The story of the founding of Savate covers this; in 1830 Charles Lecour suffered defeat at the hands of an English bareknuckle pugilist named Owen Swift. The traditional 'good old English method of deciding a quarrel' had always been to punch one another with bareknuckles, and the English despised the French method of using the feet for kicking, considering it to be unmanly, foreign and cowardly. As French fighters had, until that time, really only used their hands for blocking, parrying and slapping, it became immediately obvious that they were at a distinct disadvantage when fighting at close range against skilled fist-fighters. Lecour recognized these limitations, so took English boxing lessons from another English pugilist named Jack Adams. After a period of two years, Lecour assimilated the French kicking methods and combined them with English boxing to create la boxe francaise.

You obviously need to know how to defend punches, which are taught in every martial art. However they are much easier to defend against than a boxer defending against low kicks. It’s not something they train for and a boxers legs are unconditioned. Keep them away and find the distance with teeps to the legs and low roundhouse kicks to take the legs out. If it was a real fight the Thai Boxer wouldn’t need more than 3 or 4 good landed low roundhouse kicks to end the fight. Taking the boxers legs away from them. Another great video. Respectfully, I feel that using more teep / push kicks would have been a useful way to control the range... the circular kicks are good, but can be (were) negated by the boxer closing the distance (and, to be fair were not thrown 'in anger' to destroying that front leg which would have reduced the boxers mobility, but also lost a friend!)... the side kicks were good but are too slow compared to a teep / push kick which can be done as a fast kick (like flicking out a jab) or a power kick (like a cross to the body to sap the stamina). Anyway, it was a great video, I enjoy all of them, thank you for making them.

@chitownmo3 жыл бұрын
It is true that a kick is more powerful than punch, but the advantage of punching primarily vs. kicking primarily(TKD. Karate styles) is the fact that a fighter has both feet on the ground at all times which provides more stability to attack or defend at a moments notice where as with a kick you need space, timing and deception to use properly without either potentially harming yourself(Getting checked. Foot/Leg damage on Checks and Kick catches. Missing and being out of position. Exposing the groin area on high kicks). That is why low kicks are more effective than higher or flashier kicks. Less delivery time and they flow with punch combinations easier.

While I do side with punches as a more versatile and easy to use tool as opposed to kicking, testing them out in bouts like this are unreliable, since punches are seen as reliable if they mostly connect, but its much harder to tell if a kick wouldve worked when there's less power behind it. I did 6 years of different styles of Martial arts before my dad introduced me into boxing when I was 15. I thought I had all the skills I needed. Then my dad said. You dont know anything and took me to a boxing gym. 1st day was tradition. I got my ass kicked by a guy less than 100 pounds and I was 135 pounds. I then became hooked. I spent 2 years training in boxing and then going to my brothers dojo just training with hands in sparring to the point everyone in the dojo forgot I was the senior in the dojo. They just thought I was the boxing guy. Then many years later. Muay Thai woken me up more when I went to Thailand to train. But even now. When my skills start to lessen due to either being busy or just straight slacking off. I start with the basics again. Boxing became my core out of all the martial arts I have studied. There's a saying from Master K of Muay Thai. Punches defeats Kicks. Elbows and knees defeat punches. And kicks defeat elbows and knees. Not always the case but a good reference. When I watched you. Of course casual sparring you can kick a lot more for advantage. But someone of more aggression would tank the first few hit if you even land and barrage you. That is why the kicks need to be selective and practiced heavily with pure confidence compared to punches.

I will give you my 2 cents for this, In ancient greece mma pankration they avoided high kicks and the reason behind it was A the loss of balance B a block with knee or elbow could significally impair your mobility. High kicks are high risk, high reward techniques, you either end your opponent fast through your range advantage or you might end up destroyed. Punches on the other hand are faster and more secure ,if you break your arm on a block you can still go and do damage with not much of an issue and you dont significally impaire your mobility thus your range control. Low kicks, front kicks knee strikes and foot sweeps are another matter they are more secure. The boxing dude wasnt really good on using his blocks against legs btw , legs need power blocks and strikes to render useless but this depent on the ruleset you fight.

Two arms + 2 feet planted on the ground = ⬆️ speed + ⬆️ stability + ⬆️ damage output per second compared to 1 foot on the ground + recovery time that is needed to recoil the kicking leg. And I am saying this as one who is built to be a natural kicker. Just like Sensei Seth; he has the built of a natural kicker, no doubt. What happened to the Hiza-Geris? These are great when the opponent gets in close. Into the kidneys and liver and they will stop. One thing I noticed, all the kicks are defensive, no attacks. Is there a reason for this?

Kick can be better if you are the most agile fighter, and you have to be very skilled and and super good at movement, also in sparring it's a little weightet towards punches because you can more easly throw more but you also generally need more of them, while with kicks you really only need a good one to end it, and even if you block them they still hurt, anyway I woud rather only punch than only kick in a fight, the easier thing is the best bet most of time

I think you were just overall better at funneling him into doing what you wanted him to do. You could control and manipulate the environment to your whim and he had to just follow along. Idk. I've seen Karate guys get destroyed by boxers; boxers get destroyed by BJJ practitioners, etc. The list goes on. I think it really depends on your tactics and having a deep understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your style. Whoever has the better understanding and tactics wins.

Whats better for martial arts? Obviously punches is the best

If they are aggressive I think you are better off using only front kicks (push kicks) to the body and inside calf kicks to their lead leg to disrupt their balance, make it annoying for them you walk you down with punches.If they are defensive and hang back then do round kicks and other spinning shit to deceive them.

good stuff, Seth, thanks. Question: why didn't you feel like using front leg maegeri's at all? Couldn't you use it to push him back?

Not fun squaring up to a person who is throwing punches at your face. A side kick is just a front kick where your not facing tbem

@@SenseiSeth oh I see, makes sense. Brings your head further away, since you're pivoting the hips sideways. Got it, thanks.

Who is the Francis Ngannou of Kicking?

One gap here is you know how to defend punches and he doesn't know how to defend kicks. When I've sparred TKD guys it's gone really badly for them 😂. That said, it's reversed there. I can defend kicks and they don't practice face punch defense. Overall fun video! Well done.

@@SenseiSeth haha thanks Seth. Doesn't change the fact you did so well only kicking. Nicely done.
