Tae Kwon Do One Step Sparring for Black Belts: 1-5 One Steps
These are the original traditional Korean Tae Kwon Do One Steps. As traditional Tae Kwon Do black belts, one of the testing requirements for first Dan is to know one step sparring 1-25. These “one steps” are self defense movements that you practice over and over again. When you practice these counter movements, try to improve your speed, accuracy, and strength. We are introducing the first five one steps.

I too train with Master Shin beginning in 1978. Because of work hours, I had to cease training for a bit. I am now 68 and train with Master Shin 4 to 10 times a month as my job schedule permits. Good show! Its interesting to see what I learned as a white belt! There is much opinion with today's martial arts. Some right, some wrong. As someone gains experience, one might find their opinions change. Just stay on the road, sometimes called way...............

Your #1 would result to a punch right in the face. I was always taught that the left arm blocks with a right punch to the face. Stepping in with a left punch would run right into theirs….

Hello, these are the original traditional Korean one steps passed down from traditional Korean Tae Kwon Do. Our grandmaster Seoung Eui Shin studied under Hwang Lee (Moo Duk Kwan), so these are the requirements for testing. Different schools have different requirements and do make their own one steps, two step, three step sparring, etc., but if you want to learn the original traditional Korean one steps, there are actually a total of 25. We are planning to get back to recording the rest of them. Thank you for using our concepts and for your comments. We love when people share our same passions!

I am a second degree in taekwondo, and in my opinion, your chambers for a lot of your moves are long and complicated. For example, your low block chamber had a very long unnecessary movement. All you would really need is a quick chamber with one hand to the opposite ear and the other hand pointing down towards the ground. Doing it your way would be very inconvenient in a real fight. I would love an explanation about why you do this, thank you.

Thank you for a great question. The reason for long movements is that it is harder; that means we have to build our muscles to be faster and stronger. In a real fight, if our long movements become easier than our short movements are even faster in reaction. We don't use long movements in a real fight, but they build memory, strength, and speed, so our reaction time is much faster when it is a shorter stance or shorter movement. You can check out our self-defense videos for this type of application. Similar in the concepts of Kungfu, they have long, low movements that they practice over and over again, to get faster and stronger. Also, the longer movements allow us to use "pull"; the harder we pull the harder the impact; it will be slower but depending on what we are doing, like breaking boards, the pulling and big movements are function to help put our body weight behind the hit. If you punch only with your arm, then it is only 10 pounds of force coming from the weight of your arms. If you put the weight of your body behind the force of your fist, it makes a much harder impact. But we are practicing the hard way, so that the hard things become easier. The same in forms/poomsae. We practice forms like we are fighting, even though we don't do the exact movements to defend ourselves. It is to build strength, speed, and flexibility to be able to react. The repetition of long movements is for building better reaction time. I hope that answers your question.
