When Amjad Khan was selected for the role of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, by Satyajit Ray, Amjad Shahib met with an accident and was bed ridden. Amjad Khan being a gentleman, asked Satyajit Ray to replace him, as the shooting will be delayed for him. Ray told him, that Nawab's role will be played by Amjad Khan only, otherwise he will cancel the project altogether. This was always remembered by Amjad Khan, and told in some interviews. When I see the movie, even now, I feel, what a selection, Ray had made at that time. I had seen Kings and Nawabs in many movies, but Amjad Khan proved that an exquisite dress or a diamond studded crown don't make a king or a nawab. It is the attitude, the look, and the behaviour that makes a king or a nawab. After seeing this movie, I can't think anyone can be a Nawab, other than Amjad Khan. May his sole rest in peace.

It’s as if Amzad was born for this role. The real nawab Wajid Ali Shah would have approved this characterization whole heartedly. Spent one year in Lucknow - in my opinion it is the best city in all of Northern India. The people, especially in old Lucknow, are so nice and warm! Will forever remember.
