Interesting to see. Pity the video quality isn't the best, but you can get a feel for the directness of traditional Okinawan style Karate. Sad to think of how much true martial art knowledge, has been lost over the years. Thank you for uploading.

Trained with him in the 90's when he came to Montreal. I was a lot younger and very impressed with his skills. In the video you see some of it. Thanks for sharing...nice souvenir

Amazing this still exists. My father in law was in Oyata's Shin Shu Ho and is at 6th Dan. I was about 18 when I started training in this art but I did not take it as seriously as I should have and sadly never went very far. By the time I got serious he lost his interest to teach. Later, our relationship suffered and his health is not good. I can say with the utmost honesty that this defensive style is the real deal, the lineage is pure and it can be very brutal if needed. Kudos to his demo partner in this video because this stuff hurts even at slow speed and there is not much one can do to resist it. Disclaimer: the big truth I found with this style is that it is super effective as a defensive art. You seriously can trust it but there is a catch...you must train properly and it takes thousands of reps to learn this stuff as reactionary. You cannot expect to take a few classes and be good. I promise this is not a waste of time, money or training when trained properly and with dillegence. Fyi, Dillman tried to steal Oyata's brand and claim it for himself. Dillman is a hack. Do not trust him.

Braven Kirok Ooooh! Preach it man! I wish there were more like you to be vocal about true martial arts. I swear I really want to write a book and interview folks like you and your Father.

Braven Kirok I guess I am really about preserving wisdom (My Grandfather is 93 and says some profound things). I feel like when we meet people so passionate it deserves a retelling.

I still have my original copy of this VHS tape from 1984. It has suffered in quality over the decades too, but not as much as this! All the techniques presented are real. No nonsense. This is a real self defense art. It is about fighting, not showing off for judges. Also, it is NOT the black and brown belt Katas as titled. It is all of the 12 open-hand Katas required for the Black Belt test in Kansas City, for the now defunct Zenkoku Ryukyu Kempo Karate Kabudo Rengo Kai assc. The belt belt Katas are/were all weapons.

I was a student under Taika Oyata's system. It was a great system of fighting. When we got to brown belt, I remember we had to spar hard and continuously. I remember my instructor saying point sparring was not real, and only going live, and feeling the hit, would one understand a real fight. I moved away and ended up joining Muay Thai, which is my second love. Now, I wish I could find a school of Ryu-te to join again :D I loved that style.

Completely correct. However, with most of the originals gone, and very few still teaching the art the way it was meant to be taught, this is the only way for some of us to learn/re-learn. In the age of social media, spreading information is the best way to combat misinformation.

It's not worth watching. Its degraded so badly you would be better off, and the arts honored, were you to take it down and fix it if possible, or take it down and leave it down. Replace it with something worthwhile, sever that emotional attachment you have to the video and replace it. Good luck.
