TAIG Lathe Motor Mounting & Test Cut

I just set mine up with the POS mis-drilled, wrong size particle board base TAIG provide in the US. I envy you the actual properly made steel baseplate.

Never reach down behind a lathe when it is running. That little lathe can still tear flesh up quite easily. Be careful and turn off before reaching for cut offs.

I like your idea to rest the motor on rubber. Maybe for easier belt tension adjustment you can replace the bolt and nut with a large thumb screw and for securing by hand a wing nut? Good job

Hi have you done any runout on a round shaft and putting a center hold for for another shaft inserted in first shaft and tighten by set screws??

I have found carbide tools ot be much worse than HSS - is this generally the case. It doesn’t seem to have the torque to put the kind of torque on the carbide likes. Is this normal or am I just used to big lathes and need get ease off a bit on the little fella?

Does your carbide tool have the same center height as the HSS? My guess would be that little lathe couldn't take more then like .010" per side on mild steel if that. It should do much better in aluminium. With those depths of cut it so needs the CNC conversion you mentioned. I'm enjoying this series I haven't seen much on the Taig.

What were you thinking?.....a single phase motor, no speed control possible......read up on 3 phase motors (common and cheap as dog poo) and a 2.2Kw VFD.

Thanks for the comment, a 550w Sewing machine motor to be honest. I was under the impression that 3phase motors required a 3phase power supply or is that the purpose of the VFD? Also another option is DC motor which can be PWMed by inexpensive controllers

@@FuturefabOrgUk A VFD plugs into the single phase mains supply and gives you a variable 3 phase output. Used 3 phase motors are almost give away at a metal scrapyards or quite cheap if you buy new. If you already have a DC motor then that is the way to go but a 3/4 hp 3,000 rpm 3 phase motor coset me A$100 and a 2.2Kw VFD on Amazon cost me A$80. You get the benefit of setting parameters to get slow or fast speed up and fast deceleration etc., very versatile. I practically gave all my single phase motors away once I went down the 3 phase route.
