Another tip: thrifr stores can supply an endless source of zippers. Often times, you can salvage a zipper from a garment for much less than the price of a new zipper. Also, old, worn out sleeping bags, tents, and sports bags can offer long, heavy duty zips. Thanks for a great, REAL money saving vid! SUBSCRIBED!

@@nickynuts8013 You can actually buy the proper zip stops from any where that sells continuous Zippering. Even Temu sells them and other types of zip repair kits. Super cheap and much easier to use than any make do objects. Actually I was surprised at how many decent sewing supplies they have, mostly at good prices......

Thank you to the channel's creator. And... A little tip for people who have never done these types of repairs before. I believe she is using opposing colours just so you can see how where the repair is but it's super easy to find perfectly matched thread to almost any colour fabric now. If you use matching coloured thread the repair is almost invisible. Happy repairing.❤

I’m thankful she used an obvious color thread so that I could learn the exacts of how close to go with stitching as to how close by the zipper as well as the stitches she used to adhere the coat to the zipper there was complex stitching methods. For the example purposes I’m so glad she used bright thread 🧵.

Is it though? If you have a zip with the ends freed like that it's fairly easy to thread them back in. The problem comes when they are still sewn in to a garment and you can't access the bottom part.
@silverutopia
@silverutopia Ай бұрын
@@cyflym11 Exactly! When the zip's free like that, you just wiggle the two ends into the slider at the same time, no need for anything other than your hands. If the zip is still in the garment, the only thing you can really do is unpick the area at the base of the zip, and then work the slider on as before, assuming the zip is still fit for purpose. Which is exactly what they did on the last repair.

WOW! 12 years ago my washer and dryer broke down and the repair company said “2 weeks to show up and $250 to walk in the door” I expected $$$$ but with two active boys life w/o my W&D was inconceivable! I googled the problem, not expecting anything, but why not try! It took me to a KZbin video explaining how to fix and a link to buy the parts which arrived 3 days later. It took me longer to make space in my pantry to pull them out! Fixing both machines in 30 minutes for $42 was COOL… my boys thinking I was a BAD ASS mum… PRICELESS! I thought KZbin was a silly app where people watched cats doing silly things… and it is, but it’s also a place to learn CLEVER things like this… thx for sharing!

I repair car keys. Often get people in that have been quoted hundreds from the dealer for a new key. I open them & discover it’s a broken battery connector - all fixed & back up and running for practically nothing in comparison to new key. And the job satisfaction is through the roof when repairing things otherwise destined for the bin.

My dryer broke down last year. I would hold down the button, and I could hear the motor running, but when I pressed it, nothing happened. After some research, and a few youtube videos later, I was able to conclude that the belt inside had snapped. I ordered a new one for about $25 and spent less than an hour changing it out. Everything worked out perfect and I ended up buying a second belt as backup.

The last tip, where the zipper splits open behind it, is something I have come across many time (especially on tents). I use a pair of slip-joint pliers to squeeze the zipper and reduce the gap without removing the zipper pull from the garment (or tent). It has always worked for me and saves cutting and stitching. It is literally a 10 second fix.

People used to take steps to repair their own stuff a lot. I can remember my father having our black and white tv apart on the floor, or watching him adjust the picture with our bathroom mirror, (yes the bathroom cabinet mirrors used to slide right out of the door). As a teenage I knew how to darn my own socks, which served me well in the Army, after I was drafted. We used to work on our own cars, washing machines, just about anything you can think of. We even took our shoes to someone who could FIX THEM, if you can imagine that.

Agree. This was randomly recommended to me. I wasn't even looking for it or had commented on it, but I kept wearing my good puffer jacket (not shiny like a bin bag, and it's red, think Cowboy Bebop Spike if you get the reference haha) with a malfunctioning metal zipper and I actually wore it today (without zipping it up since it was doing the doesn't close thing like that bag) and I'd never thought the issue could be the zipper itself. I said 'well, it's worth trying' and went looking for my small pliers and now I'm almost crying because it worked! Some of the teeth were also a bit wonky but I straightened them up and then tried a couple times and now it's working perfectly! Tailors and such do charge a fortune for things. I even thought about replacing it myself but it was too much work for someone who doesn't have a sewing machine. I can sew well, but it would take too bloody long and I'd get frustrated and give up. Backstitch (the thing this person did with the blue thread) takes ages and you have to eyeball the distance between stitches. Plus, if you're impatient like me, you'll end up with a mess halfway through. And that's not always easy to hide, for instance if your jacket or whatever isn't white or black or another basic colour. I have red thread but it's too bright, so it would stand out like a sore thumb. Sorry about the ramble, but your comment really made me feel like talking as someone in a similar situation. And let this be a learning experience for us all - never throw out good garments with messed up zippers, because we might just be able to fix them! I never throw my things away because I'm poor and was wearing this jacket even with the messed up zipper 😂 but still, I could have decided to throw it away for whatever reason and didn't.
