Carvajal stepping up and playing like his old self prior to all the injuries was a great sight. He absolutely nullified any advantage Liverpool might've thought they had. He kept Diaz quiet, which forced TAA to join the attack more and more, and they had to keep force feeding Salah who was off form for most of the match. Once Carvajal showed he was up to task, Valverde started getting more and more involved and that was that. Great stuff from both teams!

@@Ethan-ix7jh Shots don't really tell the whole story though, 24 shots but only 2.09xG? Whereas RM had only 4 shots but 0.92xG. Real Madrid did have less chances, but all of their chances were of much higher quality than Liverpool - looking at the shot map also bolsters this point, they had so many of those shots outside of the box, on the contrary RM had 3 of their 4 shots well within the box. Besides, Real Madrid's game plan going into this was to be highly-defensive + counter-attack since they realised Liverpool will play and press high up the pitch, so counter attacking was going to be their best chance of winning, therefore if the tactical philosophy of both of the teams were literally opposites, the stats (other than the actual goal, of course) are going to be insignificant.

Mane seemed to give up on Diaz after a few missed passes and runs between them, so he ignored the left side and played only with Salah instead. Whenever Diaz had the ball he was been isolated badly and disposed of easily. Maybe Klopp should have brought in Jota earlier (maybe during halftime) but maybe he wanna give Diaz chance I guess. @@jayvee8914 I agree that Real did a great job of forcing Liverpool to play to a slower tempo, but even at that tempo, Liverpool created enough chances to win the game. @RyanPasta2 жыл бұрын
Arguing Madrid controlled the match is odd, sure they won it but it was on the back of one of the greatest goalkeeping performances of all time. Liverpool could've had 2 or 3 goals but Courtois was the difference. They controlled the tempo of the match sure, but Liverpool were the better side by miles. Being better doesn't always mean you win though.
@oldskoolmusicnostalgia2 жыл бұрын
You don't understand tempo and rhythm and its importance in a game, there's little one can do for you then. Even more when you believe that taking more inaccurate and harmless shots than your opponent equates to being "the better side by miles".
@samuelpraneeth57962 жыл бұрын
@@oldskoolmusicnostalgia Well the data disagrees with you. There were 3 high xG shots that Courtois saved and before you say they were "harmless" or "easy saves", all of these things are taken into account for xG. Real didn't "slow" the game down because that's not something one team can do voluntarily if the other team just refuses to stop pressing, which Liverpool weren't able to since they were on their 63rd game of the season. A well-rested Liverpool would be able to keep the tempo up the whole game and there'd have been nothing Real could have done about it. That's how they beat low block teams in the Prem despite Klopp never having had a Plan B for such teams. Real had a great defensive game and the counter-attacks they managed to execute were very good and they deserved the win, but Liverpool definitely had the better offensive game.

The game in play reminded me a lot of that Burnley game they lost in January last year. Liverpool do this ineffectual compress thing which reduces their threat dramatically about 15 seconds after they’ve got the ball. They don’t work the ball cleverly enough to reset the game imo. Not enough is made of the absolute eye of the needle in valverdes pass. On any other day that cross skims off one of the three heels there and Vinicius doesn’t get the ball.

Great analysis. I think Carvajal's run deserves a mention as well when Valverde had the ball and drove forward before his assist. This run from Carvajal distracted Van Dijk for a second and instead of him pressing Valverde hard, he had to take into account the possibility of Valverde playing it to Carvajal and hence his "strange" body shape, as he was getting ready to press Carvajal and intercept his (potential) cross. The space left by Robertson is the number #1 reason in my opinion for the goal, TAA was unlucky to keep Vini Jr onside by inches. That's not to blame Robertson obviously but just my view on the goal, and the smart play to pull Robertson out-of-position and the clever moves from all Real Madrid players for the goal were brilliant.

Couple of things to say despite this being fantastic analysis… chiefly about the goal: The cross may have been a shot… looking for a deflection or play. Madrid were definitely more than confident with their plan as underdogs. Remarkable the Henderson MO switch had zero effect really for Pool’s fortunes. The pass leading to the goal from Modric was lovely.. it wasn’t just to anyone, it was to Carvajal who you mention and single out. Furthermore his overlap after playing the ball to Casemiro who popped it up to Valverde was the main reason VVD was in no man’s land. Finally, if TAA saw Vin Jr, good lord why’d he switch off? That sure of offside without even having a second peak or confronting him? Better take there is TAA isn’t a defender. He’s great going forward not backwards; Klopp again got out thought by an Italian tactician.
@danpreston5642 жыл бұрын
I think it came down to not being clinical. None of Liverpool’s chances were put where they should have been. If I remember rightly the two best chances were Mane's shot tipped onto the post and Salah's shot saved in the second half. Neither of them were close enough to the corner, especially Salah. He has a big area to put that ball into and put it in the only place where it's getting saved. If, like against City last October, he hits the side netting, Courtois is nowhere near it. After Madrid scored Liverpool hit the panic button. They lost shape and gave up space in the middle of the park that meant Madrid and Kroos were too often in a position to pick up the loose ball, play their way out of trouble and relieve the build up of pressure. At no point in the last 20 minutes did Liverpool exert real sustained pressure, penning Madrid back. It sure wasn’t pretty from Madrid, but once ahead they never really looked like giving it up.

I would evenly we need a new right back or try gomez.I mean Trent crosses well but that is it.klopp relies heavily on Trent and has given him a free role in the team.Klopp says Liverpool want to use Trents creative right foot to create chances.But of what use is that when he is always costing you goals and making you to lose big games?Even Trent did not deliver one good cross in that game and was defensively suspect throughout so of wat use is that??

In the seven finals this Liverpool team has been in they’ve only won once in 90 minutes, it needs talking about more, even as a Liverpool fan, we can speak about mentality monsters, but they become a shadow of themselves in finals.

Honestly dawg I’m a LP supporter too and I think if we just played how we always do, having Henderson cover for Trent instead of making him press high, then we just win. It was our game to lose and Real Madrid has lost their first game in 2 of the 3 knockout stage matches. I guess it just confuses me why we tried to complicate things. Liverpool is by far the better team but because they changed up strategies they played worse

Maybe their finishing needs improvement. Every final I feel like keepers stand on their heads against us it is crazy. xG over the three finals Liverpool played in this season was something in the region of 6-3 for Liverpool. So they should've scored at least two per match, winning two out of three trophies without scoring is both weird and impressive.

Appreciate the video and clarity of explanation. Didn’t spot the tactic during the game but immediately saw the danger when Modric evaded Robertson because of all the space left behind him. Wonder if he would have been better tactically fouling Modric there. Such fine margins though - the pass from Casemiro is so nearly cut out by two Liverpool players and I’m pretty sure Valverde is actually shooting rather than crossing for Vinicius (also the view of the commentators I was watching). Doesn’t matter - outcomes dictate narratives, so Real out-tacticed Liverpool with their one goal on target and are the victors 🏆

that goal reminfs me of what Michael Cox wrote in his article "How to beat Liverpool" Sept 7, 2020. There are 5 interesting points where "Play passes in behind Andy Robertson" was one of it. Tifo IRL

Appreciate the quick turnaround on the video. But just mentioning that Konate’s name is misspelled on the tactics board and mispronounced by JJ. Assume it can’t be fixed at this point but just to note for the future.

People will not be happy with this result because they already have a favorite club, style of football they want to see. With that journey, it's harsh that people still say Real Madrid is lucky. Anyways, Liverpool won the championship of getting the most shots in the final. It's not easy tbh. Let's have more competitions so more club can achieve something. It'll make everyone happy 😁

@@lexkanyima2195 I agree but look at the match in 2018 Benzema and Ronaldo were in the box and that cross from Marcelo. van Dijk, Matip and Robertson. All 3 of them tought it would go to one of them. But the ball came to Bale. This is almost exactly the same what happened against this RM. Benzema was in the box and Carvajal came from the leftside of Valverde so van Dijk tought maybe Valverde can give a pass to him but it did not. They really got confused there. TAA doesn't need to be in a different body shape, JJ, he just needs to turn and make the tackle because he knows Vini is there. He did not. Should be mentioned when talking about TAA as one of the best in the game. He's still young and has a lot to learn.

one of the key factors was many of liverpool players has cold feet in the finals, Dias was very stiff he lost the ball a lot, Keita ... well if you watch the match you know what i mean, TAA has many bad decisions, he keeps passing and passing while he could've shoot the ball, Madrid put a lot of players in the box, the best way to score in this situation is to keep give them dangerous shoot from outside the box, a ricochet might just help them find a goal or at least make Madrid defender panicing and start to open up. And lastly, Kloop didn't use his ultimate weapon in when he needs a goal, a freakin Divock Origi !

It’ll be something AA looks at - his tackling is generally good, but he is obviously vulnerable to the run behind him. I remember Brentford exploiting that. It’s not new. Until he sorts his marking skills, I can’t see him being picked for England as a RB.

Henderson being that high up the pitch just can't happen anymore honestly. His complete lack of quality in the final third is clear to see but Klopp feels obligated to play him because he covers for Trent and is the captain of the club. Really think Naby Keita could've done some good in terms of unlocking that Madrid back line with either an accurate pass, a dribble or a late run into the box. I just expect Henderson to waste quality chances at this point, his play is pretty steadily declining IMO. Now with Mane leaving in the summer I think Liverpool should look to recruit a true striker, something they haven't really had under Klopp.
