at 65 years of age just bought our first Harley, a 2019 Softail Heritage because I just wanted one, after almost 50 yrs of riding. Yes it is not the nimblest best handling machine I have owned and yes I will gladly slow down to let faster riders around me. Lets ride at our own pace and respect each other. Stay safe.

I'm like you except I've always ridden HD except once when I was 17 and friend's minibikes and dirtbikes when I was 14 and15. I fell in love with the 2018 Deluxe with all its chrome and bought it for my 66 BD. I don't like to ride much over the speed limit as I realize my potential shortcomings due to age. Whenever I see faster-riding motorcycles and even automobiles, I immediately pull over at the first safe opportunity.

5 years ago at 65 I was stopped at a red light and after 50+ years of riding I told the wife, “I’m done, time to get off”. Rode to the bike shop where I bought it and sold it back to the dealer, walked home. Picked up my gear at the shop the next day and took it to a thrift store. Don’t miss it one bit. My son asked me if I wanted to take his new bike out, said….nope couldn’t pay me to ride it.

To people who say BMW was riding HD's ass, I say he was only (politely) showing he was faster (no honking, no flashing the high beam, no showing his front wheel...) ALL HD HAD TO DO WAS WAVE HIM BY (which was probably the coutesy BMW was hopping for). And they'd both have a more enjoyable ride after. But NO !!! Instead of taking 1 second to alllow a clean pass, HD PICKED UP THE PACE !!! (Ego ?) HD was using the full lane, on and off the brakes, while BMW was not even breathing hard and not even using his brakes ! So people who say BMW was "racing", I'd reply HD was A LOT closer to "the edge" then BMW. (which is not a racer but an adventure bike btw) So seeing HD would never let him by, BMW waited for a rare short straight at the dragon, and did a super clean and safe pass (even if double line), and it took 2 seconds to complete it. HD reminded me of people going the speed limit in the left lane of a highway, and behing pissed when someone passes them on the right because "they are going the speed limit so no one should pass them".

There is ZERO corellation between "experience" and skill. I have encountered a number of Harley-Davidson operators who claim to have been "riding" for 50 years, who don't actually know how to ride at all. Once they figured out how to get it rolling without stalling the engine, they just stopped learning. What they mistake for an advancing skill set, is in reality just them becoming more and more comfortable over time, with not knowing how to ride.

I think the Harley rider was more upset with himself. Had he let you pass earlier everyone wins (both enjoy the rest of their rides). His mind was set to ignore you but that clearly didn't work for him. If traffic bothers you, you may want to try times that aren't as busy like early in the morning on weekdays. Remember the Dragon is a public road and a lot more dangerous than most realize. People can stop in blind curves, or even be walking on the road to pick up something they dropped. If you were to crash you may not be found for hours/days. Always a good ride when you and your bike return in good shape.

It couldn’t be simpler: if a faster bike (or car) approaches from behind, look for the next pullout. When you see it, throw your turn signal on. The overtaking rider will pass in a couple seconds as you reduce speed slightly and swing ever so briefly into the pullout. If there are multiple faster riders, slow a little more as you acknowledge their appreciative “Thanks, Bro!” waves. Slide back out and proceed at your desired pace, content in your knowledge that you just maximized EVERYBODY’S enjoyment.

When they come behind a car moving slower than them the ride up his ass and rev their engines and make gestures when he finally moves. All the while I'm right behind them waiting to get by and they won't move over in the lane or use a pull off and they will hammer down as hard as possible on the few short straights. So apparently they go the perfect speed. If u are slower u are a jerk that needs to pull over but if u want to go faster u are an asshole on a crotch rocket who is going to fast. Mind u it's not all of them. Many are cool and polite and will move when the opportunity arrives. Absent a law stating otherwise, the Harley rider had no obligation to pull over for faster traffic. Sure it is frustrating, but the rider ahead may be riding at his maximum comfort level of speed for whatever reason. The faster rider had two choices to deal with the situation that would not have involved crowding the other rider in his own lane and possibly causing him to crash: either ignore the twin yellow lines and take upon yourself the risk of moving into the oncoming lane to go around him, or take one of the turnouts that you find so inviting and wait for him to leave the area at his own pace.

Being legal (and a major douche) or being right (and a moral member of the human race) are often not the same thing. Realistically, only 50% of all vehicles (cars, trucks, bikes) actually use the many pull-offs at Deal's Gap. 2 decades ago, most visitors kinda knew the courtesy-rules of that road, but no more. My rule is that if the slower traffic fails to use the 3rd avail pull-off, then I use the next one and give them (and any other closeby sameway traffic) 30sec to 60 sec to get ahead instead of spoiling so much of my run. I always visit The Dragon with enough time to forfeit at least one or two runs to traffic and still run 2 or 3 passes from the Motor Lodge to the Scenic Overlook.

I understand both sides of the argument. This same thing happened to me recently on TOD and I considered posting a video, but chose not to. They legally do not have to let you pass BUT it is a commonly held courtesy to wave a faster rider around when it's safe to do so, or to pull over. In my recent experience I thought he was a prick and he surely felt the same about me- two competing egos. The HD guy in front of me was pushing hard to keep from being passed (ego) and began clearly riding outside of his comfort zone (with a passenger). Watching my footage I concluded that I should have just pulled over (nope, ego) and let him get down the road before he and his girlfriend got hurt. Had he crashed I would not be legally at fault, but morally, yes. Next time I will pull over if a slower rider doesn't feel the need to be courteous- that's their right. TOD is an overrated scene for people to go for bragging rights, t-shirts, and bumper stickers. There are so many better sections of blacktop in the region with fewer riders and police patrols. The real problem with the Dragon is not slower riders who refuse to yield, it is riders pushing past their comfort zone who are unable to stay in their lane (cruisers and sport bikes). Forget ego games. Encountering that will kill you.

Passing another bike in the same lane is dangerous when you are unfamiliar with the rider. You don't know his skill level and he doesn't know yours. You wouldn't ride axle up with a stranger so it's safe to assume you wouldn't want another bike in your lane. That is likely the reason for the reluctance to let you pass especially on a curvy road like that. Some riders dont have the skill level to maintain lane position in a curve and he was probably unfamiliar with the road as the dragon brings many tourists. Not saying he was in the right but you have to consider all the possibilities before you tear a stranger down.

Passing another biker in the same lane is very dangerous, even if you know who you're passing. I was riding down I5 in CA with three good buddies once, and we were jockeying around quite a bit. I decided to get on it and unintentionally pulled a bit of a wheelie. At the same time, unknown to me, my buddy coming up from behind went flying by me in my lane. His right hand grip passed under my left hand grip, but had I not accidentally pulled a wheelie, we would have hit and both of us could have ended up sliding down the pavement. I've been riding for over 40 years and letting faster vehicles (motorcycles or others) pass you (slowing down, moving to the right, wave by) is common courtesy, and BMW gave him plenty of opportunity to do so. Why was HD PICKING UP THE PACE not to be passed/make the pass harder ? HD was riding at his limit while BMW was not even breathing hard... BMW try to give HD the opportunity to let him by, which HD did not do, THEN waited for a proper safe passing spot, which are pretty inexistant on the dragon, especially if the guy being passed tries his best to make it harder.

Try living here in OH. So many of the riders carryover their car mentality to riding a bike. They'll behave as though a large rectangle of metal extends 3 feet to either side, and about 8 feet to the front and back. They would love to share the road, if only there was enough space. Watching the video, it's easy to get the sense that the Harley rider was indulging himself by blocking your path, and became frustrated as he realized he was powerless to continue doing so. I read the other comments, and I couldn't get enough of the meter maids whining about your overtake. It seemed safe and effective to me.

Riding a bike is not just for the speed. Sometimes it is just for the cruise. You could have easily passed more than once. You became the annoying overly geared up mosquito. I have been riding for over 50 years. Riding fast is just one of the fun things about going for a ride. Having some guy follow me for miles is not enjoyable. Turnouts are for trucks and RV's. If I had more than one bike behind me I would probably use one. Aside from that. Take 3 seconds and pass him.

Truth is most HD riders are intimidated by sport bike riders. I own both, I enjoy both-- different bike for different applications. The only HD guy tho is threatened by sport bikes that's why you get these different behaviors. They're extra intimidated tho by a skilled sport bike rider that also rides a cruiser because the extended skills from track and twisty shredding make you a much better rider on the large heavy cruiser.... which riding very well of course takes skill-- seeing a stunt rider for example in a film doing difficult manuevers with a big heavy bagger is amazing and all the Sons of Anarchy wannabe dentist can do is putt around on it. But the cruiser is not meant for a technical twisty road I wouldn't take mine on the dragon that's stupid.

yesterday we were a group of sport bike riders who caught up on a very slow team of HD riders, last one on a trike licking the yellow. We were behind them for a good 15 minutes, they did not give two F's and road in the middle of the road not letting anyone pass safely, so when the opportunity came, we throttled up to pass them. I had to get in-between them when a big rig came towards us, man did they get pissed. Fingers up, pistol hand gestures. What is wrong with these people, any normal individual would ride on the side of the road letting us pass in a safe manner, but no, not these idiots. They own the road on their 50hp 900 ibs machines, no riding gear except the huge chain holding their empty wallet after investing in the fake lifestyle machine.
