... for some reason, many Ohio plated riders just wouldn't move to one side or use the pull-offs. This guy got particularly upset as I passed ... he saw me for miles but hung left for some reason.
Safe riding, and let's all be nice to one another out there - James

at 65 years of age just bought our first Harley, a 2019 Softail Heritage because I just wanted one, after almost 50 yrs of riding. Yes it is not the nimblest best handling machine I have owned and yes I will gladly slow down to let faster riders around me. Lets ride at our own pace and respect each other. Stay safe.

I'm like you except I've always ridden HD except once when I was 17 and friend's minibikes and dirtbikes when I was 14 and15. I fell in love with the 2018 Deluxe with all its chrome and bought it for my 66 BD. I don't like to ride much over the speed limit as I realize my potential shortcomings due to age. Whenever I see faster-riding motorcycles and even automobiles, I immediately pull over at the first safe opportunity.

5 years ago at 65 I was stopped at a red light and after 50+ years of riding I told the wife, “I’m done, time to get off”. Rode to the bike shop where I bought it and sold it back to the dealer, walked home. Picked up my gear at the shop the next day and took it to a thrift store. Don’t miss it one bit. My son asked me if I wanted to take his new bike out, said….nope couldn’t pay me to ride it.

I think the Harley rider was more upset with himself. Had he let you pass earlier everyone wins (both enjoy the rest of their rides). His mind was set to ignore you but that clearly didn't work for him. If traffic bothers you, you may want to try times that aren't as busy like early in the morning on weekdays. Remember the Dragon is a public road and a lot more dangerous than most realize. People can stop in blind curves, or even be walking on the road to pick up something they dropped. If you were to crash you may not be found for hours/days. Always a good ride when you and your bike return in good shape.

It couldn’t be simpler: if a faster bike (or car) approaches from behind, look for the next pullout. When you see it, throw your turn signal on. The overtaking rider will pass in a couple seconds as you reduce speed slightly and swing ever so briefly into the pullout. If there are multiple faster riders, slow a little more as you acknowledge their appreciative “Thanks, Bro!” waves. Slide back out and proceed at your desired pace, content in your knowledge that you just maximized EVERYBODY’S enjoyment.

Absent a law stating otherwise, the Harley rider had no obligation to pull over for faster traffic. Sure it is frustrating, but the rider ahead may be riding at his maximum comfort level of speed for whatever reason. The faster rider had two choices to deal with the situation that would not have involved crowding the other rider in his own lane and possibly causing him to crash: either ignore the twin yellow lines and take upon yourself the risk of moving into the oncoming lane to go around him, or take one of the turnouts that you find so inviting and wait for him to leave the area at his own pace.

ALL HD HAD TO DO WAS WAVE HIM BY (which was probably the coutesy BMW was hopping for). And they'd both have a more enjoyable ride after. But NO !!! Instead of taking 1 second to alllow a clean pass, HD PICKED UP THE PACE !!! (Ego ?) HD was using the full lane, on and off the brakes, while BMW was not even breathing hard and not even using his brakes ! So people who say BMW was "racing", I'd reply HD was A LOT closer to "the edge" then BMW. (which is not a racer but an adventure bike btw) So seeing HD would never let him by, BMW waited for a rare short straight at the dragon, and did a super clean and safe pass (even if double line), and it took 2 seconds to complete it. HD reminded me of people going the speed limit in the left lane of a highway, and behing pissed when someone passes them on the right because "they are going the speed limit so no one should pass them".

Passing another bike in the same lane is dangerous when you are unfamiliar with the rider. You don't know his skill level and he doesn't know yours. You wouldn't ride axle up with a stranger so it's safe to assume you wouldn't want another bike in your lane. That is likely the reason for the reluctance to let you pass especially on a curvy road like that. Some riders dont have the skill level to maintain lane position in a curve and he was probably unfamiliar with the road as the dragon brings many tourists. Not saying he was in the right but you have to consider all the possibilities before you tear a stranger down.
@JamesScottSi
@JamesScottSi 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't tear anyone down, and at the time I passed, it was parking lot speeds ... 15mph, and after hugging the double yellow, he clearly moved right so I could pass left. For whatever reason, he was put off by having to do this. And if your skill level isn't at a level to maneuver your bike safely to the right, then you have no business being on the road, let alone US129.

@BatmanRydin 5 жыл бұрын
That was not intended as an attack on you. Just a little insight from a fellow biker to explain to the cage drivers commenting on this video. A PSA if you will. I agree that if you are lacking in skill you shouldn't be attempting a ride like that. But it is as I said earlier. This is one of the major tourist attractions in the biker world so people of all measures of skill ride it. That is why bikes go down so often there.

Passing another biker in the same lane is very dangerous, even if you know who you're passing. I was riding down I5 in CA with three good buddies once, and we were jockeying around quite a bit. I decided to get on it and unintentionally pulled a bit of a wheelie. At the same time, unknown to me, my buddy coming up from behind went flying by me in my lane. His right hand grip passed under my left hand grip, but had I not accidentally pulled a wheelie, we would have hit and both of us could have ended up sliding down the pavement. Don't pass someone in their lane unless you know them and they know you are passing.

My first time there, I was behind a cruiser and perfectly content to stay there as I got used to the road. I was concentrating on the road, not so much whether someone was behind me. I would not say we were going particularly slow and definitely at the posted limits. Suddenly and Aprilia rider decided to pass both of us, which I frowned upon. If you don't let me know you're back there, I don't know to let you pass. This is particularly so when there is someone in front of me. And, to make it clear, absolutely pulled over to let people pass when I knew they'd caught up to me. I get there are "rules" for The Dragon, but I don't get how I'm supposed to put them before the rules of riding (unless one needs to change lanes or is stopped at an intersection, one's concentration should be directed down range).

Try living here in OH. So many of the riders carryover their car mentality to riding a bike. They'll behave as though a large rectangle of metal extends 3 feet to either side, and about 8 feet to the front and back. They would love to share the road, if only there was enough space. Watching the video, it's easy to get the sense that the Harley rider was indulging himself by blocking your path, and became frustrated as he realized he was powerless to continue doing so. hello - true ... I was slingshotting there for a bit ... slow down, then speed up, slow down, then speed up ... all the while hopeful one could do the seemingly effortless thing and simply slide right for 5 seconds. It all worked out and we got to see the bird.

Scary thing is that HD rides had no idea you are behind him the whole time, it's obviously beginner rider preoccupied with curves in front , so when you passed him he got scared....

You say “no reason to rage because you are slow” & “be courteous”. Well,,, -the double yellow line means no passing -passing in the same lane next to other vehicle is unsafe & rude -many riders/drivers in the world with various skills, you may need to be patient like others were for us starting out -you are on the Tail of the Dragon, it is a huge go-to destination, you can expect many other folks there BMW GSA, KTM 690 & H-D Road King rider

Riders of HDs seem to think that because their bikes don't corner well, neither do others..... They seem so wrapped up in the brand that they delulde themselves about them in the most amazing way.

Remember this is a "public" road. People use it everyday to get back n forth to work, medical visits, shopping, making deliveries, going boating, going camping, etc. Look on the map, there is no other road to get across in that area. The locals who ride the roads all the time can be up on you quick and pass you before you know what's happened and that pisses a lot of folks off. How many other two lane roads people pull over for you to pass. It could be their first time through and don't know to take the pull offs out of courtesy and legally, they don't have too. Speed limit is 30mph. A few years ago, the governor of North Carolina wanted to shut down the road but the locals educated him on the tourist money it generates. I found it best over the years to avoid the road altogether.

I've ridden the Dragon on several occasions. Although I ride Harleys and have Ohio plates, I have no issue waving faster riders through. None of my Harleys can handle those turns like my K1200GT. No sense in holding up others...

Given how all over the road he was I think he was beyond his abilities. A couple times he was over the divider. Not good

I agree with your assessment of his abilities but actually his tires were over the divider more than a couple of times, the rest of the time when he was on an outside curve if his tires were on the correct side his head wasn't.

There is a speed limit on the Dragon, if the rider ahead of you is enjoying his ride, why cant you enjoy yours, no other rider has to speed to meet your needs,

OK question: To let someone pass, do you actually pull off the road in one of the turn outs? Or do you ease as far right as possible, and slow up, let them squirt past on a straight? Whats the etiquette?
@JamesScottSi
@JamesScottSi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert … me & most other motorcyclist I encounter scoot far right & waive the faster rider by. Cars, trucks & some motorcyclist wait to use the pull off. My opinion, the other person just do what is safe. And lastly & most infrequently my experience is this person who chooses to stay left & not use the pull offs.

I ease to the right to let them pass, or use a turnout if it’s handy. Live and let live is not that difficult.

This type of stuff is part of the reason why I avoid the Gap (US 129). I'd rather ride the surrounding roads like Wyah or Cherohala where there is zero drama or butthurt to be found.

One has to make allowances for the "Harley " thing. There's a good percentage of these folks that couldn't ride a train but the desire to appear as a badass outweighs any impulse of self preservation. I do adore the costumes tho, so cute.

Oh most of them are bought for image for sure. They are great at soaking up miles comfortably in style and with a great exhaust note.... that's it. But these clowns will do stuff like take them on a popular sport bike shred road and expect to not have people wanting to pass? Sons of Anarchy replica vest included.

I am not sure how it is where you are but in NZ you shouldn't overtake another rider in the same lane, it is considered rude.

To me,it looked like a dangerous pass and that's what upset him. You nearly ran him off the road. If you are genuinely that much faster, then just overtake him when you get the chance. There's no way anyone should have to pull over for someone faster. It's a public road. Faster riders don't 'own' it.
