when I grew up in the 70s and 80s nobody ever spoke of Tai Chi as a self defence or fighting skill. It was always a health excercise thing. Kung Fu was the fighting art so I wonder where this notion started. Lovely and graceful as a daily routine but hopefully the modern KZbin clips have prevented people from thinking this will help in any way in an altercation. The so called practitioners are destroyed in a minute or less with severe consequences by people with even minor actual training in a fighting skill.

No they are not. One or two examples on the internet does not represent every practitioner.

Absolutely will not work for self defense.

Interesting. Similar to Shotokai karate compared to Shotokan karate. I've practised both in my lifetime still don't fully understand the "softness" of Shotokai. I think Mitsusuki Harada demonstrates better than i could possibly attempt to explain. Whatever the martial art it is however, only as good as the practitioner. Wish i was young again so i could study your art. Love the videos.

It's actually the same action with Beng Chang in Ba Gua. The fingers seem pointed because the hand is relaxed while travelling and flattens on contact. It doesn't HAVE to flatten, of course - the fingers can stay extended for a finger strike to the eyes or throat. Like the old masters said, every inch of T'ai Chi or Ba Gua contains a technique - It just takes a few decades to work through the ramifications ....

In my experience it's not just the eyes and the throat even though they are viable targets. Tai Chi Chuan in the highest forms use the fingers for presser point attacks. It's very advanced and few people get to that point. The leading fingers are used as the set up for multiple pressure point strikes designed as a preliminary to the palm. Brush the knee is specific to center line attacks, and therefore, you use the pressure points along those lines to devastate your opponent. Combined with his forward motion you can deeply penetrate his or her pressure points that will fatally remove your opponent. This is why it's a high form and rarely taught because the timing, skill and morals of the person must be high.
