I'm very surprised you didn't watch it solely for his dance moves. You can truly see some iconic Michael Jackson nods in this one in particular. Taemin grew up watching Michael and imitating his movements. He's truthfully the whole package. Idea is also an incredible song and video.

"Criminal" is the second part of Taemin's Never Gonna Dance Again album. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle. As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.” And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is the victim who is being held captive by the criminal who I see as represented by the lover that he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by a lover. He has now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him, so now he accepts the abuse as a normal part of the relationship. Even though he is being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) he can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt him, etc. As part of the story, he has been held captive for so long that he is now suffering from stockholm syndrome, so he is no longer fighting the abuse and that is why you see him throw his bindings away. The criminal (which is a metaphor for the pressure he has felt in his career) no longer has to tie him up to keep him there. (Because he has fallen in love with the pain and suffering he inflicts on himself as a artist, etc.) The backup dancers represent the forces he is struggling against as he fights with his mind over whether to stay or go, etc. Fun fact: It was Taemin's idea to include the police blotter/news clips in that part of the song. If you notice, the sound bites are from all over the world and they are speaking multiple languages. This albums whole concept is a metaphor for his life and career. With every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship. And "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today. But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does. All of Taemin's dances tell a story. As he has said, he specifically designs his choreography to be a part of the story within the song and MV. So, "Criminal" is supposed to be slightly creepy, as well as sexy. He is literally being abused and asking you to please "destroy me more." As a member of SHINee, Taemin has trained his entire career to be able to pull off this type of intense and intricate dancing while singing live and always sounding flawless the whole time. That is what SHINee are known for. So not only is Taemin an amazing dancer, but he is also one of the best singers in the industry, and his group SHINee make up one of the top groups, that everyone looks up to and dreams of even coming close to being as good as. If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, not only should you see his live performance, but just wait until you see his dance practice video for "Criminal." You will be even more blown away.

Thank you for another Taemin reaction. He is so unique and extremely DEEP! To understand this MV, you need to understand that it is part of his 2020, 2-part album, "Never Gonna Dance Again (NGDA), Acts 1 & 2 cohesive storyline. "Criminal" is in Act 1 and has the concept of Stockholm syndrome where he is both the "criminal" and victim within his own mind. Since 2015's MV for "Press Your Number", we've seen Taemin in a similar dual role. This, we believe, comes from his constant struggle to reconcile his celebrity status and self with his Christian worldview. Taemin absolutely loves what he does. For him singing and music is how he expresses himself and speaks to us and for him, to dance is to breathe. However, all of this comes with a price. Along with that status of fame comes the temptation to embrace all the sins inherent within that status -- arrogance, greed, selfishness, all the deadly sins. This causes tremendous stress. As I said, he first began to express this struggle with PYN, but it is also evidence with his songs/MVs for "Want", and "Famous". With "Criminal", he's talking about the love/hate relationship with himself rather than a separate love interest. There is a lot of religious imagery and symbolism with references to death and resurrection - the first image of crows flying around him (death) as he's suffocating with a bag over his head and then the same image but with butterflies surrounding him (resurrection/metamorphosis); we also see him embedded within a statue in his classic "T-Pose" which represents Christ on the Cross. Even the lyrics show this struggle between two egos fighting for supremacy, "My heart with an open wound is already full of your fingerprints." It's his own heart and fingerprints which hurt him. It causes heartache when he is tempted to embrace the temptations that fill the celebrity world but would result in betraying his faith. "My hand holding yours that stabbed me are not clean either"...of course they aren't. He is "stabbing" himself every time he "sins" by succumbing to temptation. However, no Christian is perfect...NO ONE CAN BE PERFECT. It's impossible. We all sin in one way or another, at one time or another. This conundrum plagues Taemin. "I'm on a leash called you" means he tries to keep a tight control over himself. According to his faith, Taemin knows that to "Destroy me more" is a way to refine himself by fire in order to purify himself. The second part of this story is contained in the MV for the title song of NGDA Act 2, "IDEA". "IDEA" continues the struggle between the two in an epic battle depicted through images of Hell (criminal) and Heaven (victim). Taemin, once again, uses a very unique concept to convey this message - Plato's Theory of Forms -- which states that any any created being (form) cannot create itself. Only an outside power/being can be the creator and only that creator (Messiah) can make or be perfection. This philosophy fits in perfectly with Taemin's Christian worldview. Within the MV/song, victim Taemin is finally getting a glimpse of what he considers the perfect "IDEA" of Taemin as created by his Messiah. That perfect being must, once again, become a blending of both, as he is a part of both egos (we see this illustrated in the epilogue song, "Advice", where Taemin wears a blended suit of black/white). However, before that "IDEA" of perfection can be achieved, there has to be a death and resurrection. He understands that to move forward to the next level, he needs to be refined through destruction and made new again. "Advice", which you've already reacted to, is the aftermath of the entire story. In the opening, you see him battle scarred but ready to begin his new chapter as the reborn Taemin...and he comes out strong, stating I will take my own advice from now on, meaning even more control over his artistry. He will no longer listen to the "one" collective advice of naysayers. It's a promise for Act 2 of his career which will begin when he returns from his service.

I respect that it's not your cup of tea, and that you respect Taemin's talent. He is a versatile artist. I personally love this song, it just makes me dance and gets stuck in my head. The full dance practice is awesome, as usual, Taemin just channels MJ whether he means to or not, while being completely Taemin - if that makes sense. He knows how to mesmerise through choreo. MOVE might not be your cup of tea either but so worth it just to see Taemin killing choreo.

I watched the livestream when you did this but watching it again I remembered your comment about Kylie Minogue jumping out at me then too. As an Aussie Melbournian (from Melbourne Australia) just like Kylie I am very familiar with her stuff and yes, the beginning of this song reminds me of her song! So weird! (and your second pronunciation of her surname was correct) On another note, I love Taemin. I am Army (BTS forever) but Taemin is my solo artist that I love. As a dancer first, but then as his individuality, his creativity, his uniqueness, and his voice became more apparent. I've commented before, but please watch some more of his! And not just songs like this, but his ballads as well. I love Goodbye, Soldier, and Flame of love in particular.

You're right that Criminal is about his relationship with the music industry and the mask he puts on as an idol. The public answer is "Stockholm Syndrome" but he's mentioned in the behind the scenes that it's more personal than that and he fought for this album and was part of its production all the way through to the MV's release, pulling an all nighter with the MV editor to make sure it's just right.

It is both in ENGLISH and KOREAN (8 different people recorded for those reports it seems) For the "destroy me more" part, in Korean the lyrics is "Do Mang Cho Jo" has 2 meanings. it is said as "Do Mang Cho Jo" (a split second gap after 'Do') and also as "Do Mang Cho Jo" (no gap) , the meanings can be either "run away(from me)" or "destroy me more"..... This was done deliberately (maybe to signify both the pursuer and the pursuit are him?)
