Glad to see you expand to other energy savings topics. Electric vehicles save money on fuel costs. Solar panels save money on utility costs. Reducing your homes usage of energy (fossil fuels) saves money and helps the planet. Tips on saving energy at home are a welcome addition. There is a Climate Crisis.We all need to take additional Climate Action.

Not sure they have an air quality monitor built in to the radiator thermostats.It just presumes the quality is not good if it hasn't detected a window being opened for a while.I'm guessing it knows due to change in humidity levels when window opened.

I have the first version of Tado and the geofencing with automatic heating on/off is free with no subscription and main reason for the cost & CO2 savings. Its a brilliant system and at the time it was far more advanced then Nest or Hive. They've obviously changed their business model though.
@NicolasRaimo5 жыл бұрын
Yep early systems they tried to bring in subs and legal battle and challenge was going to be mounted so they stopped it. Very sad they introduced it as it’s only let down of system.

I have a version 1 since they kickstarted it great system. Really like the geofencing feature and the fact it works with IFTTT so have it turning on blink alarm when we are out and also switching hue lights on and off.

I’ve now installed a far superior system “Honeywell Home” each TRV talks to a central controller which in turn switches the heating on and off in my case via the micro switch inside the heating motorised valve. This means each TRV is an independent zone, no need for a central room thermostat, when all the TRVs are up to temp the heating switches off. The Honeywell system is more expensive to install but can save up to 20% on your heating bills because only the rooms that need heat get it unlike systems that rely on a central thermostat to turn the boiler on and off. I see so many people having to keep upping the thermostat to keep the heat on because not all the rooms are warm enough. Honeywell home avoids that problem.

One question, does the wall mounted thermostat have overall control of the boiler. By that I mean if it has reached temp and the rad valves haven’t does that mean the heating goes off. I want a system that comes on when one of the TRVs is looking for heat. At the moment I’ve 8 dumb TRVs on my rads and a central thermostat in the hall that takes overall control, when it’s reached temp the heating switches off.
@NicolasRaimo3 жыл бұрын
Yes the wall thermostat has overall control, If the room your in isn't getting to temperature then 2 options make that the room the thermostat goes or have your system correctly balanced

@@NicolasRaimo Hi, then that’s no better than my previous system “Nest” I’ve now installed a far superior system “Honeywell Home” each TRV talks to a central controller which in turn switches the heating on and off in my case via the micro switch inside the heating motorised valve. @@NicolasRaimo I have a Tado, and the wall thermostat is just another device. Any device, whether thermostat or valve, can switch the boiler on. So, yes, the boiler comes on when just one valve wants it, even though neither of the wall thermostats have dropped below 19 degrees.

Perhaps if the thermostat is wired it works differently, but both mine are wireless.

subscription is a way for them to ensure that they stay afloat as a business. You know, servers cost money. And they aren't google or amazon - so they don't scam you off your personal data and sell it off. So .. But yes, they ask to pay for a silly little feature. Oh well..

@madsnygaard83544 жыл бұрын
Agree on your view on subscription. One subject that nobody seem willing to tap into about these Tado thermostats is build quality?! As we speak (write) I have one of the Tado thermostat models in my own hands. This is my impression: Disappointingly flimsy hollow sounding regulating design of the temperature control that has a distinctively poor sensory feel as well. Also the extreme ease of the temperature turning part makes me think it only needs a slight push to get totally offset. Having kids this should concern everybody (unless it's possible to put a temperatur 'lock' on units via the app or something like that - I haven't gotten that far in the setup process). Also poor setup/locking adaptors for attaching to the radiator. Have since learned that the included plastic adaptor indeed are crap which makes the attachment less than trustworthy. Honestly did NOT feel convinced that these thermostats would be able to hold up for years and years - especially not in a house with kids around. I ordered 10 of these units and I am soooo close to returing them on the spot as they simply don't convince me quality- wise. If all needs to be replaced within a few years- what's the CO2 footprint of that... after all producing new stuff and shipping it is part of the environment bill overall as well - there's a footprint to every replacement made as well that should be factored in which everybody tend to ignore due to their smart home gadget crawings (myself included). If we want to save the climate I'm not sure added consuming is the way. In this case I felt that it was a warranted investment. Now I'm totally unsure tbh. To address my scepticism about model quality I for one would be very interested in reviews from buyers after min. 4-5 years of usage - especially people with boys climbing stuff like monkeys. My honest impression is that these we're never build to be touched (which kinda makes sense but does not diminish the need for build quality). Haven't been able to track a single one down of these down yet though. Also, how a bout battery consumption? Topic for a followup a few years from now maybe? (besides knowing whether you need your money back). Longest comment on youtube ever - be proud - and thanks for an overall solid review mate. Best!

Tried to install Tado TRV in a room too far away from Internet bridge. What are my options? Do I need a second bridge?

How far away is it, could be a faulty unit as Tado showed it works in 3 story homes without any issues, maybe pair near by and then move to location see if that works?

I love electric but I would never say they are environmentally friendly....This is the myth of electric vehicles. I would say at best, less damaging than fossil, however much of the electricity, actually most of it is derived from coal or nuclear . Nuclear being arguably the best source of electricity to power cars etc, much cleaner. Present electric vehicles are still essentially coal burners. Solar, wind all have huge downsides. and the set up costs of wind turbines has enormous carbon footprint. The production of new electric car, batteries ,raw materials, where they are sourced, environmental. impact at source. Yes, we might clean up the city centres but lets get real, this is the only advantage I can see at the moment. The emperors new clothes springs to mind. I applaud the public spirited save the world notion. (actually the world will be fine once we are gone), The issue is not about sustainable power, its about world overpopulation. This is the central problem. Tackle this and power issues will go away. I love the idea of an electric car , I am seriously wanting to do my bit and it is always on my mind and in my actions but the issues need to be seen as they are, not as many others would have us believe. Scooting down the road i your Tesla or you Zoe is nice, im sure, but is it truly having a positive effect on the global scale?

Please see the video are electric cars good for the environment, Wind is the CHEAPEST form of grid generation and unlike wind, and coal there is no subsidies
@tusdardcart5 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid you have been misinformed. For example, at this precise moment coal is providing only 0.7% of the national grid load whereas wind is providing about 30%. I agree that it isn't perfect but it's getting significantly better than you think.

Interesting fact for all you fossil fuel nerds. Refining one gallon of petrol or diesel uses approximately 4.5kWh of electricity - enough to move the average EV 16 - 20 miles. Just imagine all the extra electricity available if we stopped using ICE vehicles - more surplus for charging EV's!!!!!
