Before you buy new fishing rods check out this video! What are you really getting for your money? Are all of these different rods worth it or are some a better value? Matt explains his 4 favorite rod lines (from cheap to expensive) and what sets each one apart.
When choosing the best rod lines to invest your money Matt used the follow criteria... How sensitive are the rods? How consistent is the entire line? Do they make enough models to cover the average angler's needs? Is this the best all-around rod in its class?
Dobyns Colt Series: bit.ly/2lU0LfV
The Colt is a great line of rods in the $80 price range. They cover all of your basic techniques with fairly slow actions that will help you land fish. Quality is excellent for the price and best of all, they seem to be consistent.
Standout Models...
7' Medium spinning- All around finesse
7' Medium Heavy Crankbait - lipless and deep cranks
7' Heavy- jigs, Texas rigs, small swimbaits
Dobyns Fury Series: bit.ly/2bGvlVV
The Fury line covers everything from finesse to giant swimbaits. Its a true "do everything" line of rods and you can do if for $120 a piece. These are fantastic rods for the price which some great models to choose from.
StandOut Models...
-7' Medium Spinning - Finesse Fishing
-7' Medium heavy - all around
-7'3" Extra Heavy - Frogging
8' Heavy Big Swimbaits and Glidebaits
Shimano Expride: bit.ly/2nTq9FL
The Expride is currently our favorite rod line on the market. They're incredibly light and sensitive and perform along side rods that cost nearly twice their price. At $279, these rods are amazing!
Standout Models...
7' Light + Spinning Dropshot, Ned Rig, Tubes
7'2" Medium Heavy All Around topwater, Texas rigs, reaction
7'3" Extra Heavy Frog fishing
7'11" Extra Heavy Best Flipping Stick On The Market (at any price)
G Loomis NRX: bit.ly/2hedqsq
The NRX is the industry standard for sensitivity and ultra light performance. These rods are second to none and offer a variety of amazing models. If you're looking for high-end performance that you can rely on year after year, the NRX is for you!
Stand Out Models...
802S JWR: Light Dropshot and Ned Rig
852C JWR: Shaky Head, small keitech, worms, finesse
-853C JWR: Light Jigs, Texas Rigs
-894C JWR: Heavy Jigs, Texas Rigs, Jig Head Swimbaits, big spinnerbaits
Matching Reels...
-Casitas 150: bit.ly/2geKxsp
-Curado 200K: bit.ly/2tHewEh
-Chronarch MGL: bit.ly/2n8DghB
-Metanium MGL: bit.ly/2ezIBfB

Never lose sight of the most important thing to have in your Arsenal. The passion for fishing. It transcend's all price points. Thanks TB for the great information learned through experience. I would love to throw some of the more expensive rods that you have named. But they just aren't in my budget. I've fished Fitzgerald rods for a while now and feel they have a well-rounded lineup. Thanks be safe and enjoy your weekend.

I tend to spend $100-150 on a rod and casting reel, which I find to be the sweet spot. My most expensive rod is a St. Croix Avid X 6'9" ML/XF spinning rod I use for finesse. My cheapest rod is a Cabela's whuppin' stick. I tend to go for a St. Croix Mojo Bass or Daiwa Tatulas typically, which are really nice and sometimes I can find them well below retail which makes them a complete steal, and for reels the Tatula CT, Tatula SV, Curado K and Pflueger Supreme XT are all solid choices (I actually like the cheaper and lesser known Pflueger Supreme XT better than the Shimano Curado K to be honest, it's a great reel that most bass anglers don't know about). For spinning reels, I can get away with spending a lot less and get a good reel that will last a long time. The Daiwa BG is easily on par with reels costing over twice the price, will last longer but it's a little bit heavier, which doesn't even bother me. If I'm on a budget, the Daiwa RG and Pflueger President are excellent. I could drop a bit more on $500+ G Loomis rods, it may be nice but at the end of the day it's not going to make me a better angler. If you have the money, go for it but there's a few actions missing from my lineup, which would be money better spent imo.

I personally fish the fury line of rods. I love them all. I have bought several "refurbished" rods off of Dobyns website and have yet to get one that looks "used", if price is an issue that's a good option. I recently purchased a colt cbr that fishes just like the fury version except a tad lighter.

I gotta say I get super tired of videos and forum threads where someone asks about a particular rod in a particular price range and they get flooded with suggestions way above their budget. This video was a nice change of pace... you make those recommendations but then explain WHY spending into the next bracket is worthwhile. Well done lads. I have to admit, I have different recommendations in the lower price ranges but I respect that you took the time to make a case and defend your choice. Cheers.

LMAO....one of my biggest pet peeves! MOST of the time its just guys wanting to brag what they use too! Post: "Im looking for a good reel under $100" Cool Reply Guy: "Buy the Curado. Its worth the extra 80 dollars and its all that I use." They should make it LAW....if you suggest over budget, you must send the OPs the money for difference between your recommendation and their budget! People act like money grows on trees....a budget is a budget! lol

Just for a little confidence if you on the edge about the colt, I was bank fishing for smallmouth and I lost my balance and stepped right on the colt. The rod was bridged across two rocks about 2 feet away and I stepped right on the backbone that had no support. It didn't break and I still use it today.

@@CassidyOG Matt is right, dude. Nobody is saying you can’t get a rod that can function and pull fish in for under $100, but you’re not going to get the kind of sensitivity that you need to be competitive or fish at a really high level. If you’re just a weekend guy who throws crank baits, get whatever rod you want...but when money is on the line and you’re throwing something on semi slack line or a bottom contact presentation, a rod under $100 won’t cut it.
@alexdowns4783

At the end of the day a top dollar rod is absolutely not necessary. U can get the same results out of a budget rod. However a high end rod you can 100% feel the difference in quality and performance when fishing it’s just up to you to decide if you wanna pay extra for the features they bring in but it’s not necessary unless ur fishing tournaments for big money

Been a devout bass angler since age 7, in 1969. I fish today here in Florida now, more than ever. I've used all the upper-mid shelf to top shelf reels & brands, and many of the lower mid-shelf rods. Today, I'm completely sold on Lew's baitcaster reels and rods. I've got 10 of their reels ( 6 Pro-G's, 2 Super Duty's, and 2 BB1 Pro's ) and 10 of their TP1 Speed Sticks ( started with 4.....loved em so much, I got 6 more ) with IM8 blanks, Wynn split grip handles & the special Micro-Wave guides by American Tackle. All my rods are various lengths & actions, and I truly feel they are the best $100 rod on the market. It has now been over 2 years of fishing hard, multiple times every week ( weather permitting ), year round........and I have yet to break one of these TP1's.....not even a line guide. They are the lightest rod I've held in that price range, and good sensitivity too. I know tons of other anglers love em as well. But last year, I had picked up another reel, an old classic, just for kicks, and was in a rush for another rod, so I hit Walmart & got a $50/$60 Berkley Lightning rod. Right away, the older classic reel wouldn't balance at all on the Lightning rod, so I had to switch to one of my newer Lew's reels. Yet the old classic reel DID balance ok on my Speed Stick that I had swapped out with. On the first day fishing that Lightning rod, my hand started cramping, and got a blister from the FUJI trigger. As soon as I picked up one of my Speed Sticks, my hand felt so much more comfortable, right away. I know a lot of guys like the Lightning rods, and I did use it for 2 months & caught quite a few bass on it.....but then, IT HAPPENED: I hooked into what looked like a 10 lb bass ( I've caught many double digit bass ) on the Stick Marsh reservoir, and got her boatside. She made another hard run directly under the boat, and I did have plenty of line off the rod tip, because I know better. That damned Lightning rod snapped completely in half ( using mono line ), sounded like a rifle shot, and cut my line at the same time. Boy was I pissed........LOL. Lost that big fish and my lure. I won't be buying anymore Lightning rods, and sticking with my $100 Lew's TP1 Speed Sticks. Sure, there's "better rods" on the market, but you WILL be paying at least twice as much or more for them. Just "my 2 cents".........to each his own.

I'm going to buy a Fury this week. After reading the comments I realized that I've caught the most fish (up to 3 lb bass) on a $5.00 Diawa Ultralite glass rod and a $30.00 Quick 100 that I bought as a kid in the early 1970s. Still have the combo. Thinking about re-spooling and and digging out the old 4" Rebels. Fishing was more fun before it became technical.

I haven't really been able to fish in about 15 years due to a progressive illness, but my friends considered me a pretty good fisherman. I had one rod that was in the 100 dollar range, the rest were much less. Berkley lightning rods, Diawa Heartlland, Shimano Convergence, and others. I wasn't making a living off of fishing, it was a passion, and I didn't need to spend tons of money to fulfill that passion. Most people fishing can't afford to drop a grand on 5 rods? and if you're just eager to go fish? probably no need to?

Yep. I just took and old $17 dollar spinning rod (I have $300+ combos) to have it repaired for $12.50. I like the rod. The rod builder/ repairman said fish aren't concerned with the price of your rods. Sensitivity matters in some techniques and durability certainly matters as well, but most of my big fish were caught on cheap spinning equipment. It ls done every day. Try to break an ugly stik... they've caught millions of fish!

This idea that you have to spend $150-$500 to get a decent rod is ridiculous all just guys wanting to be able to talk about their rods I operate a rv park and fish camp directly on mosquito lagoon in Florida a harsh inshore saltwater environment ive been fishing berkleylightening rods and on the even less expensive berkley cherrywood with shimano sienna or sierras spinning reels(I’m not really up to date on baitcasting reels but I’m betting $75 will get a decent one if your not a slave to talking about your awesome reel)I rinse them when done they last 2 years being fished hard and a about $85 to $100 for rod and reel if you break one it’s replaceable at your door in 2 days from Amazon there is no rod worth $500 unless your offshore for marlin maybe and for the haters I grew up bass fishing and understand rod sensitivity and spooled with any decent braid a bite on a lightning rod is easily detectable if you can’t feel it a $500 rod isn’t going to fix it All that being said if you love the super expensive equipment that’s great but let’s not pretend you can’t have a productive day on the water if you don’t break the bank on a rod

The lower end of rods that you started with sounds good. I would never spend 500-600$ on a single rod! Hell,I doubt I'd spend 200$ on a rod either. No matter how good such a rod is,the value is just not there for me,to spend that much. Serious bass fishing for a living, isn't what I do either tho. I do mostly bait finesse fishing. Ultralight lures, with bait casting gear, and light spools to handle the light lures,on UL,L,and ML rods. I would consider spending serious money on the reel, more than a rod. I have a tatula ct in my collection, which I could use for regular bass sized lures,It has a aftermarket finesse spool in it atm. I would just need to get a decent medium rod,and put the original spool back in,with heavier line. I hate using heavy rods,as I have lost strength in my wrists due to my 10 years of dealing with cancer treatments. I do love to catch bass on my lighter gear, and throw some homemade lures with decent results sometimes. I love catching smaller fish as well.

sgtpavlov BFS is the way to go, my setup is quite expensive but BFS is just an awesome way of fishing. 6lb fluoro and a super shallow spool, 75 meters of line. The reel is an REVO LTX - BF8 by Abu Garcia, and the rod is a Fantasista MGS 64L, whole setup is 219 grams, lighter than many bait casting reels alone. However you’re looking at $700 for the whole setup.

I have been using G. Loomis GLX and IMX for ten plus years now. Just buy one every year and the collection just gets bigger and bigger. I think a lot of people think they have a sensitive rod until they fish with a GLX, then it all becomes clear. It just takes time to build up the arsenal.

I remember IM 6 graphite being considered a good sensitive rod, now they are making them so sensitive that you can feel the fish breathe on the bait. I've caught walleye with IM 6 graphite Berkley Gary Roach rods years ago and they worked good. I think they were about $40-$60 bucks. I have one left. I even have a Fenwick boron rod that is pretty sensitive and crisp. I mainly fish GLoomis, Falcon, Fenwick and All Star. Good video.

Got the Expride Spinning 7' Med. And WOW! The rod is drop dead gorgeous in looks and feel. That patterning with the X wraps is sexy stuff. Super light (107g) tons of backbone and the tip is perfect for twitching most baits. Very comfortable. Thanks for the spot on recommendation, Matt. I also have the Dobyns Sierra 734C and it's very similar but a little less sensitive and a tad stiffer than the Expride 702. Great that you did this video and explained the choices according to increasing performance for the dollar. Happy Casting!

Everyone commenting about cheap, $30 rods. You get what you pay for, I went from fishing those rods when I first got into bass fishing and working my way up and notice a huge difference in every aspect of the rods. When you're talking about serious fishing and fishing bottom baits when the fishing is slow, a higher dollar rod for finesse and what not is extremely important. From experience I would never take an under $80 rod ever again with the amount of fish missed, lost and what not from crap rods not being able to pin fish properly or not being able to feel light bites and what not. Sure a cheap rod and reel combo is always "efficient" for beginners, but high end rods are worth it in most cases. The new Dobyns Xtasy rod for example, I could feel every single change in the bottom while running a texas rig worm off a drop off, and the fish were being picky and could easily tell when they bumped it or took a nip at it, compared to a much cheaper same action rod. Setting the hook was much more efficient and the short strikes or quick lipping were producing fish.

Everyone on their "buy an ugly stick" rant, if you fish as much as these guys do its not gonna cut it. This is truly a get what you pay for scenario. A low end fishing rod is going to be almost twice as heavy and nearly half as sensitive. Theres a divide here, if you only fish occasionally sure get and ugly stick and be done with it. If you spend tons of time on the water your investments will be justified by comfort, all day fishability, increased sensistivity, and sheer enjoyment .

The shimano has a little stronger feeling handle but that lews blows it out of the water. I would compare it like this. Shimano and diawa are like BMW AND MERCEDES. I know its not necessary to spend so much on a rod(280ish). but to be honest it makes the hobby more fun FOR ME. not the spending money but having equipment for specific setups. it also helps you stay fishing instead of having to stop and change your set up. I simply just grab another fishing rod and keep fishing. im not rich but i can save and buy a 300 dollar rod, just like i bought a 400 dollar ps4, or a 12k motorcycle. its whatever , people are to quick to judge online, use your money how you want.

I've been using Dobyns Fury rods for a couple seasons now. I have 3 of them. My favorite one being the 735C which I use for a ton of different things. It's a great frog rod, jig rod, I even use it for when I'm power fishing with moving baits w/ braided line. I've used it to catch big Northern Pike too. I'm not gonna say my experience with the Fury rods has been without issue. I've had two of them break about 8 inches from the tip on two separate occasions. They weren't closed in a car door. They weren't stepped on or slammed against the gunwale of my boat repeatedly. Both broke while casting a 3/4oz jig, funny enough. Now with a lower end rod like the Furys, you're not going to get a free replacement because it'd cost Dobyns way too much money...so you end up paying like $70 for a rod replacement, regardless if it's your fault or not. It's not a bad policy because you're not going to find a rod on the market for the cost of the replacement fee that'll beat a Dobyns Fury. I haven't tried their Colt series yet. I'm mainly using Dobyns and Duckett right now. Most of the rods on my deck are Furys, Sierras or Ducketts Micro Magics. I've got some falcons too.

Will Price would like to start by saying cool videos on your channel brother, watched a couple. With that being said, im going to have to disagree with you. There isnt a rod shimano makes that comes anywhere close to the nrx. EXCEPT the new Conquest, WHICH they partnered with gloomis and they are using nrx tech with shimanos spiral x tech, which is still technically a gloomis rod. Other than that they dont come close. Now im not saying they dont have good rods, but they arent a nrx. When it comes to price point. I think its their prerogative to charge what they do for the simple fact it is way better than the other rods in its class. It is lighter, and more sensitive, and insanely strong. Why would they charge the same as rods that arent as good. There are luxury items in every passion or hobby brother. Of course you dont need a bently to drive to work, just like you dont need a nrx to catch a biggin. But dont down play something because the price point isnt right for you. Now, have you fished with an nrx? And if you have, this is the conclusion you honestly came to? If so, perhaps shimano has rods i havent seen or fished yet, and who are the companies that can make these custom rods that are going to outcompete the nrx at its price point or less. I would love to look into it, always looking for new set ups.

Hey Matt or Tim, I bought a $60 rod from Tackle Warehouse a couple of years ago. It’s a 7’3”, 13 crankbait rod. I thought, what the hell, why not, really nothing to lose. There were a few bad reviews, and a few really good reviews. Typically, I’d spend no less than $150 for a rod. Fast forward to present. I know own 6 of these Black Omen 13 rods in various lengths and styles. I just can’t believe how well they fish! For me. I can definitely afford $100-$300 rods. And, have had some beauties! That said, for some reason, whenever I go fishing, these are the rods I take. It’s hard for me to rap my mind around it, being a fairly advanced bass fisherman... fishing with $60 rods. Seems almost counter productive but for some odd reason, I have a ton of confidence in these sticks. They’re not the lightest, most sensitive rods by any means. They just flat out get the job done. Never broken one, no issues over the last 2 years of fishing em. I’m a pretty good sized dude at 6’4, 265lbs. That may have something to do with it, not sure. But hey, talk about bang for your buck, my poor Saint Croixs haven’t seen any action for years 🏄🏼‍♂️🎣

Yes and no in my experience. Granted you CAN catch fish on any rod for the few higher end combos I've fished you really do gain a bit of sensitivity and they just are plain lighter without giving up strength. Most of the people who don't believe in the difference either A. Have never really fished them side by side or B. aren't doing things like fishing ned rigs in 40' feet of water during the winter. I noticed the difference right away fishing weightless senkos on two different combos ( one a decent combo put together from Walmart and what was at the time G-Loomis's high end rod with a high end Diawa. Spongy bites became fairly distinct "ticks" on the line and I was putting them out further which definitely helps anyone on shore.

Love this type of information. I have seen hundreds of videos on how to fish finesse and top water. Everyone always explains how we want the tackle to behave and how to make it behave in that manner. However there is not much out there going through the motions and focusing specifically on what the hands and the rod are doing to get that behavior. I believe many subscribers would benefit from such videos. Thank you for all you do!

I know it is only $20 more. but is it worth the $20 more? Is it a better rod than the Dobyns? Any input from anyone would be appreciated. I am driving myself nuts trying to decide what "better" rod to get.

Or some of us have other hobbies too. Like hunting bear, deer, pigs, pheasant, duck, geese, elk, coyotes. I struggle to check off 2-3 of those hunts a year let alone spend $100 on just the fishing rod. And that doesnt count camping, gaming, trail riding with my jeep....when I'm not spending money fixing my jeep. I just bought an $80 ice fishing rod and feel guilty as hell about that ffs.

DaOzMan no worries my friend. Most tackle is designed to catch fisherman than fish. Find the tackle within your budget and you will do fine. If you're not a great fisherman yet, checkout more of these videos and ask your local bait shops what's going on in your area and what folks are using for bait. I never use live bait, yet baitshops will brag about how good live bait is. See what color the live bait is, and use a similar artificial if you like. Color is critical, as well as depth vs time of day or if overcast.

Good information, I’m glad I stepped up my rod game. Started with $20-$30 rods from major retailers made by major companies that were just junk. The least expensive rods when I started getting quality was around $70-$110, 13 Fishing, Dobyns Fury. I’ve recently stepped up to G.Loomis and Shimano and boy can you tell a difference. Less missed bites/fish when you rely on “bites on the fall” you need to feel those bites or you could be fishless, no telling how many fish I didn’t even know I may have had before, and also the confidence when setting the hook and pinning the fish down all the way to the bank/boat. I have a question also, I’m thinking about moving up to 8’ft rods for longer casts, search bait rods, any recommendations for 8’ft lipless crank, swim jig, swim bait rods anywhere from 1/2oz-1-1/2oz lures? Currently in love with the Curado and e6x rod so something similar under $200/rod?

I’m referring to the “thump” or “tick” so to speak. I’ve noticed an all around difference from my first Angler combo from Academy. The better quality rods seem to have better sensitivity, in my opinion. I can feel the tick on slack line now as before I couldn’t. Of course where I’m at now vs where I started I could probably pick up a cheap combo with some cheap 10-12 mono and probably do ok, but my best friend has recently got into bass fishing and he loves throwing my setups vs his lesser expensive combos he has, he says what I said, that he can feel a huge difference. Just my opinion and his as well though, everyone’s different. I will say though my Shimano Curado rod is by far the best medium/heavy rod for the money that I’ve come across as far as sensitivity and confidence in landing the fish. Of course lure and line play a big factor in that as well, fluorocarbon is on most of my setups vs mono and I only use braid for top water now since I don’t really punch that often down in Texas, just casting and occasional flippin’.
@Jack-uj2vx
@Jack-uj2vx 6 жыл бұрын
@@jamesrdallas04 I can agree. I was thinking more about short casts too vs airing it out. When I'm casting over, say 20 or 30ft I guess that the thump is more important. I hung one about 2 weeks ago on the drop on a cast where I was actually just straightening out the line so I do get what you mean. Course, I cut my teeth on ugly stix, when a custom rod might run you a buck fifty for the best one on the planet. Today's cheap rods are where some of those were 30 years ago. And don't get me started on line lol. People who have only been fishing for the last 10 or 15 years don't know how good they have it. I truly wonder how good some of the old timers would be on today's equipment. They were using the equivalent of dowel rods back in the 70s 😂. Black max reels would be comfort unimagined back then. My partner is in his 60s, and he shakes his head when I show up with a new 175$ rig. He splurges and spends 60 once in a while..... and outfishes me 5 out of 6 trips. And never throws anything but a tequila sunrise power worm. I hate em..... Edit: but I whoop his a$$ chasing flatheads 😉

Yea, we have it easy today for sure! I remember fishing when I was a kid at catfish farms with my dad and going crappie fishing on the lake a few times and I may have caught a bass or been around when someone else did, I’m more competitive now, I use mono now on crank baits or light wire hook Texas rigs or on a Carolina rig leader, and you can definitely feel the stretch it has. It’s all in the technique I’ve come to figure out, if it moves like food than it must be food, you could probably catch a largemouth on a baby ruth hanging from a 7/0 drop shot rig. It’s all technique. I just like knowing that when I set the hook it’ll be in my hands soon after! I did miss a fish on mono yesterday, I set the hook and had him half way to the bank and he got off. If that’d been fluorocarbon I wouldn’t have lost him, if it would have been braid I definitely would have had him, if he would’ve even bit that is. Braid makes the most awful noise going in/out of the guides and it tears up the guide eyelets really quick. Not a huge fan of braid. I have a couple $70 rods that I love, ones an H2O Express carbon medium heavy 7’0 rod and the other is a 13 Fishing Fate Chrome 7’4 heavy rod and that’s about the lowest I’ll go, reels don’t matter unless you just want to cover more water, I have two curados and concept z that will cast for days compared to my original angler, pro max 2, and pro max 3. Equipment definitely makes a difference. I’ve had 3 Walmart rods break and one tip snapped plum off and an academy rod snap and another one an eyelet fell out. Started adding up so I just save and buy better stuff as I can now.

The next day I went and purchased my very own NRX. It feels soo nice and I do not regret buying it at all. The lightness and sensitivity was well worth it for me plus the Loomis warranty is amazing!
