I'm not sure about this, I find it better to work from an initial spontaneous reaction which is usually very appropriate in self defence, the body knows instinctively what to do. I get the point of training for appreciation of tai chi postures but it's a bit complex for self defence which is actually quite simple and instinctive as long as you can stay relaxed. The more you think, the slower and less relaxed you are, it's a classic martial arts mistake to stop and think rather than simply reacting instinctively and appropriately.

Tai Chi Cheshire The thinking is only done in training. You must train your understanding of the postures and of using space so that thought is unnecessary.

Totally agree. If one begins to think during a fight, the body stiffens. It becomes awkward and unbalanced. Then one already lost the fight
