I agree. I don't understand the psychology of our community sometimes. We are obsessed with finding the latest and greatest and continually spend money on things we don't need or don't necessarily work. I agree with you that if I've been shot a few times with a 50 caliber bullet I've got bigger things to worry about at that point.

For those wondering: let's take a .50 BMG round that immediately prior to impact has kinetic energy of 18,000 J. Assuming the plate is 0.48 inches thick and there is neither penetration nor deformation, then total impact force on the user is 1,475,409 N. On a plate with a surface area of 120 square inches, we are looking at 2,763 psi. For reference, that is about 2x a heavyweight professional boxer's punch. There is definitely the potential for lethal blunt force trauma.

The round that hit lower right set my smoke grenade off and caught me on fire, 10 seconds before that I took shrapnel to my arm face and eyes from a hand grenade. It would be interesting. The results would likely vary with the patterns of use of the plate or soft armor. Most of these warranty/expiration periods seem to presume daily or regular use. @@kenofken9458 Correct, the warranty is expecting the plates to be worn regularly and be in varying climates, such as trunk of a police cruiser in hot or cold weather. The dates are also conservative for liability reasons. If you dont heavily abuse them and they spend most of their time sitting in your closet theyll easily last 10+ years. The speculation is that they are using HB210 or HB212, current generation PE. With that material "stopping" those threats at this thickness isn't an issue, but it's not done because the BFS would be too high, and the multi-hit capability would be diminished. Al seem to agree when looking at those specs on Dayton's PDFs. To say Dayton Armor is the "best armor" on the planet is a misnomer, it's more like heading towards a different direction than what's safe. They take a "safe" formula and shaved it down, kind of like Hesco but more extreme.

Hey Karl, would you consider doing a video on those expired plates you have? Perhaps some types of materials will still be able to stop threats they were once rated for. There are like four videos on KZbin, I think if you did a test it would be a hit. Either way, thank you (I’m not saying to wear expired armor... this is for less than optimal scenarios)

As I understood, Dayton Armor does not sell level IV plates. level IV is replaced by RF3, but the best I could find in Dayton armor is RF2+, which is rated for 5.56mm M855 BT

Love the video! I'm definitely interested in purchasing a set of their RF1 or RF2+ plates given that they're about a pound lighter than anything else on the market; however, I'm concerned about the lack of information on the Dayton Armor products outside of this video. I've tried contacting them for more info, but never received a response. It would be great if you could shoot their RF1/RF2+ plates so we can see how their higher rated commercially available plates perform with multiple impacts and different calibers!

Karl…first & foremost, thank you for your service to our country. I enjoy the hell out of watching your videos. But I wanted to comment on this one. Please do not feel that this is criticism. I’m just merely an old Army Ranger making some points. In this video I noticed that the plate you put through the .50 cal torture test “Karl Special” is not something that they currently sell to LEO, SWAT guys or civilians. I’m not even sure if it was just a collaborative effort specially made for you by Dayton Armor. They seem to be a high speed, low drag company but I’m truly curious as to how the RF1 and RF2 plates actually stand up to the specific threats they are designed to defeat. I see very little about them online and even less reviews. I’m very curious as to their claims. I’m in the market for a set of thin, lightweight plates that I can use in conjunction with the SHITTY, useless soft armor my department issues. What’s the possibility of setting something like this up? After 12yrs as a Ranger and 24yrs as a LEO my old, broken down, metal & pin filled body no longer wants to carry a bulky, heavy ceramic plate which is why I’m searching the polyethylene plates. The RF1 at .38” thick and 1.6lbs is right up my alley. Do you have any additional resources I can look into about Dayton Armor? The fact that certain “varsity” teams that don’t “exist” are using them has piqued my interest. Thanks.

Please pardon some personal opinions…Ive been inside a lot of chests. I spent 12 months on a cardio thoracic vascular surgery service during a general surgery residency. That initial 50 caliber BROWNING machine gun round or 50 BMG (not Barrett) plate deformation was lethal-I’ve gotta give J Browning his due👊🏻 Barrett builds that amazing rifle. The sternum would have shattered and the resultant force load with bone fragments into the mediastinum or heart sack would’ve lacerated all kinds of pipes big enough to have names. Not to mention the hydrostatic force the blood within the heart would place upon the heart chambers, valves and vessels. DEAD RIGHT THERE. If thicker clothes, muscles, Kevlar were present and behind the plate, that offset could allow for survivability. Mileage can vary and usually is at different the drivers discretion. The best plate carrier is situational awareness. Thanks for these incredible videos.

If you’re taking a .50 to the chest at point blank, you’re probably a soldier in the Russian army who was caught trying to AWOL and the only reason you’re wearing a plate like that was so they would have a few seconds to mock you while you bled out internally.
