I was on a flight a couple weeks back landing in MSP and the pilot said the winds were swirling so the landing will be bumpy. We never touched on the first approach and the pilot came on saying winds were creating a stronger ground effect than usual where the plane wants to float as it gets closer to the runway. The 2nd landing attempt was rather smooth. I do fly a lot so it wasn’t my first time I’ve been on a plane that aborted landing, but many had a look of worry on their face.

Hard to say for certain because of camera angle. But it looks like the aircraft was about to depart the left side of the runway, which may be why the pilot chose to get airborne again. Notice the slight right bank just after liftoff. Hard to be critical of the go around decision until it's you at the controls in those conditions.

I would say you are correct. The GA seems odd, as they had more than enough pavement. (22 is 11,000 FT long) The possible runway excursion off the left side would have been devastating. When there is any doubt, hit TOGA and fly it. You know the plane flies, you don't know if it will stop, or in this case stay on the runway.

A220 skipper here : the flare was initiated a bit too high, the pilots corrected nose down a bit too much and firmly contacted with the runway. Plane was unstable and they decided to do a go around. The plane was in a low energy state and the pilot rotated too soon. The speed being too low and the pitch too high, the tail came close to touching. During the go around The plane veered to the left and the left wheel came very close to the runway edge. Was a hard approach for sure and a good decision to go around. The low energy go around is a very tricky manoeuvre and is often the cause of many repeats in the Sim during pilot qualification training

Scott, I really appreciate the captioning you did, and the slow motion replay. The comments by other pilots who were flying into MSP that day helped a lot, too. The winds down the slot where the Minnesota merges with the Mississippi can be really interesting. if they were down to one runway, things must have been very challenging. Runway 22's approach is over wealthy neighborhoods and they don't use it much.

this is why we have ADM and practice go arounds. Cpt knew that first attempt was impossible, I would assume due to either some wind shear or ground effect he was not aware of. He got his airplane off the runway, as he should’ve, and then shot a perfect approach and an excellent landing because he was prepared to work with his airplane a little. Great job sir!
@StraightNoChaser86

Hello Everyone! A lot of terrible takes on this video, here's my terrible take... MSP was using Runway 22 that day. Why? It was 30 gusting to 50 Kts+ making normal landing runways ineligible due to crosswind limits. What you saw near the end was a the effects of a gust ending during a pretty terrible time. Airliners will usually apply a gust factor (Up to 20 kts!) depending on a formula applied before landing, but a significant loss of headwind at this phase is nearly impossible to account for. Why did they elect to go around after touchdown? Well by the time they lifted off the ground the left main was nearly off the runway, it was probably the safer option. Why did it take so long for them to lift off after initiating a go around? As you can see, the ground spoilers deployed when the weight on wheel sensors indicated the plane was on the ground. Initiating a go around retracts those, the plane is unlikely to be flyable until they retract fully. You can see them retract, then the plane lifts off. Additionally, a jet engine takes a second to get Full Thrust from an idle thrust scenario. Normally Jet engines will have a slightly elevated thrust setting to maintain approach speed, so when you apply TOGA thrust, it comes pretty quick. Having reduced the throttle to idle for the flare, the engines likely took some time to provide full thrust. As for the overall technique....probably at the limits of the pilots abilities and a little task saturation to boot. The plane did not react how the pilot expected because this scenario is much different than that of a normal go around or take off. Overall a safe outcome during a very difficult approach. The full video shows a normal landing on the second attempt.

@theguy6044
@theguy6044 Жыл бұрын
@@jenniferAdamek Where the heck are you getting that from? From this short clip the aircraft was stable. Seemed to be an nose down overcorrection which is against training for any landing. The first flare just seemed like he dumped the nose down, can't exactly see why but it looks too aggressive to be a gust. Not sure what Delta's go around training specifies but he touched down well before the touch-down zone so if he decided to focus on the centerline and stabilizing the nose, to me that would have been a safer option considering he almost had a runway excursion from deviating from the center line with such a nose high pitch and with spoilers deployed.

Damn, there must have been some wind on that attempt. Or a really strong ground effect. The pilot was constantly correcting for the motion of the airplane. Either way, an excellent example of why pilots have to practice touch-and-go landings. And notice that the second attempt was absolutely perfect-the first attempt was almost certainly aborted due to wind.

The decision to go around in this instance I feel was necessary, given the pure fact that the aircraft was so far left of centerline, this could’ve easily been an LOC incident. The grass was quickly approaching on the left main…peak pucker factor for the crew
@ADAMBUFFOLINO12
@ADAMBUFFOLINO12 2 жыл бұрын
For those wondering why the flight crew didn’t just go ahead and land… Jet engines do not immediately respond to thrust lever movements in the same way a propeller aircraft does. When thrust levers are moved forward from an idle position, there is a period of time that the engine “spools up”. There is perhaps a three to five second lag time for engine response. During this landing, the crew likely made the determination that the landing sequence was unsafe at about five feet off the ground (just around the time they went to idle thrust). They pushed the thrust levers forward to initiate the go-around, however because of the spool up time, they need to hold the deck angle at around ten degrees to avoid a tail strike because the engines are not yet producing adequate thrust for climb. This crew likely pitched up beyond the deck limit before they verified ground clearance. Crews are taught to make a decision to go around, add thrust, pitch to eight to ten degrees nose up, accept ground contact, and continue go around. Ground contact occurs because of spool up time required for engine response. The safest course of action is continue decisively with go around.

I call BS, when you land and get weight on wheels, the spoilers come up on most planes, and they came up on this one if you look closely..that was almost 7 seconds on the ground the lag time is not that long. That was a late go around, or a take off at that point…Why ride a with your nose in the air for that long. Also 10 degrees nose up may work in the air but, on the ground that tail will come close to the ground (A321, 737-900) you are getting a tail strike…

Since the spoilers automatically retract once the throttles are advanced we can tell when they push the throttles forward by watching the spoilers. In this case the spoilers don't retract until less than a second before they lift off. This means that they didn't push the throttles forward until just before they left the ground. That's a LONG time to be decelerating on the ground before going around, even though they were about to depart the side of the runway. They must have been on the very edge of the envelope when they left the ground without the engines being spooled up all the way yet.

@@luftmensch435 That is a good point. I have no license in this particular aircraft but from what I hear the pitch up moment when the spoilers are deployed is nil. Also, if you look at the video replay in slow motion you will see when the aircraft pitches up and hits the tail/almost hits the tail, the spoilers are still deployed indicating that the engines had not yet spooled up. As soon as they got the engines spooled up the spoilers would have retracted.

I am not typed on this particular aircraft but every jet I have flown has an auto retract function on the spoiler system for just this instance. As soon as you push the TOGA (Take off Go Around) button the throttles advance and the spoilers will automatically retract. It looks like to me they tried to go around without advancing the throttles initially and that is why they were slow to liftoff. Just before the (almost tail strike) you can see the spoilers still deployed.

The flare sucked regardless, but I think some gains and losses may have been a contributing factor.

@@kabaddiify Not necessarily. This event will more than likely generate a good deal of (electronic) “paperwork”. Aircraft of Major airlines have event data recorders that regularly send data back to HQ for analysis to teams with acronyms like FOQA or FDAP. Flight Operations Quality Assurance or Flight Data Analysis Program teams establish acceptable parameters such as pitch attitude at touchdown and pitch attitude at liftoff among many many others. If an aircraft triggers an “event” such as this, where the pitch attitude at liftoff has exceeded a pre-established limit, the FOQA team will get the data that the aircraft recorded, de-identity the crew so punitive actions from the company don’t take place, and the pilot side of the team will reach out to the crew to understand their perspective of how the event transpired. The data from the aircraft is quite detailed and contains the aircraft’s indicated airspeed, rate of descent, configuration, threshold crossing height, engine fan rpm, commanded throttle position and even the amount of force applied to the flight controls etc... The goal of of FOQA is to get everyone standardized in procedures to minimize risk of mishaps (such as tailstrikes) from occurring. If this event was not due to the crew not following standard procedures, the airline can change their procedures to prevent or lessen the risk of a tailstrike occurring again.

I would say quite a controversial decision to go-around, IMHO. Judging by the video, they dropped the nose when the flare started for some reason (gusts, WS etc... whatever), but the landing itself was OK, they DIDN'T EVEN BOUNCE. No doubt it was a positive touchdown (or even a hard landing), but still ACCEPTABLE. IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, rudder is applied to the left after touchdown, that's why they veered off to the edge of the RWY while trying to recover (why?). Runway is dry, they could have maintained the runway centerline, that's for sure. I'm not accusing anyone, just sharing my thoughts. Good job anyway.

Dumb pilot, even with increased clearance and knowledge of the tail strike attitude he did or almost did, he did correct appropriately (not dumb) and then went on to exaggerate some more, he's lucky those planes are as powerful as the pilots are dumb. Tbh when pilots are taking off they tend to exaggerate how fast they pull up too, extra strain on the plane and they're already with the stupid flaps. Honestly, especially these new bois have all the runway and abundant power to take off without flaps in any load situation and i bet without the retracted tail design, maybe then they'll take off twice as natural, by being efficient too without those flaps pulling you back.. maybe someone will prove me right, i don't have flight simulator.

@@Tigers9596 well imo and I’m not a pilot, but I kinda know that when you land you can keep direction of the plane with rudders. They landed on the center of runway but it looks like the pilot wasn’t on the rudders for some reason which leads me to suspect they thought they were climbing in the air (the high pitch attitude) since they initiated the go around after the nose drop and hard landing.

Very strange. I see no reason for sudden pitch down just before touchdown with resulting bang on the runway. Maybe it was a overly strong pitch input by the pilot, but the G/A is even more disturbing. Once the spoilers deploy it is usually time to continue with the landing. Technically you can G/A as long as the trust reversers are not engaged so this G/A is according to SOP but still a strange decision by the PF.

That pushover is dramatic. Unfortunately the elevator is masked when it occurs but you can clearly see full nose-up deflection right before “impact”. I sure hope the pilot didn’t try to hurry the touchdown.
