Ximending is pronounced "Shi Men Ding", unfortunately it's the PRC's way of spelling. Taiwan Used to use Roman spelling which makes more sense. For example, PRC spelling Qi would pronounced Chi. The reason for PRC spelling that way is to fit all the phonetic sounds for Chinese on a standard alpha-numeric computer keyboard. So they end up having X as sh, Q as ch and a few other odd ones.
