Actually what they meant is that, Taiwan is now modelling its National service after Singapore’s, by extending it for a year more. However, the policy is only half-baked. Other segments are not ready to complement such a change. Ie. University years, salaries for male fresh grads, and comprehensiveness of the National service to bring up the proficiency of the soldier despite with the extra time added etc

Taiwan should have focused building up their defense industry a long time ago and deploying their own equipment. Now, they started to build their submarine fleet (maybe smaller and unmanned too), which will take a few more years. With few friends, they should help nearby Pacific countries to build naval and air bases and joint military exercises too and spread their assets overseas, too.

Taiwanese must understand that it will take more than one year to train civilians up to operationally ready soldiers. The 1st 3 months will be preparing one with individual soldiering skills like personal weapon handling (your rifle) and individual fieldcraft (camouflage, field movement, night navigation and hand communications). Then when individual skills are acquired, the soldier has to learn how to work with a few other soldiers in a section of 8 to 10 men. How to move in formation, reaction to enemy fire, etc. They graduate as privates and move on to vocation training like infantrymen, drivers, mechanics, clerks, armour, mechanised infantry, combat engineers, scouts, snipers, naval divers, commandos, etc. This can take 3 to 6 months. Officers go for a 12 months course to get their commission. After this 2nd phase, most will go on to work with bigger formations of platoon, company, battalion, brigade and division sized forces. Advance training is done in progressive sophistication and can take 1 to 2 years. When I did my national service, I did 3 months of basic military training, 5.5 months of basic commando training, 4 months of vocation training, 2.5 months of cross training, 2 months of basic airborne course, 6 months of 1st advance commando training, 6 months of 2nd advance commando training. In between, there was 1 month of annual leave. So it took a total of 2.5 years to be a fully trained and operationally ready commando. I was then released from full-time national service and transferred to an operationally ready battalion to practise our skills for another 7 high key years including 2 Xin Guang exercises (星光部队) in Taiwan. All Singaporeans sincerely appreciate the people of Taiwan for allowing us to train in their country. We do not wish war with any country. But if it has to be, then the cost to the enemy will be heavy. I think Taiwanese should bear this in mind when doing their National Service. But the 1st strategy is not to allow any other country to stir up trouble with the 2 million man PLA. Nobody can win a war with China. Not even the US and NATO put together. So never allow anyone to use Taiwanese soldiers as pawns in a proxy war like what is happening to innocent Ukrainian soldiers now. Many thousands will die needlessly.

Taiwan can gradually increase their compulsory national service to 18 months. Suggest that Taiwan send their new recruits to train with Singapore armed forces. Taiwan can get Israel military trainers to train young Taiwan national service recruits.

You don't just add a few months..and expect a different...The organisation...inflastructure ...takes time..to develop and mature...Taiwan like to compare with Sibgapore....but the gap is wide...Singapore 2 years...is getting them operational ready ..then they goes into ready to mobilise reserve units formation....10 years of reservist training...

@@CrossbredmiMiyang 錯了！台灣不是一個完整國家，原因是台灣國民黨，新黨，統處黨……都是親共政黨。如果這些政黨在新加坡跟李家族唱反調，你說李家族如何處理這些親共黨呢？ 再來美國只為自己利益，臺灣最重要產品就是芯片半導體產業，沒有台灣芯片全世界科技別往前推進了，台灣半導體產業聚落比美國矽谷還要強而已，美國不得跟台灣簽署軍事合作跟訓練台軍濱海作戰戰術，當然自己國家自己救，台灣不能巴望美軍來台救援作戰。所以台軍要延長兵役一年訓練跟美軍實戰經驗，讓解放軍犯台付出慘痛的代價。
