To the question "why isn't the terminal not in dark mode by default" >> to raise less suspicion when you're using it in a public place. Same goes for the "ugly" simple and not modern look. So to an untrained eye, it looks like an old version of windows. Even the chose of wallpaper color is meant in that intent of "blending in" and "not raise suspicion".

Tails is solid, only issue with tails or tor is your isp can see you are using tails/tor. Which in some cases, may make you look suspicious because you are the one person on the isp who only uses tor. Really could do a great video on how to avoid this issue of your isp seeing your tor use. Such as a bridge possibly. Or raspberry pi tor router. Solutions and content. Good stuff good memes
@Jamesthe1
@Jamesthe1 3 жыл бұрын
A VPN or proxy at least moves that trust of who sees what you send to someone else, though the former is safer. However, read the provider's policies first just to see what they do with your data. Also, user agents (tells the site your OS, browser, etc) can be changed by the client, assuming you can do this on Tor.

@glitchy_weasel
@glitchy_weasel 3 жыл бұрын
@Bernd Lauert I believe a bridge stops the ISP from knowing you're using Tor (because the IPs of the bridges are not supposed to be published as the IPs of entry nodes do). The server you're connecting to will always known you're using Tor unless you tunnel it in someway with VPN over Tor (or is it the other way arround, don't remember), but I don't known is that is a good idea.

It seems to not work all the time for me. With that said, I'd rather it just delete everything from memory to begin with. Less to trust, less to go wrong, just better overall. @@LaskyLabs Also, funny thing, the dvd version of tails is technically the most secure, since most dvds are read-only after writing once, unlike usb sticks which are rewritable all the time, and unless you make your own usb stick hardware to specifically have a hardware switch which disables input, you still run the risk of compromised hardware writing code to your device. Forget the dark web; any time you want security without having to think twice abiut it, Tails is for you. It's the main reason why I kinda gave up on investments and business in general. Whenever you buy or sell anything, the government will be there to ruin you with taxation. It would be bad enough if it was just about the money but the worst part is the increased stress of knowing that they will be there to ruin me if I happen to not know about any tiny detail about their gigantic bureaucracy. My sanity can't handle much of that. And on top of all that there is always the risk of cryptocurrencies being banned or "REGULATED FOR OUR SAFETY". Can you make a review of Whonix later on, or perhaps Whonix over Qubes. In Tails, if somehow the OS gets compromised, and the attacker manages to escalate priviledges (because you enabled a weak root password for example) then the attacker could bypass Tor and see deanonymize the user. Whonix takes a different aproach which is to use two virtual machines: one that acts as a Tor gateway and firewall, and another that is the workstation. If the workstation gets compromised, it should not be possible for the attacker to bypass the firewall.

Good job, but some important points. DO NOT UPDATE TAILS FROM WITHIN THE SYSTEM. you can use the automatic tails update which gives you the latest version, but running a system update is a big no no. It can completely break your anonymity. Tails isn't meant to be used as a daily driver. Finally the Devs have though hard about every choice they make to balance usability with safety.

As I understand it, Tails can be installed to have persistence, although I could be wrong. I always run Linux from a USB drive and want my changes to be saved. I would also like to be able to easily create a usable clone of my boot USB. Recommendations and suggestions? Thanks.

If you disable javascript you'll loose functionality in most modern websites. This means having a good ad blocker is the go-to option if you want to use websites that aren't 10+ years old.

It's Tor, it isn't meant to access to the normal internet. Basically, in the deep web most websites look like 2000's sites, and they barely use JS (why would you need it when it only shows CP videos/pics or plain text?).
@gomescodes5546
@gomescodes5546 2 жыл бұрын
You clearly never used tor and don't know what it's mostly for. "Browse Privately. Explore Freely." is literally their motto. It's not made JUST to access the deep web, IT CAN be used for that, but it is, ultimately, a browser that access an encrypted open network that routes data through multiple servers while encrypting all the way through, preserving your identity, data and ultimately your privacy, while allowing people from 'strict countries' to access content from the outside.
@hasher9360
@hasher9360 2 жыл бұрын
@@gomescodes5546 So, the 3 "VPN"'s of the browser are always used, even when just accessing normal websites through TOR? And, btw, don't jump to conclusions: I do use TOR, but not for protecting my privacy in any way, I just access deep web sites occassionally, so never really had the need to inform myself on the security/privacy standards it has for accessing the normal web.
@gomescodes5546
@gomescodes5546 2 жыл бұрын
@@hasher9360 You just said Deep Web only has CP and plain text, and that you're a user. Kappa. While using Tor you're AT LEAST connected through the Onion network. You're never directly connecting to a website, hence your IP and location are never compromised. Because it connects through different "routing" each time.

@@tylerdean980 Yes, installing TAILS as a virtual machine would likely use disk space (the same space that would be used when installing TAILS on a flash drive). Once TAILS loads, it runs 100% in RAM (the files you see are on a RAM disk). But for those that will try TAILS natively (installing and running from a flash drive), they should know that disk space is meaningless (short of creating optional, persistent storage).

Hey dude, you all good? Got a burning question nobody seems to care to want to answer 😭 So I'm looking at some kind of mini form factor pc 'box' to run tails from. Don't need it for anything else really as plan to build a decent mini ITX or even just a powerful android box as it's literal purpose would he just YT, browsing on sites i have accounts etc. Firstly any advice for decent password creator/manager? And as for my 'Tails OS' machine, I'm just wondering if you can give me specific details or link me to a laptop/mini pc (NUC style) etc. There's so much conflicting info on what on board graphics work etc. Id like for either 8 or 12gb ram a 64/128gb SSD and the best value cpu. Looking at around £300/£350.. So $420/$380. Even if its used im not fussed. Just so confused. Got my new full fibre connected tomorrow (well today now) so wanna get up and secure ASAP. Please help a bro out. Appreciate everything you do my man 👌 Peace
