time on the ball you are destined to fail I felt right away. Liverpool had 3 runners op front that they could never reach while they were a man short in midfield to battle Modric, Kroos and Casemiro. One of the best midfields in the game.

Yeah it helps if you’ve got world class players against a defensive car crash. His tactics were good but Liverpool are losing against crap premier league sides at the moment. Liverpool reserves would get trounced by Real Madrid reserves while the first teams would be pretty evenly matched. Liverpool were the worst I’ve seen them first half. There were loads of unforced errors and sloppy moments. Too many to count which is why I’m a bit apprehensive about purely crediting Zidanes tactics. They wouldn’t have worked nearly as well had Liverpool got two premier league standard Centre backs. First goal was just a ball over the top delivered by Kroos (who was out of this world) that was defended poorly by Phillips. Then they were gifted on by Trent and then the last one was terrible defending and should have been saved. Madrid was deserved winners against a broken Liverpool side. This current team doesn’t stand a chance against top class opposition.

That's what they did and conceded...ATT was too wide and not in the right defensive position. Vini's pace defeated him. Liverpool's defense is porous and the midfield was easily trounced. It didn't help that Militao was in good form

Real Madrid is a press resistance team. All Real Madrid players are really good at chipping over opponents to find teammates. Vasquez, Asensio, Vini, Mendy, Kross and Modric all were chipping ball over players when all the angles were covered which made Liverpool so hard to press. Even when Real Madrid are pressed intensely and in organized manner, they will still find their players because they are too skillful on the ball, one-twos, chips, dummy, back heels, they just have insane control on the ball.

The major difference between us and Madrid on the night was that they wanted to win the game more. The press from the front three and midfield throughout the whole game was lazy, which allowed Madrid’s full backs and Kroos/Modric to pick up the ball without any pressure, and find the runs of Vini. Jr/Benzema easier.

Great analysis. I think you forgot to mention some details, but overall great job. After the third goal, Benzema practically became an CAM, thus creating a diamond 4-4-2 with Vini and Asensio up front. This allowed Real Madrid to have more possession and control. Later, ZZ subbed Asensio for Valverde, and changed to 5-3-2/3-5-2, with Valverde helping Vasquez on the right side. I think this was around minute 70-80. Zidane knew that giving Liverpool spaces at that period of the game could turn the game around, and Valverde is great wherever you put him. This was just my interpretation of the last 20 minutes, I may be wrong, but that's what I saw.

Sometimes its like real is using 2 holding midfielders in kroos and modric to get the ball higher upfield. It allows one CB to make a run forward and it creates a little confusion in the oppositions pressing. It opens the possibility to one-two passing while kroos or modric occupy that CB position. They have worked it out so nicely recently.

Wasn't easy winning.If I recall, Real dominated the first leg up till Ramos mad a mistake, then got a red card. In the second match, it was similar, Varane gave away stupidly a goal early in the match, then he did it again when Real Madrid equalized. It was very unlucky game. Ironically both Varane and Ramos did not play against Liverpool.

Liverpool will lost again if they play their fullbacks offensively again.. kroos will give accurate long balls to the wingers just like the last match. Kroos is so good in accurate long ball passes.
