Taiwan meanwhile has reacted to the US Presidential candidate Donald Trump's remarks that it should pay the United States for its defense. Now the Island's Premier Cho Jang-Tai has said that Taiwan is in fact committed to strengthening its own defense.

@@月白-u7yIt is not getting free chips that matters. If China secures the technology for their own use, that is significant and could tip the balance of power globally. More important is the US and balance of that world would have very limited production capacity and we could not build chips on the leading edge required for many of our car models today, our networking gear/ internet, our cell phones and internet access, our computers and tablets, our power grid and infrastructure controls, and pretty much everything. It would be a disaster beyond comprehension.

Taiwan does NOT even have a military draft to train people to resist an invasion. They are just demanding the USA pay for the equipment and manpower to do most of the defense. And that country spends so little of their GDP on defense even though they know an invasion is coming. Pretty self-entitled to the USA's money and deficit spending.

The United States imports growth and exports inflation. That's how you've still done well despite decades of deficit spending - GOP and Democrats. It's other countries paying for your ability to throw perfectly good food away while their children make do with less, not the other way around.

Taiwan's own GDP spending for defense is pretty small. They were clearly having the USA spend the taxpayer money to defend Taiwan which does NOT even have a military draft going on to train people to resist an invasion.

That is not how TSMC and FAB business works. Companies like Broadcom, NVidia, Intel place orders on TSMC with the “recipe” and all technical info and tests and details. TSMC schedules the manufacturing timelines ( leading edge is 20 weeks in the FAB). You can view it as similar to United Airline placing orders on Boeing for aircraft. TSMC is a factory that is highly specialized with very high end technical tools and capabilities and they only make chips, like Boeing for a 737 only makes aircraft that’s highly specialized and optimized to build aircraft. Just like with the Boeing 737 Max issues, Southwest has been struggling financially partially due to they can not get aircraft delivered from Boeing. Well if TSMC can not deliver chips to the US and the west, we can not order chips from Boeing or other factories. Intel has FABs and they have been struggling for years and even they order from TSMC. If we don’t have TSMC and Taiwan, say goodbye to your social media, cell phones, TVs, cars, internet etc. Remember all of the shortages from COVID? If we lose Taiwans capabilities, we are so screwed. It would take decades to recover and inflation would be like living in Venezuela, Argentina, the Sudan, Haiti, or Iran as our dollar’s value plummets and markets and banks likely fail.

The intellectual property is still owned by the clients, mostly companies in Silicon Valley What I was saying is that "paying for protection" is also not how inter-military cooperation works. And even if you pay for everything, another country wouldn't really cooperate militarily if it's not in their strategic interest to begin with Your money will mean nothing when they start seeing their children's lives being cut short or irreversibly changed, especially if it's for your needs and not theirs (or more than theirs) I was making a point about reciprocity - that DJT can't just say everyone needs him and he doesn't need anybody The "look what you owe me" negotiating style (if it's even legitimate to call it that) leaves a horrendous taste in the mouth
