Taiwan have force conscription. So even if they don’t have guns at home, everyone (as in people that have to be conscripted) know how to use a gun and is required to go back for training every few years after their conscription is over. Gun ownership is controversial because of cultural influences, not because they don’t know how to use a gun or fight. My uncle use to fly fighter jets and my dad use to drive destroyers when they were the ages of 18 to 22. During the years when KMT tried to suck up to China (early 2000s) they reduced conscription time from 4 years to 2 years. Then at the height of this sucking up they reduced further to only 1 year and eventually less. Now with tension escalating they are increasing it back up to one year.

People can buy kits except guns. Reservists are getting paid by the tax payer's money to be officially trained by the Army. The problem is the content of the training just wasn't enough to meet the challenge of an invasion by PRC (CCP ruled China, the one recognized by the UN). That's why there are people invested in "self training" using their own money and time.

@@JamieLannyster i mean yeah police stations arent secret. But i for example wouldnt know what kind of weaponry my nearest police station has. Maybe they have 10 rifles there, maybe they have nothing other than 3 or 4 pistols and 3 mags each on the hips of the officers present. So its not clear to me at all that a police station would be an obvious place where i can just go and get warfighting type weaponry. So if that is part of taiwans plan, then they need to make sure people actually know that they can go to a police station, to not only get a semi or fully automatic rifle, but also at least 5 or more magazines for every rifle and enough ammo to fill them all.

In the past PRC couldn't afford a proper amphibious invasion to the level of the US nor overly-sophisticated air defenses, so the old strategy was that the ROCAF, despite US efforts to neuter them during the Cold War, would immediately mobilize and strike PLA staging areas on Mainland China, ending the war quickly. Of course that's likely not happening now. Thanks, USA. There are also concerns that some of the preppers would instead be interchangeable with rioters in the event of a war. Contrary to mainstream belief outside of Taiwan, a bigger segment of Taiwanese population has anti-ROC sentiment, who consider any war across Taiwan Strait as none of their business despite living on the island, than that with pro-PRC one.

All of which Taiwan lacks. Back in the days of Vietnam, CCP soldiers did not have the combat experience compare to Vietnam's over a decade experience in guerrilla warfare with a much more advanced adversary. Nowadays I'd say Taiwan lacks exactly the things you've said, while CCP has been studying NATO war efforts in the middle east for 2 decades and have grown more and more similar in terms of training. If you take a look at those CCP soldiers, their training and their standards, you realize CCP recruits much more motivated people highly brainwashed) compare to Taiwan when most people don't even wanna go to the military. CCP also studied US military education by providing better training and nutrition standards that fits the need of the battle instead of just teaching tactics. I think if Taiwan actually wanna have a chance, they need a much better budget, much more realistic and reliable program, and a much better recruiting scheme. Most of my Taiwanese civilian friends I've met back in college here in America don't want to serve but had no choice due to the mandatory draft, and with their average physical standards they absolutely are not gonna turn into war machines just by months long boot camp. Even with the most advanced tactics you're not gonna win a war if your men can't even do a 10 mile ruck within standards, in Vietnam they did not had the training program so whoever fit survives, that's basically still a 'selection program'. Taiwan just tells every military aged male to serve while they live in a perfectly developed and civilized society are nowhere near Vietnam's selection brutality. If the war happens tomorrow, unless any NATO country interferes, Taiwan will fall just a matter of days or weeks, simple as that.

@peacenow42 Good point but I want to add that around"95%" of these violent acts only involve those who are involved in shady businesses, ordinary people are not usually harmed and do not live with the worry that at any moment a crazy person will start a shooting. Here are many deaths every day in shootings but they are only people involved in specific issues, whether they are members of organized crime (cartels) or simple criminals, law enforcement or military, it is very rare that the dead do not belong to one of these sides. I am in favor of an armed population but I am also aware that if we had the same freedom to buy and carry weapons as in the USA we would not hesitate even a month after approving this measure that the entire country is going to shit and dozens of civil wars break out against the cartels and among ourselves due to differences of many kinds. If my people kill each other over a soccer game in the middle of the stadium, the truth is I don't even want to imagine the scale of politics, inheritances and land. Airsoft guns are good for practicing tactics (e.g. room clearing, target acquisition, etc.). However, there’s a huge difference between operating an airsoft gun and operating an actual rifle. Just like there’s a huge difference between standing still and shooting a stationary target, as opposed stress shooting on a mobile shooting course (I.e. performing physical exercises, to exhaust one’s cardio, before running through rifle range course). I like to think that the difference between stationary target practice and stress shooting, is similar to the difference between hitting pads and actually sparring. When sparring, your opponent won’t give you time to breathe, nor allow you to brace oneself before each hit.

Many countries permit civilians to own rifles and shotguns in some limited circumstances, but they aggressively police and surveil those people, and they register every household; inevitably when a tyrant or occupier comes, they look at that registry and use it to repress the armed civilians. Private arms should be a) readily available b) NOT REGISTERED, and c) freely transportable for training and other private purposes.

@@microcolonel Why is it that even the US regards cars as dangerous and, to prevent too many accidents from happening, asks people to proof that they are capable of handling one, then asks them to register their cars and insure them, but considers items made for killing humans to be just another kind of consumer goods everyone should own without restrictions? Plus the idea you could fight a tyrannical government with a firearm is childish. If such a government is after you, it can destroy you by seizing your bank account, deleting your social security number, revoking your driver's to erase your entire existence without firing a single shot.

Airsoft is a great tool for training both civilians and military. it doesn't perfectly replicates real shooting from a real firearm but it definitely help a lot more when you got nothing. it also permits you to simulate certain scenarios when you are rehearsing actions on objective. I played and trained with airsoft for 4 years and went on to serve in the Army as both mechanized and Airborne infantryman. Airsoft has definitely contributed to my success. I know many others who came from airsoft community into military with great skills in handling firearms and tactics. one thing you should be aware of when using airsoft is there's a difference between playing airsoft just as sport and doing milsim. both are fun, but you have to realize that airsoft for fun and skills you develope doing that can get you killed in real life. I have found information about volunteers who came into combat in conflict zones with airsoft backround and a lot of them did get killed. since than a lot of airsofterers started to take their hobby more seriously and now many of them are very valued when they come to the units that go into combat. At the end of the day these people are putting in alot of effort in training and that says a lot about them. taking an initiative is what makes a great warrior. I after 7 years in the army, went back to airsoft and played it with great pleasure with and against my old friends. Now I also hunt and shoot long distance when i have time and money. But Airsoft is definitely a great tool. PS Lucas from TRex arms has made a great video proving that airsoft skills translate to real training by taking a guy who never fired a gun but trained with airsoft and how he quickly learned and fired like a pro without ever holding a real firearm in his life.

The idea that (Communist) China has never invaded or fought other countries is simply not true. China invaded Vietnam in 1979. In 1969, Chinese troops were involved in a series of border clashes with Soviet soldiers. Outside observers, including the United States, wondered whether these clashes would escalate into a nuclear confrontation; thankfully, that didn’t happen. In the past few years, Chinese soldiers have been involved in multiple border clashes with soldiers from India. And of course, let’s not forget that large numbers of Chinese “volunteers” fought against South Korean and American soldiers during the Korean War.

The distribution of comments below mostly focuses on firearms handling and ownership. This same problem also manifests in many US prepper online discussions. Guns, other weapons, and direct violent/kinetic action are high profile, glamorous b/c of movies, and relatively familiar to many noncombatants b/c of movies and video games. But as Jo and the army captain spent most of their segments discussing, govt/emergency services and other infrastructure will be overwhelmed in the case of invasion. Any effort that civilians and noncombatants can contribute here will free up the more current and equipped military personnel to do their jobs more freely. Just as any modern military is only constituted of 10% combat soldiers, so too 90% or more of an invasion scenario will involve search and rescue, emergency response, logistics, and other noncombat needs. Just look at any Ukrainian fundraising event -- the quantity of medical supplies (both first aid and more extensive medical/surgical needs), water, fuel, electronics, power generators, vehicles, clothing, etc dwarfs the military component. That's not to say that one replaces the other -- the need for military supplies and hardware is also immense: weapons, uniforms, vests, helmets, night/thermal vision, drones, etc. Through distorted frequency bias, many people get the impression that guns and bullets make up 90% of what's needed, however. In a given year of hypothetical conflict, the 5-30 minutes a prepper might spend actually getting shot at will be the most critical minutes of their life. But then there are also the 360+ days of the year when all the other aspects of survival take precedence. Or to put it in a personal prepper context, at the very least one individual cannot stay on alert and man every watch every day forever. Over any time horizon longer than a few days, teamwork and sharing a distributed set of numerous noncombat skills is essential to survival -- i.e. building a community.

That small portion of time in which combat is necessary is the most important time, without weapons and combat first there’s nothing left. The USA doesn’t have those problems and civilians can easily get the resources/supplies needed if we were attacked

There was an experiment of something similar in America. I can't remember the details exactly, but I think it was on T-Rex Arms channel. A guy trained with airsoft replicas (rifle, pistol) in his country where he could not own firearms. He came over to the States and shot the real weapons and did remarkably well except for some minor issues to work out given the differences in functionality between airsoft and real cycling bolt carrier groups. What Taiwan is doing is valuable and a lot of it will carry over if things get dire. If they do need to pickup real weapons, they'll just need a little bit of training to finish it off which is better than starting from nothing.

Even the most disciplined gunslinging nation of Switzerland had to recall issued ammo from its men because it kept getting used in murders and suicides. There are other ways to fight before finding an armory and after running out of ammo, things like shovels and winches and remote controls that don't immediately raise suspicion but can improvise weapons in the field. Really applies to Taiwan right now and people wonder why the founders wrote this in to the bill of rights. The people really should be able to own arms if they want to.

Taiwan should really rethink their stance on fire arms. All the training with airsoft is useless, if you cant get your hand on a gun during war. They dont have to adopt US gun culture and laws, but public ranges, with access to a variety of weapons for training and more weapons then they think they'll need, in storage distributed across the country, should be a starting point.

No, its bussiness for military. Covilians dont need guns, because civilian gun ownership is threat to all citizens. Also a few war rambos wont change anything. Most Taiwanese want to join communist China.

Village armouries are not even enough, or nessisarily even wise. Having a single target where everyon has their guns makes it a tempting target. A bunch of citizens having a gun means there is no single target. Taiwan should at least be practical and ensure it's law abiding citizens are armed.

This is so exciting to see! The real question to ask the preppers is, "Would you be in favor of allowing civilians to own firearms for civil defense?" I think Taiwan should set up a Swiss-type civil defense culture where every man owns a military rifle and practices regularly with it.

If Taiwanese people are worried about supplies or a blockade they should look into microgreens. There are lots of people running their shelf setups in their basement or an unused room and it can produce so much food that most of these ppl share it with their friends and neighbours and the best thing is it only uses minimal energy for lighting.

Airsoft is definitely a good training tool to understand basic firearm manipulation. I highly recommend it to anyone who's involved in combat arms. I know many airsofters who would wipe the floor against some people I've met in the Navy.

There are far better systems in place than Airsoft guns. Army had a very good system back in the 90's that used lasers. Taught people real quick where to be and where to not be in combat. But when your actually shooting, moving and doing combat tactics nothing can replace using actual bullets. Your Airsoft boys would get their buts handed to them by actual army soldiers and Marines that are seasoned combat veterans. I've seen one guy wipe out a world class airsoft team just by himself. That Airsoft champion team who thought they knew what they were doing. Would have died in less than 3 minutes in a real fight by one seasoned fighter. They thought those airsoft tactics would actually work. They had no clue what they were actually doing. The training and mind set is very different.

People of Taiwan, thank you for being strong and being a beacon of hope for the free world. When part of my country was under a dictatorship the world all were Berliners, now we have to be Hongkongers and support Taiwan and Hong Kong. 香港加油!台湾加油
