Thank You, It's the Perfect Video for my exact same coat. Yes I've made the mistake before not allowing for shank space, and then too tight to button coat. A fake button spacer, might come in handy, like fat O-Ring protecting shank from wear. Just an ole farmer, a stone throw from Rochester. Cheers

@@TailorItYourself I bet I spent 3 hours just looking at basic sewing kits at Amazon, then gave up. There are some clever travel kits by Fiskars. To lock down a small kit with heavy duty waxed thread, is tough. Cheers

You don't necessarily need a kit. You can buy needles and button thread on their own. I would browse wawak.com or pop into a Joann Fabrics store if you have one locally. Even Walmart carries decent sewing supplies.

Hi. I am glad I came across your video. In my city, dry cleaners and tailors have become a rarity, so I had to risk sewing a button on a $500 Ralph Lauren pea coat. Thanks to you, I learned far beyond what I thought was necessary, and my project worked wonderfully. I have a question. You mentioned waxed thread--Is there any gauge or company you prefer? Thanks.

I'm glad you found it helpful! There's a recommended tools list in the description. Any brand thread is fine, but for coat buttons you want a heavy or button weight thread. Or at least 4 stands of regular weight threaded through the needle. Thanks for watching!

I haven't in a while. These videos are extremely time consuming to make, and with weddings resuming and lots of events happening, my tailoring shop has been very busy. So for now I'm focusing on running my business. I'm hoping this fall I can start preproduction on some new stuff. Is there anything you'd like to see?

I have a ton of polyester machine embroidery thread. Is that going to hold up or should I look for button thread?

Embroidery thread is fairly fine. It will work to some degree, but not as well as a button thread, or even a regular weight thread.

Watching this because somehow my coat has all the buttons but it’s missing a BACKER button! 😄 So I’m going to use a regular button to add a backer button to that coat.

I would try to use a smaller button as the backer. If you use a button with a similar diameter as the outside button, it can make it difficult to button. A larger backer will make it stiff around the edges and it can make it harder to get the fabric around the outside button.
