The "stiffness" that's encountered in many AK safety levers is easily adjusted and fixed by carefully bending the safety lever out away from the receiver. This obviously reduces friction against the receiver and can be used to completely remove any "stiffness".

You should re-do this in a more modern take larry! i'd love to see this type of stuff except with more high tech equipment and cameras and details about what type of scenarios you'v experienced around the world when you were in the Unit(engaging multiple targets while being fired upon) or some other crazy stories. This is a great video! it always amazes me how fast you can maneuver and accurately put rounds on targets(especially while on the move!!). You are a legend larry thank you SO MUCH for the content!

When the G36 was introduced in 97, it was pretty advanced but by 2008, the time this episode came out, the G36 has already undergone updates like a flat top rail for different optics and an adjustable stock as well as rail options on the handguard for accessories. A lot of the early advantages of the G36 has already been implemented in other platforms such as the age old AR-15 series.

I must protest. The M16 was submitted with chrome plated chamber and barrel as well as the bolt carrier group. It was the DOD that decided to drop this due to cost savings. Only after the resulting failures in Vietnam did the DOD change the requirement. The USAF adopted the rifle as originally submitted. These early rifles all had plating as noted.

jlscjwtwich And don't forget they also told troopers it was so futuristic it didn't need to be cleaned AND switched powders in the cartridges from stick to ball powdered propellant which burned dirty and less robustly than the stick powder, adding to the the guns early and very deadly unreliability. Guess why they made the powder change? If you said it was cheaper and they had a bunch left over to use, you got it.

I would have picked an MP5 if I was there. It's short and handle, so I can easily get out of a vehicle in a hurry and a 9mm hollow point can actually penetrate a car door. It can go through 2. This is also the 80s where the odds of running into a criminal wearing body armor is pretty low since there has been no incident in the 80s of this happening. I don't know how Aaron claims 9mm can't penetrate car doors. It can. Only limit is range.

I would just put my Glock 19 into a CAA Micro Conversion Kit slap in a 33 rd mag of speer gold dots and drop on my QD Red Dot. Pretty much all you need, but in 9mm PCC so dont expect to take shots like a sniper but for assaulting a position or reinforcing a position at medium ranges you can do pretty much what you need to do. I have even heard of LEO agencies starting to test the platform......

That's more of an emergency thing to increase the potential use of a sidearm. Really that's what it was designed for, not as a go to gun, but more of a quick upgrade to the only gun you can carry. Like say if you were a cop on bike patrol or ride a motorcycle and can't fit a bigger gun anywhere.

Also, incorrect. I don't know how this guy doesn't know that most handgun caliber can penetrate through several car doors actually. An MP5 would be ideal in close quarters fighting but only draw back would be unable to defeat body armor, which not a lot of criminals of the 80s would use. It wouldn't be until the famous 97 North Hollywood bank robbery where handgun caliber isn't the best choice vs criminals with body armor. If anything, an MP5 is lighter and more handier than my previous choice of the M933 but only in close quarters. For me, if the suspects were running, a rifle caliber would be better to equal the rifle they were using
@user-dv8ge8hf1o
@user-dv8ge8hf1o 8 жыл бұрын
One of the "Perps" used a Mini-14 to kill two of the cops and wound many others. A rifle is easier to shoot due to its longer sight radius. A moot point now with red dot sights but something to consider in the 80's. Most police departments are going to rifles. You'd be amazed by how many people survive getting shot by a handgun caliber. Shotguns disassemble people. Rifles put them down for good. I would't go with shotgun due to the low round count. If I'm going into a fight I want a rifle!
@user-dv8ge8hf1o
@user-dv8ge8hf1o 8 жыл бұрын
Most people still believe that all you have to do is point one down a hallway and vaporize everything. You must aim a shotgun and know were it shoots at different ranges. Most shotguns have poor sights which hinders getting good hits. The heavy recoil of a shotgun means most people won't train with one. Don't get me wrong its a viable weapon but I'll stick with my ARs and AKs.

In history, the Japanese military was VERY disinterested in making submachine guns. They were held back on their idea that their current level of weapons could best any foe and only slowly introduced SMGs late in the war. China during WWI-WWII had such a beat down from Japan and internal problems, that it was not able to design any of its own weapons at all and had to copy other designs or just buy them from outside the country.

Pre North Hollywood, there have been almost no instances of bad guys using body armor, so it would have been appropriate to use an MP5 or other SMGs. They are better than a handgun because they give you the stability of a rifle with a stock but controllable because of the smaller caliber. 9mm can go through most car doors, so that's not a problem and pretty much all law enforcement shoot any gun in semi auto only to avoid collateral damage.

For the FBI shootout, if I were an agent at the time and had my choice of whatever I want given the situation, I would have used a short barreled AR-15 with the 10.5 in barrel which was available to military and LEO at the time. Most likely given the knowledge of gun guys of the era, knowing about the early red dots would have only been exclusive know how of people who really study that sort of thing and I would only be shooting with the iron sights. The Colt M933 would have been an excellent choice. Lightweight and handy getting in and out of cars and can give you longer range power than an MP5

Excalibur01 you wouldn't have chosen that rifle back then. They still had their bad reputation from Vietnam. It wasn't until the late 90's until they overcame that stigma on a large scale, and even today people say the Ar15 isn't reliable.
@JustSumGuy01
@JustSumGuy01 8 жыл бұрын
This is the 80s, where the AR platform's early problems in 'Nam were largely corrected. In fact, by the end of the Vietnam War, most troops have reported none of the malfunctions encountered with the early models. Only to people who don't know about it, think it sucks. By the early 80s, the early type M16 design was replaced with the A2 model, further improving on the design. If you know about the quirks, and study it, it's a good weapon to use.
@CoGhostRider

You seem to be forgetting the brief periods of idiocy in military history. For example the battle rifle, its a development on the STG and thus a development on the "assault rifle", yet it doesn't follow the idea of "designed to engage targets from an arms length onwards. Thus they didn't always have the goal of developing for that role from the STG onwards. Indeed I could argue that is why the MP5 existed at all - with the FAL and G3 battle rifles there was still a need for lightweight close in weapons systems. With the M416 there isn't, and with that the submachine gun is going away to a niche role. You could also make the argument of body armour making a difference, but I'd say that a reliable AR with a sub 10 inch barrel is more the factor here, as small and light as a submachine gun there really isn't much of a reason to carry one regardless of body armour. That and the Russians, Belgians, and Germans have defeated body armour using submachineguns, the Belgians and Germans with the PDW concept P90 type and the Russians using 9mm rounds along with hardened penetrators with anything from the Western 9mm Luger through to 9x18 and 19x21. The main point being whilst the Nazis had done the research and knew focusing on mid range combat and high firepower was ideal, and Russians had seen first had that the Nazis were correct and followed that mentality, the Americans clung to the old WW1 idea that a soldier needs to be able to engage targets out to 2000m and forced the rest of NATO to adopt the 7.62x51 round. When this turned out to be terrible they swung too far the other way with the 5.56x45 which turned out to be too small. The rest of NATO seemed more content with a calibre in between the two, and were pushing for such a round from the start. 70 years ago they were correct, but today technology has almost made the 5.56 fit for combat in longer barrelled rifles about 18-20 inches (not the M4) through the ideas of terminal instability and by pretending the round isn't designed to fragment and break international treaties, whilst every shot fired will. With this the 5.56 will about good enough for combat, though when fighting a military with body armour one may wish again to step up to the intermediate cartridges around 0.280 British caliber proposed 60 years ago, or the near-identical 6.8 Remington SPC repeatedly suggested today. And ultimately the focus has never been on the ability to engage targets at a short range until the first Iraq War showed a need. The M16 was able to be adopted for short range, the cartridge used was incapable of anything but short range, but until that war the military was still too focused on its mid-long range combat. There they were shown the focus on urban combat and looked at equipping the M4 as standard. So it took a good 40+ years of war everywhere around the world until the American military had finally accepted that the focus should be on, as you said, combat from an arms length onwards... 'murica.

A semi auto rifle with only one mode of fire is not an "assault rifle". It's a civillian rifle based on the "assault" or, more accurately, "military" version. If thats what you are using please note that or note the difference if your going to use those terms for historical or entertainment purposes. The gun cultures of the world need to share a common narative and not inadvertently give our legal adversaries false ammunition against us let alone more misinformation to the public.
