It's to loosen up his vocal range. I'm a singer and I can tell you that sometimes when someone has trouble singing in a lower (or higher) range, vocal coaches will advise to start speaking in a lower (or higher) tone to train the muscles in your vocal cords. It helps that person train and stretch out their vocal range.
