bpyoungq, thanks for your comment. Remember, not all stealth situations require you to have your hand on your weapon. A tactical medic doing first aid on someone at times will have both hands free as he works on a patient. The point of the video is to select those hand signals your team needs, be it one-hand or two-hand signals. Plus, if a team wishes to modify any of the signals that is an option; as long as everyone is "on the same sheet of music." Be A Hard Target.

I learned much from this - so much that I even spotted a small mistake at 18:12 when you say "many hostages" but signal "many suspects". Anyway, thanks for the clip. I wish I had known that stuff when I was a kid playing cops and robbers. :)

now I have a better understanding of why training is very important when working with a team. sometimes individual team members need to "fill in the blanks" when given hand signals. team training and individual training make up the whole of the unit.

There is a reason europeans count from thumb. If you look at 16:19 and 16:24 it is easy to mistake "3" with "6", because most of the people can't hold their pinky bent by itself i.e. you'd hold it down with your thumb and that is a "6" then. It is just to avoid confusion.

Pretty good stuff. I remember a lot of these from basic training. Sadly, in a real fire fight, we rarely ever used hand signals. C-Co 1/75 2BCT 101 ABN Div.

excellent videos jim, i learned a lot just for curiosity's sake. one thing i don't understand though. so many of these hand signals require you to take your hands off of your firearm. this may be a moot point with a pistol, but it seems that you have to temporarily disarm yourself to communicate many of these signals if you're using a rifle. how do you overcome or compensate for that?

When he says to indicate many hostages, he grabbed his arm and then threw his fingers In the air, his hands pointed up. Doesn't grabbing the wrist indicate suspect, not hostage? I thought grabbing your own throat meant victim or hostage.

>symbol for many guys, at the top of the stairs, with long knives and shields >giant exaggerated shrugs all around anyway a lot of these are pretty logical, but it's good to know that the sign for them is logical so you don't need to overthink your signage too much

For one-handed number signals, you should take a look at American Sign Language (ASL). Due to the similarity between the "3" and "6" Jim shows in this video (especially when someone is wearing gloves or signing quickly), in ASL a "3" uses the thumb, index and middle fingers (a European- or German-style "3") while a #6 uses the index, middle, and ring fingers (same as shown in this video). In ASL, 1 still begins with the pointer finger, so it's only the "3" that switches to European style. This removes all ambiguity from signing "3" and "6." Given the life-or-death situations that SWAT/CT units encounter, a miscommunication between someone signing "6 armed men" and it being understood as "3 armed men" could lead to disaster... So know and use the ASL sign for "3!" Additionally, for a "10" ASL uses the thumbs up rocking back and forth, which is quicker than signing a "1" and then a "0" and arguably easier to understand. I'm not sure if this rocking thumb sign is used for anything else in the tactical world, but I didn't see it in this video. ASL's "15" could be confused with "come here" but only if you're communicating with someone who hasn't learned the numbers.

MrABums4, true. If you need a gas mask you will put it on. However, when soldiers or a SWAT team is wearing full gear, especially a balaclava over the face, at a distance you may not be able to make out if a gas mask is being worn or not. Thus you have the hand single for GAS! which is the arms out horizontal with the forearms going vertical and diagonal again. There is always a good reason why militaries have certain hand signals. Be A Hard Target.

I thought the THS for hostage was a throat grab??? And to indicate a suspect is a closed fist and grab your wrist with the opposite hand, but his hand was opened as he grabbed his wrist. (could that also mean hostage?) Just when I thought I had it down pat...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dude kept getting mixed up over hand signals. For instance he kept grabbing wrist which Is assailant and referred to it as hostage which is hand around the throat. Also handgun is what he was doing with arm bent in front of you and clicking the thumb like the hammer. The rifle simply is extend your arm straight by your side pointing at the ground doing the hammer drop with your thumb. The shotgun is simply doing a pump racking motion right above your left shoulder. Another thing that I guess the police uses both hands to give hand signals. Using only one hand leaves the other in fire control, which I wouldn't give up if I was danger close as to be using hand signals. He was saying to make big wide excessive gestures which takes the cool out of tacticool. If your in a situation where that you are having to use hand signals your more than likely close enough to the enemy that you don't need to be flailing around like a wounded bird. If you're running point have your guys pay attention to your left hand (assuming that you shoot off your right shoulder) any of the signs that he was demonstrating can be giving with one hand without usually having to turn towards your guys. Half of what he was demonstrating looked as if he was making it up as he was going along. Some may have been sign language which I cannot speak but none the less unnecessary. Keep commands simple and give your guys enough credit and respect to assume that they can figure out what's going on (hopefully you're not leading a bunch of idiots into a situation where innocent lives could be at stake. I don't think that now or in the future that I will be having to use most of the hand signals maybe neither will you unless I'm trying to impress the kids at the playground with the rally on me lasso hand signal or the go over the monkey bars or bring me a beer lol.

Simple solution to these misunderstandings: stay home in your own country! If every American had spent as much time honestly learning who really did 9/11 as they're spending here learning hand signals, we would never have gone to Iraq.
