Yup. Engine failure in all phases of flight is one of the most practised things when training for a PPL. Good captaincy to keep the passenger calm (he was telling himself a bit too but did well). Anyone know a link to the full video?

@@matthewspry4217 okay, armchair expert. You try noticing a random warning light under immense task load while following takeoff and climb procedures. Chances are you won't. You'd be heavily focused on airspeed, altitude, heading, and attitude displays, as well as communicating with the tower and performing visual traffic observations.

@@adamk203 I am a pilot, and he should have noticed the flashing red light because a good pilot would be scanning instruments. His workload wasn't heavy on that takeoff. He performed the emergency landing well and told his passenger not to worry about the steep descent in a calm voice. I would fly with the guy anytime.

When you have an in flight emergency the first thing you always do is still fly the plane , then navigate to a safe place (while still flying the plane) and the communicate your problem (while still flying the plane) . He never panicked and stopped flying the plane.

If you’ve ever been to the Nut Tree airport you would know that although the terrain looks flat and open, there are very limited places to land. That said, if and when you learn to fly you will realize they did not have enough altitude to be choosy and gliding to relative safety is an old myth spread by non-pilots.

From a helicopter maint. person that has dealt with a tail rotor strike.....what a nightmare!!! Not only did we change the tail rotor.....also required changing of the tailrotor gearbox and tail drive shafts....the intermediate gearbox .... and ALL the drive shaft and couplings from the intermediate to the main transmission including the main transmission. (Sudden stoppage) Extremely expensive, however, I suppose prevention of later problems, it's a small price to pay.

I had a similar incident around Nut tree (KVCB). I was flying with a passenger at about 5,500 from KLHM to Half moon bay, and had RPM oscillations just over travis AFB, managed to descend and S weave into Nut Tree. Turned out to be contamination in the fuel lines. We drained the fuel, pumped new stuff through, and took off to return back to KLHM without any issues.

Helicopter pilot here. If you have that much uncommanded-yaw on your pickup you're doing it wrong. If he'd corrected for the yaw the tail rotor would be nowhere near the fence.

I used to be the Chief Flight Doctor for that company - that tail rotor strike could have been deadly!! The hospital looks like Sunninghill, just north of Johannesburg. In the last clip you can hear a toddler screaming - its ears would have been experiencing troubles equalising air pressure.

Helicopters are a circle, they rotor disc is the same size no matter which direction the fuselage is pointing. You can land on the H in any orientation.

I'm curious to find out how many flying hours the helicopter pilot had on their Resume when this "Accident" happened. I'm absolutely not a pilot but it seems to me in a rather "crowded area" as this helicopter was sitting before takeoff, the logical move would have been up and then rotate the bird. He might not have been able to go forward, due to airspace restrictions, or cables in the flight path etc, hence the need to rotate on the ground when he had air cushion effect.

The helicopter was not centered on the landing pad at liftoff. The pilot should have centered the craft over the pad, before rotating. This is classic, lack of situational awareness on the pilot. This has nothing to do with airspace restrictions. The primary reasons for rotating the craft after liftoff, is because of wind direction, & constricted LZs sometimes only have 1 way in & 1 way out.

As a helicopter driver, it amazes me how often i see pilots simply lose situational awareness of the T/R, this being the second Medivac chopper that drifted into an object. If you’re going to do a clearing turn, try to pivot around the T/R while keeping it stationary. Once you start wondering off(especially in confined areas, you’re inevitably going to smack it, and cause major damage. Some of the newer 407’s even have T/R cameras to prevent this albeit, this could be an older model?

That was the clip that scared me the most. That is a medivac helicopter and they clips the fence on take off... Situational awareness is need upmost at these critical moments. Great job putting it back down safely. Hope the rescue operation went smoothly once they did get support in the air

@@psalm2forliberty577 Blades themselves somewhere in the order of $3000-$9000 (after market, don't know exact OEM prices) for a pair, say 4 mechanics to work on it paid at $40 an hour and about 3 hours to complete adds close to another $500, then any other overheads and parts that may need to be replaced, could be looking at upwards of $50k-$100k

@@Yonkage-ik5qb First there was almost no wind (look at the tree leaves), second a helicopter pilot is not "pushed toward the fence" whatever is the wind. I was a helicopter pilot and we are used to manage the wind while hovering, not a big deal. He just rotated the helicopter too soon (lack of situation awareness, that's it)

I’ve never flown that aircraft before so I can’t say what that red light is for but in the traffic pattern, you’re supposed to be looking outside the aircraft. I counted six seconds from when the video started to when the knew there was a problem. Six seconds of not looking inside at the panel is quite common.

I watched a medivac 206L back over a fence, put the tail rotor past the fence, it he had 1 ft verticle clearance. He hovered there 45 seconds then left. He never knew that it happened until i told him later, and he called me a liar. BTW I ran the other way before the possible wreck. Before video phones.
