It's not as simple. Taiwan benefited greatly when the massive tracts of land held by wealthy landowners were divided and distributed to the Taiwanese. The land to the tiller program gave people a capital boost which enabled them to get loans and start businesses. This had the added benefit of reducing social inequality and social instability. They also have an economy geared towards industrial production and benefitted from foreign direct investment during the cold war.
@fatboyRAY24 Жыл бұрын
1. “High quality” really means new. If you’re a country that just industrialize then chances are you’ll be using the newest technology available. 2. I’m guessing you’re American since most Americans complain online a lot for some reason (no offense), but they also need it more given the high density of the country. Taiwan isn’t Santa Monica, they aren’t in the goldilocks zone of population density where driving is more efficient than public transit. So they literally need it or their economy would tank.

EDA is also critical to designing and manufacturing cutting edge chips. The top 3 EDA companies in the world are all based in US, and US has restricted access to these. SMIC had a YoY quarterly revenue (Q2 2022vs Q2 2023) decline of ~50%, and their Chairman has resigned. Additionally In 2021 4 of their board members resigned. Oue companies are very competitive for example, the market cap of Taiwanese listed company almost equal to Korea and Australia listed companies while our gdp are half to those economy And we have more competitive companies that are privately held. The results are: 1. more company profits and less salary comprise the gdp 2. We have very dense rich people 3. The rich pay most of the tax via corporate tax or income(dividends )tax 4. 50% people don’t need to pay income tax and our consumer tax is almost lowest in the world 5. We have many subsidies in medical, electricity, oil etc. 6. House price easily goes up due to the dense rich people 7. Middle classes living comfortably due to the low income and consumer tax, low commodity price and government subsidy for the basic need, however, they will live stressfully if they buy a house 8. The lawmakers neglect the house price issue because they own houses even be a real estate developers, and 80% people own a house so they also have incentive to keep the house price up Conclusion : we have house price issue and work life balance issue but purchasing power is good if don’t buy a house

I am a 68 yo Taiwanese born in the 50's, therefore, I've experienced the development of this country. I personally believe that the major factor that brought Taiwan success in the last 50 years is "EDUCATION". This education system not only compulsory in the fundamental part for young people, but also affordable for higher level, such as college and post college. Take myself and my wife for instance. none of our parents was higher junior-high, but she and I both are college level, and I even get an MBA from an US graduate school, to my children's generation, all of them, including my daughter-in-law all receive master degree. I know this doesn't occur in every Taiwan families, but it is true for many. Higher education in a society as a whole not only brings about more knowledge, broad vision, flexible attitude toward new things, and most importantly, much much more confidence to meet challenge, and thus Taiwan keeps on the pace.

Perhaps, but it was only a pipe dream that Ukraine would have ever, prior to the full-scale war, somehow become a better performing economic/cultural model for the East Slavic world in the way that Taiwan/Hong Kong served in the Chinese world. Unlike in Asia, the argument of democracy vs autocracy is a fuzzy one for the post-Soviet sphere: Kyiv was able to have peaceful transfers of power, but also squandered many of its economic advantages: Instead of following the rapid development of Poland, Ukraine ended up with a GDP per capita 1/4th the size of even Russia, largely because it’s oligarch class was even more parasitic than Moscow’s. (Russian gangster capitalists at least control oil and gas fields; their Ukrainian counterparts just siphon rents off oil/gas *transport*.) I.e., I think it’s less that Russia invaded Ukraine to prevent a well-performing economy on its borders, but that the failure of successive Ukrainian governments to develop economically made it ripe for intervention and invasion from the east. The war, in a sense, is the last second chance Kyiv will have. I must say, the obvious heroism and talent for symbolism of the Zelensky government doesn’t necessarily inspire much confidence for realism and efficiency in postwar redevelopment. For its next government, Ukraine doesn’t need a Winston Churchill; it needs a Clement Attlee.

You rate Ireland at number 2 on the list, and Taiwan in the teens. As an Irishman living in Taiwan, this is absurd: A) Taiwan has quadruple the population of Ireland, and the economy is similarly larger. Ireland's GDP figures are distorted upwards, while Taiwans GDP figures are distorted down. Victory Taiwan B) Taiwan has far more developed infrastructure then Ireland. Taiwan has multiple cities with over a million people, and multiple subway systems. Ireland has just 1 large city (which is small compared to Taipei), and no metro systems. Victory Taiwan. C) Ireland and Taiwan have similarly advanced industrial bases. Ireland's industrial base has more services/IT, but those services companies are more centralised and less robust then Taiwan. If just two or 3 tech companies left, Ireland would lose a significant proportion of gdp, and they can easily do so as they have little physical capital in Ireland. Ireland still has pharmaceutical, semiconductors and agribusiness however. Taiwans biggest companies cannot easily leave due to having huge physical assets in the country (TSMC cannot simply move the way facebook can). Draw or narrow victory to Taiwan. D) Taiwan has lower rates of poverty(and almost no homelessness) , and higher salaries relative to costs of living. Salaries in Ireland barely cover living costs, and homelessness is common and growing. Victory Taiwan. E) Both political systems are stable. Taiwan does have the problem of its big brother next door invading, while Ireland has to deal with Brexit and the growth of radical politics (Sinn Fein). Narrow victory to Ireland. I'm not sure if Taiwan should be raised on the leader board, but Ireland should not be as high as it is. It makes no sense.

"Free market democratic ideals" may apply aptly to modern Taiwan but it's definitely inaccurate to describe the Republic of China in those terms prior to the 1990s. Setting aside Chiang Kai-shek's abysmal dictatorship in the mainland, the White Terror in Taiwan and the decades of brutal dictatorship under the Kuomintang were far from democratic and quite frankly not very free market either. The current ruling pan-green coalition are definitely a more progressive and democratic force than either the KMT or the CCP, but the way you conflated an era of KMT dictatorship with contemporary Taiwanese democracy is disingenuous and dangerous since viewers who perhaps didn't study the Chinese Civil War in school might walk away with the impression that Taiwan's economy is the result of being under "democratic" rule for as long as the mainland was under Communist rule, which is far from reality. I feel like the numbers doesn’t include how important Taiwan’s economy is to the world. Let’s just talk semiconductors alone since that’s the only one I have numbers on. It is estimated that if China and Taiwan goes to war the chances of TSMC dissolving will be almost guaranteed. If TSMC dissolves world technology would be set back by 20 years (think the semiconductor shortage during COVID but instead of lasting for a bit over a year, it is here for 20 years) and there will be an immediate 4 trillion dollar impact to the world economy. This isn’t even factoring in the amount of economic losses that will happen world wide while the world is trying to rebuild their semiconductor logistics. This is significantly worst than South Korean or Japan losing their semiconductor industries since Taiwan have 90% of the market share in high tech semiconductors and below a certain semiconductor size TSMC is the only company in the world that can produce it.
@yerri5567 Жыл бұрын
@EadricRicmund 20 years? Dont be so naive. TSMC is a only a few years ahead of #2 and #3. If TSMC dissolves, all TSMCs clients will just go to #2 and #3 to get their semiconductors. Since they can’t, you are assuming they can in a short time 9x their output when they can barely make the same semiconductor consistently right now? "TSMC is number 1 isn’t just because of cheaper labor, but because they can mass produce cutting edge semiconductor consistently. If #2 and #3 can do it they would have done so already" I dont think you understand. This is WITH THE ASSUMPTION, that TSMC dissolves. Once TSMC dissolves, all its clients will go to #2 and #3. With that increase in demand for #2 and #3, theyll be able to reach economies of scale for mass production. The reason why theyre not able to now is because they dont have the number of clients, but once they absorb TSMCs clients, theyll be able to produce equally as well. "Since they can’t, you are assuming they can in a short time 9x their output when they can barely make the same semiconductor consistently right now?" 4.5x each if split equally between #2 & #3. And yes, with the adjustments in supply chain, thats indeed very possible. All thats needed is clients. In the short term, prices for consumers will rise and they may be some delays due to the disruption in supply chains. But the key technology know-how is still there, and as said earlier, theyre only a couple years behind. So its not going to set the world back 20 years... "Also have you looked at the background of the people in the think tank? Cause I just checked and there are economists and engineers in there" And who are they funded by? Anything but funding from independent sources will be criticised for having agendas. I'm surprised to see that Saudi Arabia isn't on the list of top refined oil exporters but Luxembourg is?? Anyone can share a source link to this info at 09:55?

Someone in China is freaking out right now because of how many times you called Taiwan a country.
@chuningfeng5786 Жыл бұрын
not really, most mainland Chinese agree Taiwan is a country now as resulted by US support but will be united.

4:30 Does anyone know why's Oman (I guess?) also marked Subject of Vote in that map
@howtoappearincompletely9739 Жыл бұрын
EE took that map from the Wikipedia article on "United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758", which includes the Wikimedia Commons image "File:Voting res 2758.svg". The error arose because EE changed the annotation for yellow in the key from "Non-voting" to "Subject of Vote". China, the Maldives, and Oman were absent from the vote for UN General Assembly Resolution 2758; their absences were recorded separately from other members' abstentions. To make it clear, no, Oman was not a subject of the vote on Resolution 2758. EE videos are frequently riddled with errors: Besides the one above, the map of China at various times includes the territories of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, whereas the map of Italy at 8:35 includes Corsica, which is part of France. Attention to detail is not one of EE's strengths.
