SHARING As for my experience in sparring, when I'm sparring with taller opponent. I would play a kick and stick strategy, as taller opponent has wider attack range it's harder to counter him as you need to travel a longer range to land a kick. But the opposite, you can stick near in a range which you can hit but he can't. This is how i do. 1st get in range which his normal round house cant land(wait for him to engage and please guard well), 2nd, land a kick(body facing same direction use back leg; different direction use front leg), 3rd, stick on him or give a punch then stick on him(put you both hand beside his leg, don't hug). Last wait for the judge to separate you two, if the judge didn't stop then sidestep to a side where you can land a kick using front leg (front leg is faster)then stick again. Repeat the process, you need to be slightly faster and flexible then your opponent to do this.

One thing I’ll say as a tall guy is my instructor is much shorter than me and he blocks and counters and moves really fast to get inside my range so that I’m limited in my strikes (leg strikes mostly) but his shorter body isn’t , then he laces me up with a few licks and stops to bow with a grin. If he stays outside the whole time he has to block everything and no one can block everything. Man I miss TKD. Stop when covid came and never went back- nothing but busy life and laziness ever since. I want to train again. Ugh...

To win against a defenceive types defence,u need to break his defence.rather trying several attacks and wasting your stamina& strength,douge his attacks(let him attack).(when you got a opening)Then in one shot,give all you got.Even he try's to block,he is going to hurt himself.I suggest:tkd punch,side kick or back kick for 👉 you.😁It's just a advice from a teakwondo-scientist from India...☮peace

Great tutorial, I always thought hook pinches were illegal in sparring but I guess not. I also have no experience in sparring at all so this is helpful

Not illegal but don't always score...tkd is a mess when it comes to rules, some places the hook will score and other places not...check the rules in your area... hooks in tkd are not supposed to score in Canada...lol

@@jessehir9263 but if you have a really powerful hook you could hit your opponent with it just to make them tired. I was in an academy that did in house tournaments and told us it was by wtf standard. Guess not. Now I’m at an academy that sends people to national and international tournaments so this is very helpful to know thank you

@@austinwiebe2648 100% agree with you, use it if possible but don't expect to always score in wtf/Olympic rules...it is not illegal. I use the hook because I like too, if it scores great if not use it as a setup or just to put fear in the other person, stops them from clinching sometimes...and I hate the clinch...lol...unless I'm allowed to take them down...lol 🤣

Hi guys, I am not familiar with the punching rules in Olympic Taekwondo. So can anybody perhaps answer what exactly it is that prevents me from using Kyokushin style punching in the sport? Thanks!

Nothing will likely "prevent you"...just won't score points...only time it will be a problem is if you punch someone in the neck or face...thats a penalty in WT/Olympic Tkd

@@nytrodralyg1860 rules for wt/Olympic sparring when it comes to punches is a joke...some score hooks, some don't, some score front hand punch some only score if it's a straight cross, best to check with ref's at the tournament you are entering, practice them all and use what you are able too for the given tournament or use them all and get whatever possible for the points...simple answer to your question is punches to the chest protector are 100% legal...points rewarded are based on ref's/judges education on rules and which rules they follow...like I said punching in Olympic/WT tkd is a mess!!!!...no simple answer as to why so many differences from country to country or tournament to tournament all under the same WT/OLYMPIC banner...
