The amount of effort you have put into this review is insane. Not only did you discuss the pros and cons of Tainted Grail / Kings of Ruin but you also give good critical feedback and possible ALTERNATIVES!!! to fix these potential issues. So many others just give a high level preview with catchy sound bites and hardly handly critical feedback. I hope Awaken Realms deep dive into this video and take all your feedback into consideration because I truly think it would lead to an even better game. Props guys!

Me too man. I live in another country with strict taxes on importing, so I'm trying to get only the necessary. Which would be either the FOA Expansion, while purchasing the base game here to skip taxes or buy the KOR base w/ stretch goals, that would make an even bigger box with higher change of a big taxes. FOA seems flawed on reviews, but even so, it is well ranked on BGG. Which means that can be a decent fun. Probably. KOR fixes a lot of problems but stands at a higher costs to me, which I don't know if it's worth because I don't own FOA. There is also the chance of a company in my country bringing KOR as retail, as happened with FOA. Tough decision to make.
@Shelfside Жыл бұрын
Be careful when it come to bgg scores for kickstarter exclusive games because that means it got less exposure from the general board game public and instead has inflated scores from people who were either already inclined to like it or are already superfans who keep up with all the kickstarter updates. If you like the aesthetic and story hooks of Tainted Grail, I'd say first and foremost figure out if you like the cardplay, and if you do I'd highly suggest KoR over FoA, which at this point I'd only recommend if it turns out you're a big fan of Tainted Grail and want even more after playing KoR -Daniel@@yesmadx

Good question! We haven't played Fall of Avalon 2.0, so can't speak too much there, but if you're looking for a more streamlined experience, KoR definitely more like that with the less open-world-ness. Again, only speaking from our experience on the prototype :D -Ashton

Id like to add how right you were about the trick to writing rulebooks; dont make goofy rules that arent intuitive to begin with. It really is that simple. So many devs make this error and its frustrating to have to continuously read a rule to pound it in to my head bc it is not intuitive at all. Cheers for that comment, ill be repeating it to all these crowd funding devs in the future.

Great video! I'm only 26 minutes in and you already got a new subscriber :) Quick question, since there are so many pro's over the Fall of Avalon, should I still get FoA (as I really want to)? I would hate it if the gameplay is so different that I ended up not liking it over KoR. Basically, what is the difference between FoA and FoA 2.0 that they are releasing? What will be improved in FoA 2.0, if anyone knows?
@Shelfside Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately don't know, Awaken Realms still hasn't released further details on what 2.0 FoA changes. All they've said is wider generalizations like a fast travel system, less resource costs for less grind, better balance, etc. but no specific details as to what's being changed. -Daniel

Firstly, one of the most comprehensive and consistently entertaining board game reviews I’ve ever watched. Been hunting for more content just like this. You had me so amped and keen, but knowing the fight mechanics are tedious/repetitive has made me grow ever so slightly skeptical. Do you feel they can tweak this or is the train left the station?
@Shelfside2 жыл бұрын
I think it's fine as is if you enjoy it, but I'm someone who found it be meh in the first place, and after finishing the first game, it's just tiring for me personally since there's no fundamental changes. If this is your first Tainted Grail game, I don't see it as an issue since there's drastically less fighting in Kings of Ruin! And even if you do eventually get sick of it, hopefully that's from having a Tainted Grail campaign under your belt lol -Daniel

Thank you so much for making this HUGE video with so many well-explained criticisms for both pros and cons! We are now 100% sure that Tainted Grail is not for us. We enjoyed Etherfields for the first 5-6 hours (despite how bad the rules and learning them is with the game) but Tainted Grail just feels like "great story, boring mechanics". You need to play ISS Vanguard - yeah it's a different setting, but the writing is on the same level as Tainted Grail, and the gameplay part is literally your suggestion - simplified to dice rolls and map movement, with lots of ways to manipulate the dice. Having a bunch of different characters is cool but I don't like to see it coming at the cost of big imbalance issues which seem to be a recurring problem in Awaken Realms games. I also feel that some mechanics such as insanity are just thrown in to be more thematic, but they don't really improve the game well. Pretty awesome at a lot of the other things they changed though, especially reducing the grind!

Fantastic review, thank you! I especially appreciated the breakdown of everyone's opinion of the combat system. It struck me as meh in the original and this seems like more of the same. I'm on the fence on this one, and if I do go for it wondering how deep I should go. I'm interested in your opinion on if the monster minis are worth it. Do they hang around on the board for a while or are they just out and back into the box?
@Shelfside2 жыл бұрын
They definitely stay around longer than previously cause they can no longer disappear on their own, but if your playstyle involves hunting them down the instant they spawn then the minis may not last that long still lol. Alright, might even get this. Always thought AR Games are games for almost the price of a game with tons of minis but without tons of minis and thus a bad deal, but I got so many minis coming I don't care about that as much anymore. Also thought about getting the Fall of Avalon 2.0, but while it will be better, I don't think they can introduce all these fixes with just rules changes, they would have to change core components, which won't happen. I wanna experience the story of FoA first, but I don't think it's worth it to pay an additional ~150 € for a still suboptimal experience.
@fy87982 жыл бұрын
The idea that "tons of minis" is "value" is inherently pretty clueless and one of the big things holding back the hobby. The reality is that mounds of minis are cheap. Ignorant people just THINK of them as value, so the minis get used to pretty much trick them into getting stuff that's really much cheaper but can be used to overcharge fools. The real value in a game is the gameplay content.
@Tharukan2 жыл бұрын
@@fy8798 The idea that what you personally deem valuable is the objective definition of value is what I'd call clueless. Minis do have value for me and many different people, be it in increased immersion, to paint or to simply collect. The notion that minis are cheap to produce is, in most instances, just plain wrong. It generally is one of the biggest cost factors in mini board games. In addition, you are either moving the goal posts or were not able to understand what I was saying at all. I was quite clearly not speaking about a game that removed gameplay content and added in minis INSTEAD, I was argueing that a lot of games have as much gameplay content as AR titles IN ADDITION TO tons of minis, f. e. Arena: The Contest/ Tanares Adventures, Stormsunder and tons of others. Lastly, calling people on the internet clueless and ignorant because they hold a different opinion to yours, or in this case, you utterly midunderstood their opinion, is quite a dickish thing to do. YOU are what is holding this hobby back. Cheers.
