Just a tip. If you keep using metal on metal with your tools(the hammer and rivet setter) you are going to destroy them over time. Better to use a poly hammer or rubber mallet. 👍

I've had these tools for years and they seem to be doing ok. But thank you for the tip!

Is there a way to replace the female side but reuse the back flat piece that gets hammered? I squished a snap and the snap no longer works and it has a specific logo's visible flat back piece i was hoping to reuse.
@TailorItYourself11 күн бұрын
This is discussed in the video. Once the pieces were used, they can't be reused. They're hammered together and it distorts the metal. If you tried to reuse the cap it will likely not hold the post of the other piece very well and it will fail. You can try, but don't be surprised if they come apart on the first use.

Is there a way to replace a spring snap on a garment where the flat back of the female side is on the inside of the garment? In my case, its a flat cap.

Notice you didn't press the hems before sewing? Would it make it easier to sew and less likely to mess the hem up? For beginners like myself at least
@TailorItYourself12 күн бұрын
You certainly can, as long as you press them accurately. Pressing them will also make your chalk lines dissappear.

You can't reuse parts. If you watch the video, you'll see they are hammered together. Once they're hammered, that's it.

I got a pair of bellbottoms there new they look vintage but their reproduction and they were this fun autumn color plaid big bowl plaid print and I can’t wait to wear them. We were such a good price, but the fabric was so beautiful. I got them from I think mod cloth it says sailor swoon Wide leg and they’re green and they have orange and black and yellow stripes. Well plaid I thought well they’re such a good price at least it’s cheaper than buying the fabric and the waistband is already done right but then I realized that the inner part of the leg is really wide. Do you have any suggestions for that with a side Zipper. ;( sad face for side zipper?! 😢
@TailorItYourself21 күн бұрын
I don't understand what you're asking.
@Timetraveler1111MN21 күн бұрын
@ I thought that I’d be able to just take in the bottom part of the pants but now I realize looking at the pants that they are much wider in the upper area. Should I just try to taper in the bottom part that looks like a bell bottom and just keep it straight and wide leg that’s not really what the style I was looking for. I was hoping I could taper in the upper part of the leg under the crouch area, it’s more wide. Just try your technique and see how it goes.
@TailorItYourself21 күн бұрын

Watching this because somehow my coat has all the buttons but it’s missing a BACKER button! 😄 So I’m going to use a regular button to add a backer button to that coat.
@TailorItYourself26 күн бұрын
I would try to use a smaller button as the backer. If you use a button with a similar diameter as the outside button, it can make it difficult to button. A larger backer will make it stiff around the edges and it can make it harder to get the fabric around the outside button.

How do you deal with wide leg pants that become wider at the bottom. I have a pair of jeans to shorten by 5"! Yup, either they are for giants or I am really that short. :) The original hem will be wider around than the new desired hemline. I might be able to stretch the fabric a bit but I am not confident that "a bit" will be enough. Suggestions?

Great instructions, thanks! Question - the fabric around the female piece on my jacket is split (which is why that piece popped out I suppose 🙄). Should I try to reinforce it with a small strip of fabric before putting the new snap on? Thanks.
@TailorItYourselfАй бұрын
This is discussed in the video. If the fabric is torn or the hole is too big to secure the snap, you'll need to back the hole with fabric, stitch over it to reinforce it, and then install the snap.

I’m trying to fix up these demon jeans that I got that are size 40 but I’m trying to size down into maybe 36-34 which is a lot. Any tips? I’m going to go buy some needles like 100/16 for the denim aswell as some chalk. Any tips for making such a big cut? I think I’m going to try and take these parts out from both sides right above the left and right pocket area of the jeans after I seam rip the pockets out.

Would using pinking shears help with the fraying?
@TailorItYourselfАй бұрын
A pinking shears would be better than a straight cut, but it will still fray eventually. Because it's so close to the hem, you'll likely have strings of thread dangling out of the hem.
