So happy to finally share the first of a series of videos about my journey as a Tagelharpa player! In this first part we will see the basics on the instrument, and how to apply (which) rosin. Subscribe so you don't miss the next video about tuning, bridge and bow position! I hope you will check out my music, since it implements my tagelharpa progressively as I learn to play it, but it's already strongly influenced by Nordic folk both vocally and in its overall soundscape.
You can easily find the rosin I use by searching for "D'Addario dark rosin" on Amazon in your country, but any other dark rosin is fine!
Special thanks to my amazing Patrons Allen Brasch, Anna Masoni, Chernabogue, Gin, Janet Wilson, Loukianos, Mind Waker, Mockingjay N7, Mr. Feral, Paper Coelacanth, Piano Game Knight, Ro Panuganti, Sauraen, and Yoshiaki Miyasaka for their support! 💜

It can be hard to apply a fresh, new block of rosin to a brand new bow. If your bow is still 'skating' over the strings even after numerous attempts you could try heating up the rosin a bit to soften it. Not smoking hot of course. 5 minutes in a 50°C oven should suffice.
@Psamathes
@Psamathes Жыл бұрын
Thank you, this is super useful advice! Will try it on my bow next time. Would it make sense to heat it with a lighter from a distance too?
@elricthebald870

@@Psamathes Oh I think it will. But you might scorch or burn it. I came to this solution last week in a desperate attempt as I struggled to get sound out of my self build tagalharpa. Somebody suggested quick, rapid strokes in order for the rosins surface to heat up by friction. It didn't work. But after a few minutes in the oven the rosin was softer and after a few strokes it started to squeak on the bow. At that point it started to coat the bow and I was able to get some decent sound. Now I just need to learn to play it.

@@elricthebald870 I absolutely see what you mean! I tried with a lighter and by placing it on my radiator. When the heat's too close and constant, the rosin breaks or starts cracking :( If I only quickly pass the lighter near it a few times, however, it slightly warms up without breaking though I don't think it gets to the point you described. I once saw it's possible to make liquid rosin, I'd love to look more into that too as the ultimate coating method!

Thank you so much! I'm about to publish a video specifically on how to find notes on your own instrument in the next couple of days. I can also make one showing myself tuning the tagelharpa and playing a couple of notes, it's a great suggestion for a future video in this series!

Great video! I have one for almost a year now and I can tell you: I have no idea what I am doing. I can tune it, I can rosin it, I can play it, but I have no idea where the notes are or how the scales work because the instrument isn't fretted. I know you can place your fingers down the string to make higher notes, but because I have zero perfect pitch I have no idea what note I am playing. I really need something like frets or tabs and because the taglharpa doesn't provide any I find it really hard to play. So if you figure out a way to make tabs or how the scale on a taglharpa works please do share it with us xD

I will definitely make a video on how I stay in tune when playing! I admit that I play by ear most of the time because it's quicker for me but I do use some tricks to not go out of tune as soon as I move my fingers ahahah Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it 💜

One way to learn notes on this instrument is to learn basic 4 and 5 note tetrachords that build all modes and scales. If you’re tuned in 4ths or 5ths than the positions for the finger position transfer easily from one string to the next. It’s not the traditional approach but it is really fun.
@Psamathes

I don't have a lot of music theory training so I tend to use visual cues along the instrument and distance between note positions 😅
@barefootarts737
@barefootarts737 2 жыл бұрын
@@Psamathes The tetrachords are intervals and not notes traditionally. So if you can sing songs (you’re using them), than this method would work well in my opinion. I have no theory training either. But it is the ‘gist’ of any-and-all folk traditions the world over.

Super Video,, from where can we get this kind of strings?
@Psamathes
@Psamathes 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! These strings are horse hair, in my case they just came in the instrument from the manufacturer. If you get a tagelharpa made, definitely ask about the strings material if you have a preference. I saw some also using nylon or cello strings which can be more easily found online though (for replacement purposes I mean)

Ah yeah horse hair strings are definitely more delicate, they also lose tuning quicker 😭 That's why I saw some manufacturers recommend or use nylon. Mine are horse hair for now, but once they break I might reconsider depending on how difficult it becomes to find replacements 😂
