We have been wanting to visit Taiwan for years - and we mean YEARS. Finally it's happening! Our month long trip begins in Taipei, where we visit Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and try some of Taiwan's incredible food - including, yes, stinky tofu.

@@TalesFromOurPocket 1st visit back in 2011. Multiple visits each year after until finally making the move in 2018. Best life decision that I've made next to marrying my wife who is also Taiwanese and the reason Taiwan got onto my radar.

I identify with this a lot. As an American-born Taiwanese who never really paid much attention to my Taiwanese heritage, I was unexpectedly moved by my most recent trip back to Taiwan this year. I honestly can't put my finger on it, and I don't know why it was this trip that made me feel so strongly when all my previous visits had just felt like idle vacations or family obligations. But I came back with a deep love for Taiwan that I hadn't felt before, and a profound appreciation for the people, culture, food, and geography. The moment I stepped off the plane in the US, all I could think about was going back- that's never happened to me before in all my travels around the world. Taiwan really is a uniquely wonderful place.

There are many pro-Japanese countries in the world, but among them, Japan and Taiwan are particularly close. If there is damage from an earthquake, they immediately come to help or donate a large amount of money. Many Japanese and Taiwanese visit each other's countries. Japan ruled Taiwan from 1895 to 1945. Many Taiwanese view this era positively (this is in contrast to South Korea). Taiwan has been democratized since 1988. The economy is also developing (TSMC is the number one semiconductor manufacturer in the world).
@TalesFromOurPocket

We were indeed surprised by the pro-Japanese sentiment in Taiwan. So different from South Korea. Our next video dives a little more into the Japanese-Taiwanese connection that's still there today. 😁 (including some amazing Japanese food!)
@lily-dw5kn
@lily-dw5kn Жыл бұрын
Contrary to South Korea the society in Taiwan suffuses with the pro-japan atmosphere because after ww2 South Korea has become an independent country but Taiwan was ruled by Kmt from China immediately. The vintage of Chiang-kai-shek followers from China and their descendants only occupy about 12% of citizens in Taiwan but they're in the driving seats. Comparing Japanese ruling Era with Kmt ruling Era, the majority of Taiwanese prefer Japanese ruling Era to Kmt.
@TalesFromOurPocket

@@lily-dw5knAnother factor might be that unlike South Korea, Taiwan had never had a collective identity prior to the Japanese era. Also, the ''personality'' of the Taiwanese culture (influenced also by climate as well as other factors) seems less ''strong'' and more ''laid-back'' compared to the Koreans. Quite a few factors at play here.

Stinky tofu is basically aged cheese made with soy milk insread of dairy milk. Anyone who enjoy fermented food (expensive cheese, kimchi, fish sauce) can appreciate it. Of course, the name is bad PR and many western and Japanese KZbinrs really exaggerate the smell and make a stink about it ;) Glad y'all enjoyed it though; the shaved ice as palate cleanser is a slick move!

We kept asking people in Taiwan what it was called in English, like what the Mandarin word translated to, and we just kept being told it really was stinky tofu. 😂😂😂 The way you explain it - like aged cheese but made with tofu - is perfect. I wonder if the French like stinky tofu??

Chiang Kai-shek is not the founder of Taiwan. In fact, he killed thousands of people during his reign in Taiwan.(Chiang(kmt) was defeated by Mao (ccp) and had no choice but fled to Taiwan) There has been some discussion about removing his statue from the memorial hall, and change the name.

@@TalesFromOurPocket It's understandably confusing as to why Chiang Kai-shek is seen as a hero for ROC but not as much for Taiwan. This is because ROC and Taiwan carries with them two very different experiences/histories. As a result, the former (specifically the older generation of ROC supporters) has more of a anti-Japan sentiment whereas the latter has more of a favourable view of Japan. But modern day Taiwan as a whole is quite fond of Japan.

You guys got lucky with the shaved ice! The typical version, called bao bing, is what you'd expect- normal shaved ice with toppings, similar enough to what you can get all over Southeast Asia. What you got is called xuehua bing, and is a uniquely Taiwanese version that is indeed made with frozen condensed milk. One of my favorites! As a tangent, related to the other comment about Japanese influence: the Japanese are generally credited with inventing shaved ice, as far back as the 10th century or even earlier, and all the modern versions (Korean/Filipino/Hawaiian/etc) are considered derivatives. So this is another example of the strong Japanese influence on Taiwanese food culture!

At Taipei 101, it has amazing food court and it even has Dintaifung Chinese cuisine in the basement. But not sure if you know that. At first, it may smell bad but it actually tastes better than its smell! It is delicious.

Of course, it cannot be denied that Din Tai Fung is the representative restaurant of the most famous Taiwanese Xiaolongbao cuisine in the world! Here, I also want to let you know that there are some steamed buns that are as delicious as Din Tai Fung in many cities in Taipei and Taiwan, but the price is only about half of Din Tai Fung!! ~ If you have a chance, you can search for relevant information on Google I can find it!!~ Remind you that in northern Taiwan, especially Taipei and Keelung, you should pay attention to the weather forecast and it is best to bring a foldable umbrella with you, because the weather changes quickly and the temperature difference is usually ten degrees Oh!!~ It doesn’t rain so often in central and southern Taiwan! In addition, the travel spirit and attitude of the two are great!~~ Even stinky tofu can be accepted very quickly!~ This is not common!!~~~ Mmm!~ You know how to eat!~ Bless you in Taiwan The travel can be smooth and happy!!~ To add, Taiwan's outlying islands, such as Penghu, Xiaoliuqiu, Mazu, Kinmen and other island groups, also have great attractions and diving activities. You can see Taiwan's coral reefs, beautiful seascapes and sea turtles!~~

I was wondering when the after taste of stinky tofu will kick in…hahaha. Glad you guys gave it a go….regardless. I’m not a huge fan either, but my husband end up liking it way too much more than me. He had it 4 times while we were in Taiwan last month. BTW, did I misheard you said next video is a month later?
