The best truck concept I've seen so far. Low to the ground, a low front end for pedestrian safety, decent range, all wheel drive, it can tow a decent weight, and it can fit nicely in my small garage. Can't wait until it's available. Love it!

The EPA ruined the truck market and CAUSED MORE pollution. Everything is based on size. How many square feet does the truck take up? An S-10 size truck takes up "X" amount of space and is allowed "X" amount of emissions. (almost impossibly small amount) So S-10 sized trucks are no longer sold. Truck makers build them bigger to comply with EPA regulations. That's crazy and has led to behemoth sized vehicles.

6:00 okay so create a version where users can buy a 25kWh, 50kWh, 75kWh, or the full 100kWh version, and built it such that the packs can be added later as needed. With the correct BMS setup there is little reason having modular packs that can be added or replaced over term wouldn't work. Personally I'd buy a 50kWh with two open battery spots, giving me better weight capacity for around town work, and then buy 1-2 more packs down the line if needed. Heck, I'd even keep them at home on a maintenance charger, and only slot them in when going on trips. Some people would say it's too heavy to add/remove packs, but I do the same with a small lift for my roof top tent.

I agree. $50k is going to be a really hard sell IMO. Their big selling point is that it fits in the footprint of a mini Cooper. Well a Mini is $25k. He mentions only needing 5,000 units to break even--I assume that is annually? I guess if they only intend to sell 20,000 - 25,000 per year there might be enough people interested enough in the novelty to have 2 or 3 years of demand which would give them time to--hopefully--scale up production.

@TecnamTwin Жыл бұрын
I was so excited to see the Canoo pickup and TELO's design is even better but I feel their artificial size constraint of a Mini coupled with a whopping $50,000 price point will not serve them well. At least with a big truck, you (and everyone else) can see where your money is going. An extra 2 in. of knee and legroom would greatly improve comfort, and an extra 6" on the bed to make it the new industry standard of 5.5' would improve perception. Additionally, not having a visible, replaceable 5 mph bumper makes this thing look extremely weird, especially from the side. I think the Ford Maverick hybrid is genius and that size is perfect but Ford isn't making nearly enough of them and dealers aren't selling them for low $20Ks which is the real affordable price point we wanted. Too small and most really don't want it.
@Nphen11 ай бұрын
After hearing Gali's post-mortem of Arcimoto (go watch that) the way Telo is talking makes a lot more sense with starting slow. Having a break-even at 5,000 units per year is amazing. That means they can actually get the product out there and grow organically as demand picks up. I really hope Telo wins big. It's the form factor of truck that America desperately needs.

I don’t understand the current sizing of American pickups. IMO, the core sizing spec a pickup must be built around is a standard sheet of plywood. If a sheet can’t fit in the bed, the pickup form-factor is pointless; otoh, larger than a sheet of plywood (or MDF, actually, as they typically MDF sheet is slightly larger than plywood) is unnecessary “compensation”)

I'd be more interested in a 6.5'-8' box without mid-gate. Where I live(North Dakota-ish), it gets to -40°F, and stays around 0 to -22°F for 5 months of the year. The last thing that I want to do is open a mid-gate to gain storage in the cold. Further, losing the rear seats for my squad in order to fit hockey sticks or plywood in the back is not ideal. I see their cute little snow shot, but how's the heater and battery thermal management system gonna handle actual cold temps? I love this idea, and I like the performance figures and efficiency, but I see a few things that will make this truck hard to consider for folks in colder climates.

Make it a 2 door Long bed and I'll buy one. I do not want a 4 door that can take sheets of plywood on occasion as that's not how most contractors use their vehicles. Even better, make the back of the truck a blank canvas so I can build what I need.

Love this idea of a smaller utility truck. Only issue is the price is too high, but can understand they'd go for the big performance and higher price for the first 500 vehicles. The real mass production sweet spot would be under $35k, and that'd be achieved with a smaller battery and half the power.. 500hp for this small ute is ludicrous 😝.. I think they're really aiming for the upscale outdoor adventure sports market and not the inner city utility work vehicle which wouldn't require this high performance or longer range.

I'd rather have a single cab with ~6ft bed. Basically the current single cab Tacoma. But this is a good step in the right direction. I do wonder how they're getting the current energy density. I hope it's not NMC based pouch cells. Cylindrical cells do have a bit higher intrinsic safety factor as each cell is metal armored. It can at least have a chance to reduce the time of major runaway. Now if this trucklet had LFP pouch cells, that would be fine, and even preferred over anything else IMO. Now that LFP patents have passed, prices have dropped like crazy. 50K is still really expensive for something like this. I know it's a new startup and they don't have economies of scale, but reducing that price I think is crucial. I don't know if getting lower HP motors/inverters and a bit lower capacity battery will reduce the price significantly, but I would try something. 500HP is cool, but totally unnecessary for this. Something like a ~200HP chevy bolt motor for the primary drive, and another ~100HP induction motor for the secondary would be fine for this. A truck this sized will never be used to tow anything more than a couple thousand pounds.

Not sure that a lot of truck buyers will look at this vs say a Lightning (or similar) at the same price point and see them as equal in value and quality. Perceived quality of the cabin alone I can see putting many off a small run unit. What are all the killer features (plural), besides small that would make someone want it over a mainstream EV truck? Small can also be perceived as less safe and less luxurious. Love the idea, just have trouble seeing it being highly in demand.

Yes! More small truck EVs! Majority of conversations I have with people who still aren’t convinced to transition to an EV yet, usually say something along the lines of “until they make a small Ford Ranger size pick up EV, I’ll have to wait”. Also, cut that battery in half @53kWh. You don’t need more than 200miles in an EV in 2023- chargers are every 20-50miles. 106kWh is way too much battery. The new benchmark should be to never have more than 70 kWh for an EV battery, if you want more range, get a more efficient (smaller/different shape) car that can go twice as far with the same energy.

Really like it, lots of potential in their concept. Hope they bring it to market.

isn't the air running through the front door ( @ 19:00 ) gonna make it super loud at highway speeds?
@Alexdiaz727 Жыл бұрын
That was my thinking too. Plus road noise from the tire. An air funnel from the wheel well to the the inside of the door seems like a recipe for wind and road noise in the cabin. Also wonder about all the typical internals of a door. Will it not have speakers, motorized windows, cup holders / pockets.
@harriettanthony7352 Жыл бұрын
@@Alexdiaz727 Forget wind noise; how about cold winter air, SNOW,ICE, SLUSH, ROAD SALTS!!! This idea will die with some real world test. It might even freeze the door shut when parked overnight with all that moisture in there. And then the rust factor

To make this product really over the top in terms of utility, they should allow the sides of the bed to fold down to allow for even more carrying space for those slightly oversized items. And then make sure to put tie points under the vehicle so the loads can be tied down.

Looks like the perfect truck for Europe. Most Germans have a 3,5tons covering drivers license.

WoW, just WoW ! Excellent packaging This would fit my use cas because of 8 foot bed and folding rear seats.

I'm an Aptera accelerator and look forward to getting my vehicle to do most of my driving but I do like the utility of my RAV4 and this could be something that I would be interested in for loading up with yard work and stuff like that. I haven't seen anything about the company but his plan for delivery in 2025, seems optimistic, IMO. Just seeing what Aptera is going through with their transparency of what they're doing with their build, I can't imagine this thing getting to market from what I'm seeing now at the same time that Aptera is planning on releasing. But hope springs eternal and I'm digging the design.

I agree, very likely won’t be ready by then

Great coverage, very interesting concept (and proto-kit or whatever that’s called), but there are two things that interest me: - repairability (think about Aptera, great idea + concept to make things repairable and more importantly accessible for everybody) - front tyre exposure: you only need to get a bit bumped in a parking situation or similar and the front tyre needs a repair - where a bumper would protect it and just split. A front tyre/suspension/geometry damage is costly and every owner should want to avoid that. I get the idea of the positioning, but a little tyre protection (think about e.g. the Smart car) would be desirable.
@spankeyfish Жыл бұрын
Tyres will take a lot more abuse than a bumper, they absorb an enormous amount of force when you hit a pothole. My concern is that the steering rack and front ARB/swaybar seem to be about a millimetre behind the front bumper. Hopefully the black 'skirt' around the bottom of the body is plastic panels that are reasonably easy to replace, it could do with a similar one for front so something like a Camry dent doesn't become a $3000 problem.

I've always loved hondas and toyotas (most japanese) cars for their excellent use of space, and this thin might be something I actually consider getting in a few-a dozen years when my hatch dies

My only concern is the front crumple zone being in your feet, leaving you as a both legs amputee in case of an accident, i would redesign the front, to also have better air tunnel efficiency, and also have 2 types of bed covers, one like the cybertruck with the camera back mirror, one classic only on top of the bed, and the split of the 500hp should be 330 hp in the back and 170hp in the front. Everything else is great.

Design is one thing building a prototype is one thing but manufacturing is a whole lot more and where most companies fail

That’s pretty cool! I actually own and drive daily one of those kei trucks (technically it’s a kei van), a smaller footprint truck with modern safety would be a dream come true.

This would be the perfect vehicle for me as a city-dweller. Compact, yet offers good cargo room as required. The only downside is the price. I think it needs to be priced at 40K before incentives to sell well at volume. Maybe a version with a bit less battery and slower 0-60 time (6 seconds)? I'd buy this variant in a heartbeat.
@linusa2996 Жыл бұрын
If the price of batteries drop to $25-50/watt then it can be below 25k

15:50 Most American motorcycle riders need lots of range (or a Tesla Super Charger), no one in the space seems to really get that.
