Sim Racing 101 : Brakes Are (NOT) For Stopping (Ep8)

This is an extremely underrated video. Back in 2015 I saw this for the first time trying to understand how to suck less at Assetto Corsa, and the lightbulb moment of someone saying that the brakes move the weight of the car set in motion my path to being actually pretty decent! Came back to send this video to others who were asking my advice and I hope it's as helpful to them as it was for me. Might be a simple lesson, but understanding this means you'll understand almost everything about driving fast.

Took the advice from this vid, used it and it helped me so much. I never thought of the wheels needing to be balanced through the corner for max corner speed. I've always concentrated on loading the front by trail braking a lot so I could make the turn. This would usually help me be able to get on the power faster, but my mid corner speed was so slow. I had been running the Star Mazda in Iracing at Okayama this week trying to just learn the car so I could move up to that series. Best I could manage was a 1:29.6. After using this advice, braking before the corner and letting the car just be balanced through the corner for max speed helped me increase to a best time of 1:28.0. ANyways, thanks for the videos. Really enjoying them.

Thanks man, I was getting frustrated after getting my first actual wheel and pedal set in the mail today, driving horribly and having to drop the AI down a whole 10 percent. After watching this though I was able to knock a good 2-3 seconds off of my time at Mid Ohio in a '87 M3 touring car in Race 07. I also finally felt fast without also feeling out of control and feeling like I have constant under steer.

I always struggle with this, I understand the physics behind it, but in driving situations, I can never get the right amount of braking into the corner to take the fastest possible line/speed through the corner, and I always run around 11th or 12th, I feel like with this mastered I could run much faster, the video was really helpful.

Im not that fast in the Elise. Here's a tip though, turn all the graphics down, max out framerate. BOOM, instantly faster. That bug in the TP completely eliminates lap times mattering. Hope it's fixed for release.

You can use trailing throttle with your right foot, its just like blipping but keeping your foot in that position. It's awkward, but can be done.

You should've taken turn 8 (Toe) at Watkins Glen (Boot) as an example of Throttle-Brake controlling. Just such a beast-feeling when you get it right.

I have been trying to trail brake but it's really difficult to get the pressure just right. Sometimes I add too much pressure or press on it too early and the car turns in before the apex and then I have to make corrections. Other times it's not enough and the car understeers off the track. It is a great feeling though when you get it just right and the car pivots around the corner hitting the apex perfectly. But for me it's more of a matter of chance that I got it all right than being precise!

Stay at it, your left leg will eventually get sensitized to applying precise pressure as well. It took me a good while to learn to left foot brake too. In the beginning my left food too used to stamping on the clutch was only capable of doing on/off. What probably helped me as I first learnt it on a road car so the g-forces help you out at balancing the pressure. On a sim you don't have g-forces so initially its more of a guess work as to how much pressure you need to apply...

Hey I wanted to say thanks for this video as it finally woke me up to what I already knew. My lap times have gone down a little but my feeling of being on edge is gone now that I use brakes and throttle to keep my car balanced through turns. The weird thing is that once you are comfortable and start hitting corners just right the less you end up using this technique.

Also, I suspect going so hard on the throttle pushes you outwards, forcing you to maintain high steeringwheel angles, again decreasing exitspeed. On a general note, unless a car gets unstable because you are pushing it, or special kinds of track layouts that might require otherwise, once the car is stopped you you are turned in, your steeringwheelangle will never become greater, while you throttle appliance will never go down.

I was having issues feeling what My car was doing even though I own a OSW direct drive wheel. Tanks are a totally different animal. Tracks w/torsion bars running to every roadwheel... and an M1 engine w/tranny weighs around 8k lbs mounted in rear, but forward of the last wheel. Results in very good weight distribution. If anything tank struggles with too much grip and leaves rubber everywhere it goes on paved surfaces... but it can also turn on a dime. Which is surprising for a lot of people given how big it is. Moreso if you use neutral steering (only moves 1 track) or pivot steering (tracks move in opposing directions)... but it's easy to make typical car turns using the L gear. It's really meant for dirt, but you have to be careful in very loose dirt also - the rear part of the track can get trapped side-to-side in thick loose dirt... if you turn suddenly, the track will stay still and the sprocket will swing out with the tank... resulting in the track coming off the sprocket. A thrown track in thick dirt is gonna be a bad day or two.

When a corner is feeding into another and I drive through them at the same speed, I accelerate after the first and brake (still above my level: trailbraking) into the second turn. Braking in this case or even just lifting the throttle for a moment helps turn the car in.

Hey Empty Box: minute 10:52 you said that blips are for shifting. You mean, when shifting (in sequential or semi-automatic modes like gt3 cars) you blip the throttle to compensate when the car generes a little weight transfer to the front when downshifting? Sorry if I missed something, my native language isn't the english, thanks!.

Blipping the throttle on downshift is done to keep the driveline of the car stable. If you don't blip you either feed the clutch back out (like most people do on their road cars - this is slow.) or you have the engine and transmission and drive wheels not doing the same speed which causes all sorts of chaos, similar to locking the rear wheels momentarily. When you downshift, the engine needs to turn more revs in the next lower gear, so without blipping the engine needs to speed up to the proper RPMs while it's in gear - not good. Blipping is just that, bringing the engine up to the same RPM that will be used in the lower gear while the engine is still in a neutral position between gears. Blipping is not done for weight transfer, it's about keeping the car from becoming unstable due to the driveline.

yes, I know and I do that in manual transmission cars, but I don't understand it in semi-automatic gt3 cars because it's supposed the computer inside the car does it for you, and it's so hard to do the things better than a computer but I'll give it a try, thank you for responding!

Question. Let's take an example of Dover. The track clearly. It is banked everywhere, but in the corner what would you do. I let off and the car just goes straight into the wall. Now would adding a bit of break or let off the gas only a little help? Or what would I do in that situation.

You want to get into the power as early as possible, you should typically be off the throttle and getting into it by the middle of the corner. If you mean on entry, you are probably overbraking and overdriving it.

Well I do that. (Note this game is not a sim but Ivan say it's just working with it). So I can get onto the corner good but not get a good apex. Or arch. I think it's arch. You'll see on my NASCAR inside line video what I do if you don't get it. I love arching/apexing the car. But on '14, it doesn't want to. And gets tight. I don't know exactly what to do. I let off but it just goes straight to the wall. I can't tell if that's what it's supposed to do or not. If not what's the best thing to do in that situation?

the reason weight = grip (or downforce = grip) is because friction (grip) is equal to the coefficient of friction (how grippy the tires are on the track) multiplied by normal force (the force exerted by the two objects on eachother, usually by gravity*mass) I know, no one really asked, but i love this shit lol

Left foot braking is very common in racing today, especially now that modern racing gearboxes can tolerate more abuse by design so there is less need to use the clutch for anything outside of getting started.

SideFlame I honestly don't know, If you mean my foot switching thing from right foot to left foot braking mid brake zone, I think that is uncommon. I know a lot of people right foot brake for downshifts but use left foot braking for brake zones without a gear change though. Using both feet in general takes some time, but it's pretty handy just to be able to do so.

Never used it with my DFGT pedals as I always planned to replace them, but yes. Pressure is better than travel IMO, it's much easier to be more consistent that way. Not necessarily faster, but I certainly feel it's easier, in the good way.

The newer the car, the less likely you will need to. Early-2k's GT1s often had spartan dogboxes, requiring blips on downshifts; modern GT3s automate that out, so you need only ask for an up/downshift, and the car will do everything else.

Nice video "boxy"! I agree with much of what you said, but I do have a comment. You don't seem to practice what you preach. You go on the throttle very abrupt & agressively, exit the corner at WOT and then back off again to around 2/3 throttle to not overshoot the curb. Then finally go back on it, when the car is going straight. Getting the car turned, setting up apexes a smidge later and especially going on the throttle much earlier but delicately will probably yield better staight-line speed.

I Drive instinctively. are you saying am doing it wrong? i can be quick i can be really kwik if i practice a track. and i learn the track as i play it and i learn the corners as i push the car and see how i can push the car around those corners. this is how i do it. ive seen vids tell me i need to go around the track look around corners for braking areas like a bill board i do this with instinct am a good driver. in game and on the road. in real cars it becomes more about your gears. because unless you joyriding your less likely to be racing. unless your a boy racer like i use to be. ive had a few moments ;)

Look, I love Senna, but I don't understand how why so many of you insist of putting him on this pedestal. A successful history in F1 doesn't automatically make a driver the "best of all time." What metric are you using? Race wins? Total career points? Over only a single series? Why not multiple series? How can you compare a drivers from the 80s-90s to a driver from the 60s? What about the 2000s? Different era, how can you compare? Sorry, but the emotional appeals just get tiresome.

Empty Box in those situations you are finding a balance. I think it's fair to say that you can't accelerate in a turn as hard as you can going straight. You can't turn as hard while de/accelerating either. Your video demonstrates these principals. Assuming you do have traction, you're getting the same amount of "grip" when in a straight line or turning, but when you do both the force is diagonal so you have less to help you turn or speed up or whatever. I was being very general, describing how i visualize the effects going on. I do agree that yes, driving quickly around a racetrack is more complicated and every situation has its own nuances

What a dumb statement, Senna was phenomenal but considering how many disciplines of driving there are, different eras, and many other factors it's pretty much impossible to say who the GOAT race car driver. Only a fan boy would say something so ignorant. My question to you is, did you actually see Senna race or were you born too late and base everything on a documentary because there were several drivers around in F1 at the time that were close or right there with him, Prost, Mansell, and a young Schumacher come to mind first.
