A cross of light: wonderfully simple and brilliant idea. Tadao Ando truly is one of the great!

He is obviously a genius with light and space. I did search for articles on the acoustics of the church, which is typically very important for a "place of worship." Next to nothing came up. I can just imagine a concrete box like this being excruciating to the ear, regardless of its beauty. I was also surprised by the bulging sconces along the side of the pews...I thought TA would have used recessed lighting but maybe he was in the process of defining his signature style, at the time. I don't see at all, from the video, how the Abby influenced his design. Simply perplexing. Nearly all historical Christian churches feature a crucifix layout, for both symbolic and structural purposes. In addition, I am not sure why the narrator, like many western Europeans (or those who have learned from them), constantly use the term "Oriental," which is outdated, insensitive, and mostly offensive. Have you heard the term, "Asian," by any chance?

Solemn monastic and just shy of being not enough yet serves its purpose and nothing more. Almost feels random but improvised like good jazz. Intelligent yet faithful to its purpose. This is wise and spiritual architecture.

I'm not sure genius is quite the word I'd use... but apparently when something isn't beautiful to 95% of people, but it is respected in the academic community, I suppose the only conclusion is that it is a genius far beyond the comprehension of the masses. Please excuse my harsh criticism... But I can't understand how this is seen as a great work of art. Perhaps great, but not good.

It was a very low budget project and I think it is plenty of spirituality and humbleness..
