This first week of the tour is a 10/10 for me. Surprise attack winners (Yates, Lafay), contested sprints, monster performances from special riders (WVA and Hindley), interesting tactics and most importantly Jonas and Pog fighting like hell at the front. Cherry on top are Patrick and Benji. Thanks for making cycling fun again !

LR highlighted Pogacar cooling down before the steepest ramp on Puy de Dome, but I think it was probably important for Jonas that he didn't take any final hydration or cool down in a similar area of the climb. It looked like he also could've come out of the saddle a bit to give his cadence a reset after the Pog attack, but had that blank stare of overheating most of us know too well.

So fun to watch the Tour this year. I can still rememeber the old days when you would turn on the telly and youll just see the exact same Sky train in front each and every day with absolutely nothing happening. It was like the GC was pre determined and the only thing worth watching were the individual stages. For me Van Aert is the most entertaining rider. Very sorry for Matteo Jorgensen and especially that he did not even get a podium. Woods a worthy winner and I agree with LR that Victor Campanaerts saved Mike Woods with his pacing of Group 3 up to Group 2 in the final 11 km. As to Jonas vs Pog I was surprised how well Jonas did. All day yesterday TJV including Jonas ate the wind for WVA while except for the last 1km uphill sprint Pog surfed and rested. Then today TJV chose the strategy of taking it to all the GC teams on the final climb starting right from the suburbs of Clermont-Ferrand. It worked to eliminate all the other GC contenders and also all of UAE domestiques but not Pog himself who had more reserves. Still gaining 7secs was useful to him but I’m not sure it was such a psychological blow to Jonas who knows that he and he team have done a lot more work over the past two days.

Sorry but I completely disagree. This was a bad day for Vingegaard: he's supposed to go better in the heat than Pogacar, has a more complete team around him but lost, for the second day in a row, more time to Pogacar. Remember Pogacar is undertrained coming into this tour after his injury at Liege and I can only see him getting stronger relative to Vingegaard. As far as the other GC threats: there are none. Vingegaard has one person to beat and the fact that he put time into Pidcock, Yates, Hindley et al is meaningless.
@Dee-Ell
@Dee-Ell Жыл бұрын
@@dermotbarry-murphy9451 Sorry but I completely disagree. Pogi is supposed to be much better and a more complete rider than Jonas but is still behind in GC. Pogi is so much better that he shouldn't need a better team to lead and win the Tour -- that's why he has the team he has. TJV does a lot of work and often splits work for WVA in one stage and for Jonas in another; while Team UAE does it for Pogi day in day out, all tour-long. Pogi should be leading this tour, even if "undertrained" (yeah right, so "undertrained" that he enjoys doing meaningless sprint finishes) but he isn't.
@epincion
@epincion Жыл бұрын
@@dermotbarry-murphy9451 I don’t believe for a minute that Pog was really undertrained in coming in in the sense of being underconditioned. He may not have spent much time on a road bike but he compensated by an alternate training program that consisted of such things as hours of running up and down steep roads or stairs with a backpack plus the usual stationary bike training. Pog only had a more complete team around him precisely because UAE has only one objective which is yellow for Pog whereas TJV have two - yellow for Jonas and opportunistic stage wins for WVA (& Laporte). Personally I don’t like the split aim but it is what it is as it’s the price of Wout’s participation. As I said in my first comment this has meant that already TJV as a team has done much more work than UAE as for example in stage 8 when they went all out for WVA in the final 1/3 of the stage. Despite this when going up the Puy de Dome the domestique who lasted the longest was Sepp Kuss - where was UAE? So while Jonas lost 8 secs to Pog and came second I was surprised at how well he did given the effort he put in the day before. All riders in a three week GC get fitter as the weeks progress (unless they are injured in a crash) - the classic example being Sepp Kuss who always peaks in the third week. So yes Pog will get fitter but Jonas will also get fitter.
@dermotbarry-murphy9451
@dermotbarry-murphy9451 Жыл бұрын
@@epincion Some interesting points. However I still think the idea that TJV will look at the last two days and be pleased with how they went is just wrong. Yesterday specifically the temperature suited Jonas, his team set exactly the pace he wanted up the last climb and still he ended up losing time. I'm not saying the tour is done or that Vingegaard is a bad rider only that last night he was disappointed. Also I'm really not sure how sincere you're being when you state that not being able to ride a bike for a number of weeks.leading up to the tour is not a big deal. Running up and down stairs as ideal prep for the Tour de France? Most significantly though: no one actually gets fitter during a Grand Tour, it's more a question of who loses less form. And as far as that goes, both Pogacar and Vingegaard have shown that they can perform in the third week. There's no reason that I'm aware of though to think that Pogacar will not have the upper hand then. I think it's going to be a thriller but Pogacar will win this one.

Such a tough thing!! I never really liked it that they let the spectators be so close to the riders. I am sorry but as long as people are allowed that close, accidents will happen. I am greatly astonished that no one else crashed at that time.

So far Tadej has reversed the edge that Jonas had when he put more than a minute on him on the final climb a few stages back. So, for all those saying Jonas had this wrapped up you should probably reconsider that thought. Of course, the final mountains will be the decider as well as the TT's so at this point we can probably say the winner is either going to be Tadej or Jonas but not which one of them.

You really have to cheer for both of them. Really incredible we get to watch them go at it. I definitely lean towards Pog a bit more, maybe it’s his seemingly inferior team maybe it’s just wanting to see such a well rounded rider succeed. Either way Im just happy to see it play out. Good luck to them both! Hopefully at some point we will see a third join the fight as well… but who can?

@@patpat8727 yep, when you're in the lead with a decent time gap and there's weeks left to race all you have to do is pace the effort, Jonas was probably measuring the effort not to tire himself out so early in the race whereas pogacar went full gas to get that gap back. Jonas is probably aiming to be even with Tadej on time until the 3 mountain stages in a row next week and will attack on grand colombier, only at that point will he try to win the race and get the gap too big for tadej to close in the last week.

The way Jumbo operated today on the final climb gave me flashbacks of the tour of 2020, I think the last 2 mountain stages or so. I understand that having the yellow jersey comes with controlling the race, but Jumbo could have just set a defensive tempo up the Puy de Dome. It is up to Pogi and UAE to win time back on the yellow jersey. Setting a hard pace up the climb as Jumbo is working for Pogi too, They dont have another leader like Roglic to put pogacar under pressure. I am intrigued what the strategy is going to be but I think if they race like this the rest of the tour Pogi will fool them and take his 3rd win of the GC.

I live in Clermont Ferrand, and was there today... it's complicated to organise, 30 years ago, the Puy de Dome was open to cars and had a huge car park at the top so it was pretty simple to organize this kind of events. Now it's a Unesco protected site and one rule is to avoid all human activities... so it's pretty complicated to get a TDF finish on a narrow road next to a train track, a train station and a HUGE transmission antenna in a natural site. But they did it due to TDF legacy and the touristic advertisement that ensued the announcement. The organisation had been pretty schyzophrenic until now, all the Puy de Dome (volcano site) has been blocked by gendarmerie and military (They used night vision googles to spot the most motivated fans in the woods), people had been parked in a huge fan zone so the arrival looks pretty bizarre with nobody at the finish and the final climb. Very bizarre because it has been announced as a very popular event, but at the end there has been so much limitations and privatisation that I'm a bit frustrated to have been spectator in this. Just to be clear, PDD is one hell of a popular tourist attraction (~200000/y), So I'm wondering why today, they choose to display a desert place...

Agreed, but the decision to put the arrival there is a bit curious considering the inapropriate infrastructure during the climb and at the top. The podium image is nice too... It would have been even cooler to get it next to the ruins of the Roman temple standing 50 meters away. Lastly, I'm a bit frustrated that the Clermont Ferrand mayor (O. Bianchi pretty famous here for his ignominous bike infrastructure management... bike lanes are a joke here) got the chance to be a the summit and get some free advertisement. Same thing with L. Wauquiez and L. Chauvin (AURA region president and Departement region president). Plus i'm still pretty angry ;bicycles were not allowed in the fanzone and there were no place to park bike securely... great forward thinking. But the stage was cool as hell, Micheal Woods victory made my day, the Pog/Vin battle has been great.
