Day 4 of my Tahoe Rim Trail thru-hike: Fontanillis Lake to Lake Aloha.
Film date: Tuesday, August 4, 2020
I got a good night of sleep and was ready to hike to the top of Dick's Pass. It was such a beautiful and somewhat easy day, because we only needed to hike 10 miles to the stunning Lake Aloha.

Lake Aloha is simply amazing indeed. I hiked Dick's Pass, Gilmore Lake, Aloha(passing both Heather and Suzie lakes) and Clyde Lake, plus Grass Lake and Half Moon Lake all in August of this year and loved every mile of it.. I never had the problem with bugs at all so It's strange that you got bit up as much as you did, LOL. Awesome videos by the way.

Nothing like that feeling of getting over a pass, knowing the descent leads to an epic lake. I certainly loath mosquitoes, so I feel your uncomfortably annoying situation. btw peanut butter to block up the plumbing and cheese to unblock ... Coffee always helps me fill the cathole 😀 👍 - Blessings to clean feet again ❤ ✌ 👣

I was on that same trail in August 1963, on a 3-day solo hike out of Fallen Leaf Lake, just before I was to enlist in the U.S. Army. As I hiked over Dicks Pass, I could barely keep my poop inside, but I had run out of toilet paper. I had to wait until I was below Glen Alpine Springs before there was enough leafy vegetation to serve as my toilet paper. And it was especially embarrassing because I had hooked up with another solo hiker, at Fontanillis Lake. a very pretty young woman

Beautiful lake. I understand the great memories there. That tea cracks me up. Cuz I’m a tea drinker in general and usually brought my own to work cuz what was in the break room drawer was usually pretty dismal. Either the cheap stuff the office Mgr who wasn’t a tea drinker would get and whatever my coworkers would donate from their cupboards. Well one day we got a new Mgr and she was going through the break room drawers to get an idea what we liked and she found a box of Smoothe Moves tea. And she was like: is this a popular tea here????? I I was like: um no. It’s been here in this drawer for years. I don’t think anyone has touched it. Lol. So anytime I was in the break room and people started rummaging through the drawers and cupboards for snacks or tea we had the inside joke of: well you can always get a cup of smoothe moves. 😉

You certainly keep it real for us! The first time ever I went overnight camping was with two friends. Our tent was a 4-man tent with lots of holes. Two of us got eaten alive all night long by mosquitoes, but our one friend didn't have even one bite. We figured the reason was because he was so hairy the mosquitoes couldn't get through to his skin. So there is your solution - QUIT SHAVING and embrace the Hungarian in you. By the way, thanks for the Olympic synchronized swimming exhibition - I see a gold medal for you two in the future.

Great to see you again Starburst! I followed all your PCT videos and saw your great New Zealand honeymoon videos. It is nice to be back on trail, huh? Brother and I did manage 3 days 2 nights in the Three Sisters Wilderness in August. Hiked 6 miles north from the Irish/Taylor Trailhead and then bushwhacked up a steep hill to a nice little mountain lake. Relaxed and ate fresh fish (to supplement our freeze-dried food) for the two nights. Had great views from a rim near camp. On the way out, we passed several section hikers and also some thru-hikers. They were all very nice. It was a great time. Keep on hiking when you can and please thank Owen for his service. Stay safe. Don from Oregon.

The bears disappeared from the Lake Tahoe area from the late 1940s to the 1970s. I always slept out in the open on my hikes to the Lake Aloha region. And I always wore long sleeved shirts and jeans so the mosquitoes were not a big problem. There were some privately developed camping spots at the northern point of Lake Aloha, and some additional ones on a peninsular that jutted out eastward from its western shoreline. You had to pick your way over a rock field to get there; no trails.

I did some hiking about a month ago in the Wind River Range in Wyoming, and the terrain here really reminds me of what we had there: so many beautiful snow-melt lakes surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks, with wildflowers everywhere. Plus, lots of passes to go over! When you do the CDT, you will love the Winds when you finally get there. They are worth the wait!

Smooth Move is best taken at bedtime for a delightful Poop du Jour in the morning. And Whimsy, Vitamin B complex makes your blood bitter. If you take 1 or 2 a day, the moskas won't bite you. We used to take 2 a day in India to prevent the malaria moskas from biting us. When you go shopping, buy raisins and look for prunes nearby. Two prunes after dinner can help too. Prune juice gives me the most painful stomach aches tho, no juice! If you had a long sleeve flannel shirt on over the T , they would have a harder time biting. Ahead net - and Little Bee had a whole net suit. Not sure how that worked. Ask her.

I'm A+ and generally get less than half the bites that my 'O' type hiking partners have received. Have you and Dyana compared that factor, Starburst? I'm sure many other factors, possibly even the region you are hiking in, could make a difference. ??? Haven't asked any Skeeters about it yet! Too busy killin' em!

When I was on the PCT in 2017, I invented a perfect snack to help me keep my sh*t together. Take a whole wheat tortilla, spread some almond or peanut butter on it, lay five prunes in a line and dot each prune with a bit of sriracha sauce. Roll it up and it is delicious! Sweet and spicy. I called it the Sierra Pelona Explosion just to make people laugh whenever I was making one. I first had it in that ugly little mountain range between Agua Dulce and Hikertown.

Beautiful country. Those types of rocky trails argue to me a bit sturdier footwear. Ouch.

@@JenniferMabus Love the lighter footwear, but I am tending towards a middle approach - current go to are Salomon. Pretty light but a bit sturdier sole and footbox.

You have more mosquito bites because of your blood sugar. Your sweat has a small amount of sugar in it, and they are attracted to it. I have the same problem.

I really really hope you get to poop soon but not in the middle of the night. Pick a spot and dig a deep cathole just in case.
