This would score low on a crash test. 1 star frontal crash test with no crumple zone. Coffin truck
@danielthompson392810 күн бұрын
@frostcb2 the crumple zone is about the same. The engine block on trucks are not a part of the crumple zone. In fact, it actually represents a risk which is why they have an additional part called a firewall. The Telo does not have a death block sitting in front of the passenger and thus has no need for that and only needs to reduce and divert impact which it will actually have the advantage in doing. Your argument would be valid if dangerous ICE trucks didn’t exist and you were only comparing it to other electric trucks. But the existence of non-electric trucks with a death block in front of the passenger, again, makes that point invalid.

I have reservations for both Aptera and Telo vehicles. This is cool, but as someone who has worked at a tech startup I think they should probably focus on a smaller feature set to get their first product out the door. Adding solar stuff like this seems like it will require additional engineering time and delay the launch of their product. Launching quickly is usually critical to the success of a startup. Another odd thing about this is that one of the benefits of a Telo truck is that, because it is so small it is easy to fit in a garage. If you are parking in a garage then you get a lot less out of the solar panels. For a big truck that will be parked outside (like my brother's F150 Lightning), solar panels make more sense. Especially on a camper shell. I think this is a good idea for a Telo V2 though.

You buried the lead, Drew! A topper option for the Telo is huge news. And quite likely will gain you more mileage than the solar option, but I like that too! Both combined would be phenomenal!!
@bobhellman867610 күн бұрын
The Telo flat top would make a great foundation for flipping open a full-length roof panel on each side, which would triple the active area, not to mention an overhang you could use for camping, lunch, whatever. Optional of course, but if you opened it on site or wherever you had room, that would be a pretty decent boost. There are some carbon-fiber backed panels that are quite light and rugged. If one of the 2 “fold-outs” was actually shaped as an aero-cover for the set, the drag penalty would seem to be reasonable. If you really got carried away, the aero-cover could be 2-sided solar, so you get basic power closed and 3X when open.

@bobhellman86766 күн бұрын
Pretty fair. It’s excessively wide/impractical, lacks widespread appeal, lacks safety vs. less expensive 4-wheeled options, and they can’t afford to build it for the price they claimed. Which continues to rise as content drops.
@bobhellman86768 күн бұрын
Aptera’s total lack of transparency with regard to how their systems test out in the real world sucks. On Telo solar, going in, if you have (400W/700W)(100?kWh/350kWh) it means you get roughly 1/6th the range benefit of whatever Aptera gets. So that's not much of who knows how much. Wonderful. If Telo is even considering this, they should get 2 panels and the interface on a demo as soon as possible and test it themselves. The Demo Tour seems like a perfect opportunity. Telo cannot kick the testing can down the road like Aptera has. That Aptera has been into their spiel for decades and, apparently, has yet to run one full charge down the road publicly is insane.

yes it won't fully charge the truck, but really, we should be putting solar panels on every flat surface that sits out in the sun and isn't doing anything else. All that energy produced reduces the amount we have to generate by less green ways. Cover all the parking lots with solar, the freeway medians, every roof. Spread it everywhere. It eventually pays for itself, it reduces the need for oil or nuke. Yes! If my car gained ten miles of travel just sitting there every day, would that not be great?

The further Telo stays away from Aptera the better. Telo will absolutely have their hands full setting up reliable vendors that meet schedules, quality, and value. A manufactured product, and a company, lives or dies by their ability to do this. It takes virtually nothing to kill the momentum. It’s a science and art to keep things moving efficiently. Enter Aptera, the anthesis of that. God help Telo if they’re waiting on Aptera for solar. Aptera just attended CES without finished roof and decklid solar ON THEIR OWN VEHICLE! What lightning bolt is expected to hit Carlsbad and turn that empty space into a manufacturing facility? Will they even be there a year from now?

400W would take 2.5 hours of perfect performance to get 1 kWh of juice. Because the panels are flat, straight up, they're not at the perfect angle for performance. Knock 20% off that for poor angle. Another 10-20% to deal with cloud cover, haze, inefficiency, etc. That means about 5 hours of sunlight to get 1 kWh of juice. If the F-150 gets 3.0 miles of range per kWh, that means you'd get 3 miles of range off of sunlight -- on a good day. Average price of electricity in the US is about $0.15 per kWh, so you're making about $0.15 of power every good day of charging. How much does that 400W roof/bed cover panel cost?
