Starburst, I think it was wonderful that you were able to return to the spot where you camped out and found out that it was indeed a mountain lion that had been outside your tent that night. It must have felt great to face that fear. I remember those videos so well, and the night you spent with your Mom (love her!) and seeing you cry - I had to cry myself with you - I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to get back on trail but you did it and your viewers were so happy for you! That’s my neighborhood. Black bears are not a concern. I chase them out of my yard all the time. They check the doors handles on the cars almost every night. They are just giant destructive raccoons. A pain in the butt. Moms with cubs get a bit agitated, stand up and huff. We have mom bears walk through regularly, teaching the cubs to break into trashcans cars and homes. I like seeing them in open spaces where they belong. Good backcountry food practices are important, but I’m not at all concerned about safety with black bears after 17 years and 100+ encounters with them. You have an exponentially higher chance of being killed by a drunk driver on the way to the trailhead than ever having a black bear attack. They come in all sorts of colors as well, from reddish cinnamon to deep glossy black. Nice vid!
