I agree entirely with this video: build your get home bag for emergencies that you might actually face rather than some sort of weird McGuyver / special forces crossover fantasy scenario.

A couple of non-tacticool items you could throw in that's made my life easier are a cheap ball cap (great keeping the sun and rain out of your eyes), a headlamp to free up your hands (especially nice when changing tires at night) and if it's summer time a cooling towel to keep the heat off your head and neck. Awesome video for a great common man pack!

It's nice to see more realistic bag setups. I was once guilty of having the absurd INCH bag. It weighed 76lbs and had not only a tent but also a hammock, axe, saw, as well as shovel, multiple water preparation methods, multiple cooking methods, multiple power options including a 60W solar panel, enough food for 3 weeks, water storage for up to 57 gallons, and a load of other ridiculous crap that made no sense. Now I have a bag that would allow me to vanish for a week and it weighs only 18lbs and takes up less than 1/3 the space. My old pack alone weighs 5.5lbs, my new one is just under 9oz. IDK what to do with my old pack now... I emptied it a long time ago and now it just sits

After multiple off duty officers were murdered and had their vehicles taken in Chicago. I changed my mind about carrying just a j frame. It’s a great backup, personally I’m not going home without a double stack 9mm. Too many robbery crews with multiple offenders. Great info though. Much more realistic.

When I was a trooper years ago we had a large raincoat that came down to your shins and was reversible. One side was bright orange with police on it and the other black with nothing on it. It was the best part of our rain gear but from the knees down you would get soaked trying to direct traffic at an accident 🥴 Glad to be retired and letting someone else do it 🫡🇺🇸

I like the water kit getting stored inside the backup bottle. I like that idea a lot. I still have doubts about not needing cordage or a pry-tool. A person probably doesn't need a whole reel, but a few feet of something is something I keep thinking I don't need, until something happens and I curse myself out for not having it. Everything else seems sensible to me; and the limitations of "California Carry" is something I have to keep in mind anyway, vis-a-vis weapons.

I used to carry the mossberg Shockwave with my pack, book of Eli style lol. I carry a suppressed 300blk piston driven sbr/"pistol with folding "brace" now..and obviously my ccw. I don't particularly have or use a bug out bag, my pack is driven towards getting to my family and or home. If im bugging out its with my truck that's dedicated to getting me and my family to our secondary location (family in the mountains).

Can absolutely echo the parachord statement. I've used parachord to wrap an uncomfortable stock for ONE gun in the half a decade that I have owned a spool of it (and I don't even have that gun anymore either, I had to sell it when unexpected car problems happened). That being said, a part I disagree with is the shotgun bit. I would say a pump shotgun is a useful thing to have in a "get home" scenario. In any kind of urban unrest situation, a simple pump shotgun would be my absolute top go to. I have found it's one of the single most misunderstood and underutilized tools you have available to you. Even if you're not laying down suppressing fire, I have found 1) military surplus shotgun shell pouches are cheap and they readily attach to a lot of things and 2) the variety of different ammo a 12ga offers is useful in a lot of scenarios where you aren't necessarily in a straight up gunfight. Something I would add is that I keep a crowbar with me always, either in the car or in the get home bag, at all times. That tool has been worth its weight in gold and I would 100% recommend it for any setup like this. Even if you don't have a need for pry tools, I have found that a crowbar is very much like a rubber mallet or a pipe wrench: the amount of scenarios it comes in useful to have makes it worth its weight in gold.

Perfect! None of this stuff was expensive too! My setup is exactly like this! I do have a few more things than what’s in this video but only because I myself have to travel a little over a hundred miles from home. Actual food is part of it but not full on meals. Grip, rip, and eat. No cooking or boiling water. Ammo….get it from the fallen if it even happens! My always on me gun is a small 25 auto or a ruger lcp with a few extra magazines. Keeping a hundred bucks in small bills in your wallet at all times covers most everything. But all of this I said is for longer distances. Great video and perfect sense. It’s funny to see the full blown war nomad setups 🤣 very cool yes but who are these people?! Are they spec op CIA dude’s?! Thank you for the realistic setup.

👍Poncho & Contractor Bags👍 as for the packable back packs you can get a decent travel bag that zips up into its self from amazon. The extra bag really helps sharing the load… I did see any Duct Tape… it’s great for poncho repairs, pulls double duty as human repair tape as well. You can also use high visibility duct tape as trail markers plus duct tape makes for a perfect fire tinder 👍

Best video I've seen for a get home bag on youtube. I was hoping to get some help in understanding a few items. I don't understand in what scenario you would need a reflective vest while other cars are still working. In this case wouldn't you just get a ride home? What's the purpose of the channel locks and pliers? Don't those just add weight and increase calorie expenditure? If you're specifically trying to get home do you think a trauma kit is a necessary item?
@BlueRidgeCritter12 күн бұрын
This was a good video. I do think that a few of the points were certainly based on your situation and environment. Which is an important point, everyone has to evaluate their environment to see what they need. I live in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, a lot of the things that would be important in the cities does not apply. And vice versa. Just like my truck gun, is a shotgun. For where I live versatility is critical, and that suits me better than an AR. But the only point I kind of think was partly right and partly needs qualification, Is the part about ham radio. It is true that most people would not find it useful, and the limitations are true. They are better for monitoring, and for those of us who are hams, We would not be expecting the police to be on the other end. We know our limitations, and we know that there are hands that will step up to the plate and act as liaisons. That's what we saw happen in NC during Helene, Just as it has happened countless times before. The same also applies for GMRS. So saying that it is pointless, is true from the standpoint that if you're expecting to raise the police, it's not going to happen for the reasons he said. But for those of us who are in that community, we know who we will be trying to reach. And there are plenty of emergency resources, like lists of frequencies, available publicly that have already been established for emcomm. Is it a panacea? No. Just another tool in the toolbox. But anyway, the other points in the video were great. My bug out bag used to be huge, then I made it get home bag that was half that size. And a number of years later, with a lot more experience, my get home bag is about 5 lb and lean and mean. Knowledge of how to use what you have is more important than having everything but the kitchen sink.

All you said is alright for you, yes. But all depends on your situation, your environment where you are. If your good with a j frame 5 shots and that's it,I wish you the best. You are a cop you know what the gangs in your city use if you can really do it with 5 shots awsome. But as far as the bag, it won't matter why color or if it's camo if someone thinks you have something they can use they will try and take it.
@freefieldtrainingАй бұрын
We win 100% of the gunfights we do not engage in. The goal is to avoid the gang bangers, not to tempt and engage with them. If you don't deal drugs or buy flashy cars and suv's you won't have to fight off four dudes armed with rifles and glocks with switches. Really what are you going to carry that would give you parity in that circumstance anyway?

I have a very similar background and agree with your minimalist getaway approach. But I seriously disagree with your 5 shot revolver idea. My observations and the totality of information on recent shooting indicate you may need more like 30-45 pistol rds. You may not like that, but it is modern reality
@freefieldtrainingАй бұрын
30-40 rounds doesn't help if you don't have time to fire them. I've seen far more successful results from people making hits on the move than from people slinging at .1 sec splits at minute of building. This isn't necessarily the ideal gun for everyone but it is far better than one I'm not carrying and far better still than a cheap unreliable larger one stolen out of a "get home" bag.
